Tallis 2021

Happy belated new year! Have found this monster of a source which may be of some use. Am collecting sources now to work on the reception/legacy section. It seems that Tallis lived an abnormally long life, which comes with its benefits and issues for writing about I suppose. Aza24 (talk) 05:13, 10 January 2021 (UTC)

Hello! Have I gone bonkers here? Do shout at me if yes. Thanks for all your hard work on TT. Cheers DBaK (talk) 18:03, 20 January 2021 (UTC)

@DisillusionedBitterAndKnackered: No, BonkersDisillusionedBitterAndKnackered doesn't sound right to me... However I remove all duplicated links and the current version of the article now has four, including Dover Priory and Benedictine—if you don't mind I'll remove them all. Amitchell125 (talk) 18:28, 20 January 2021 (UTC)
Good grief. Sorry. I would have sworn that I was avoiding dupes. Sorry. It's a User Incompetence Issue. Sheesh. Sorry again. Best wishes (and sorry) DBaK (talk) 18:31, 20 January 2021 (UTC)
Follow-up - I have made a further minor edit to mention Dover earlier, and to take out a bad "the". I hope that's OK. Cheers DBaK (talk) 18:37, 20 January 2021 (UTC)
@DisillusionedBitterAndKnackered: No worries, I'm rewriting some of the article at present, any help is much appreciated. Amitchell125 (talk) 18:43, 20 January 2021 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Emily Stannard

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Emily Stannard you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Ealdgyth -- Ealdgyth (talk) 18:21, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

Hi there Amitchell125, hope you're doing well—and hopefully enjoying (or at least weathering) the uptick in interest in the Sutton Hoo-related articles, now that The Dig is out there. I actually thought of you because of your work in this space, and wondered if you might be interested in taking a brief look at the article about the archaeologist Martin Rundkvist (currently at User:Usernameunique/Martin Rundkvist)? Chiswick Chap and I have been building it out, and plan to bring it to mainspace (with a concurrent good-article nomination) shortly. The article's lost at AfD twice already, so having your added review would help place it in the best possible shape this time around. Thanks, --Usernameunique (talk) 02:46, 1 February 2021 (UTC)

@Usernameunique: Hi, I've read the text through and the prose is written to a high standard, and made for an interesting read.
A concern I have would be about some of the trivial information included (a few examples: "primarily in the suburbs Fisksätra and Saltsjöbaden"; "In 2001, Rundkvist won several games on the Swedish version of the television show Jeopardy!."; "Rundkvist is a member of the Internationales Sachsensymposion."). Another concern would be that the contents of his published books are discussed, and the opinions of various reviewers of his books are included.
The lead section falls short of convincing me of his notability ("Rundkvist has studied and excavated various sites in Sweden, particularly in the country's South."; "which the James Randi Educational Foundation terms "the most-read archaeology blog on the Internet""). Is he an authority on an aspect of his subject? What is his best known work? Can the 'Awards and distinctions' section be expanded at all? Hope this helps. Regards, Amitchell125 (talk) 21:48, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
Thanks very much for those comments! We've taken a crack at them—principally by revising the lead to try to make the notability more clear in the lead, and by deleting some of the extraneous facts. What is your concern about discussing the contents and reviews of his books? Given that he's (among other things) an author, I would think that would be par for the course. --Usernameunique (talk) 05:24, 7 February 2021 (UTC)

Referencing

Hello, Amitchell! I notice you have added a new parameter, if that's the right word, to all the source citations chez Arthur Sullivan. I wonder if you would explain to me what they are for and if I should be adding the same things to the many lists of sources I have added to WP over the years? Greatly obliged if you will enlighten me: I am, I think, better at content than at WP formatting. I'll watch this page for any thoughts you may have. Best wishes, Tim riley talk 19:53, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

Hi @Tim riley:, the '|ref=none' I added to all the sources this evening (whilst listening to Patience Act I to help relieve the monotony) stops error messages appearing. Using the H.M.S. Pinafore article as an example, the following text appears at the top of the Sources section: Ainger, Michael (2002). Gilbert and Sullivan – A Dual Biography. Oxford University Press. ISBN 0-19-514769-3. Harv warning: There is no link pointing to this citation. The anchor is named CITEREFAinger2002. This happens if an article doesn't use the Harvard citation style, which I use, but many other editors don't. The '|ref=none' bit magically removes the error message, without changing the article in any other way. Hope this helps. Amitchell125 (talk) 20:45, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
Thank you for that. I shall ponder. The Harvard style is too hard for me, and I stick to my early Bronze Age manual formatting. Which recording of Patience? Tim riley talk 20:49, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
I was bullied into using Harvard many years ago by an editor reviewing one of my articles, and now it's hard to use other styles. The D'Oyly Carte recording on YouTube is the one I was listening to. Amitchell125 (talk) 20:55, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
Excellent! I saw that production in the 1960s when I was a youth. Anyone who likes it may count himself my friend, whatever he thinks of my abilities at citation. Tim riley talk 21:36, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

I have just seen that you have someone up for FAC with connexions to Gunton. As one of my oldest friends lives at Gunton Hall I shall feel obliged to look in at the FAC page, though in general I steer well clear of it these days. See you there over the next day or so. Hi,

I'd just like to let you know that I saw your /information subpage because it was accidentally categorised in Category:Cleanup templates. I've fixed that, but I noticed in the history that someone removed information from the list of articles you've worked on (Diff). Just wanted to let you know of this in case it was vandalism. Duplicate links

Dear Amitchell125,

I'm writing to you because I am concerned about your recent edits at History of science. You have removed a lot of duplicate links, which is of course in line with the mos:duplink policy, but you appear to have been doing this in such a systematic and non-discriminating way, that I fear you may have left the article less helpful for it. For example, while it is very helpful to remove a duplicate link to Sanskrit in the very next sentence after which it first occurred (as you did here), removing it when it reoccurs fifteen (!) sections further (as you did here) is potentially a lot less helpful.

Remember that the rationale for keeping the "only once in an article" clause in the guideline is to structurally combat overlinking (see, e.g., the Rfc here). But if helpful, links may of course be repeated (especially when far apart, see again the Rfc), and I just wonder whether you are taking this into consideration every time you remove a duplicate link?

Sincerely, Apaugasma (talk|contribs) 21:55, 9 February 2021 (UTC)

Hi Apaugasma, the article seems to be in bad shape generally, and the excessive overlinking is just one aspect that needs attention. Whilst I fully understand your point, I would refer you to Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Linking, which is clear about the use of links, whether the number of sections an article has is large or not.. Regards, Amitchell125 (talk) 22:07, 9 February 2021 (UTC)
I agree that this particular article is in bad shape, and that reducing overlinking is one of the ways to improve things a bit, but my concern is rather for the general effect of systematically removing all duplicate links, in all articles. If you ever have some spare time, it would be great if you could take a look at the RfC I linked above. Many thanks, Apaugasma (talk|contribs) 22:39, 9 February 2021 (UTC)
Hi Apaugasma, One way of dealing with saturated overlinking is to remove all the duplications (which are often put in by someone whose knowledge of the WP:MOS is slight) and then replace those that are particularly helpful to the reader. The discussion you referred me to might not be read by a GAN reviewer, even an experienced one like me, but I agree that reviewers are sympathetic to the use of a few carefully chosen duplicate links. There's little of that kind of sympathy at FAC level, I fear :) Regards, Amitchell125 (talk) 22:55, 9 February 2021 (UTC)

Hi, I just wanted to thank you again for the review at Skathi (moon). I overhauled that particular page because it was a stub that was getting (literally) unbelievable pageviews, and it was really satisfying to have it move through the process so quickly after nomination. I've also never done a GA review before because first I wanted to be on the receiving end of a few reviews before I gave one out, and now I feel like your process gave me a much clearer sense of what's involved, so I think I'll go review some pages! ISBNs

Please be careful about converting ISBN-10 numbers to ISBN 13 numbers - we should add the ISBN number if it is actually given by the book - see Wikipedia:ISBN#Types - "However, if an older work only lists an ISBN-10, use that in citations instead of calculating an ISBN-13 for it. This is because ISBNs are often used as search strings and checksum differences between the two forms make it difficult to find items listed only under the other type." - in particular, someone checking the references cannot easily tell whether they are consulting the same edition as that cited if the ISBN number isn't the one listed in the book.Nigel Ish (talk) 21:03, 25 April 2021 (UTC)

A long time ago, non sequitur

A long time ago, 7 November 2010, you expanded the article Æthelberht II of East Anglia, to include the sentence:

In 793 the vulnerability of the English east coast was exposed when the monastery at Lindisfarne was looted by Vikings, and a year later Jarrow was also attacked, which the historian Steven Plunkett reasons would ensure that East Anglia was governed firmly.

I'm afraid I have no idea what that sentence intends. Any idea from memory? Shenme (talk) 01:26, 20 May 2021 (UTC)

Finland added. Amitchell125 (talk) 13:08, 27 May 2021 (UTC)

Hello, Amitchell25.

I appreciate your willingness to take on Mariner 1 and the edits you made. Unfortunately, by failing the GA, you precluded my ability to respond. Many of your edits were well-founded. Some I dispute.

With regard to the citations you suggested be replaced, please note that both the Treasury and Aviation Week are copyrighted publications. I like Archive.org, I've given them a lot of money, but I sometimes find their definition of Fair Use overly liberal. I will not be linking to them where sources be in copyright (though their current availability does make it easier for reviewers to check my work, of course). Please note that I have three FAs and several GAs that reference AvWeekly as I have done it on Mariner 1, and none suggested I do otherwise.

Again, I am grateful for the time you spent on Mariner 1, and I shall implement many of the changes while also reviewing the latter portions with your suggestions in mind. --Neopeius (talk) 23:52, 1 July 2021 (UTC)

Hello Amitchell125:

The goal of this drive is to eliminate the backlog of unreviewed articles. The drive is running until 31 July 2021.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.
There is currently a backlog of over 2700 articles, so start reviewing articles. We're looking forward to your help!

Sent by MediaWiki message delivery (talk) on behalf of Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for Creation at 21:53, 7 July 2021 (UTC). If you do not wish to recieve future notification, please remove your name from the mailing list.

Wow. That's a doozy.

Both to go through and to make I'm sure. Thanks for the work you put in. I'm currently editing a Youtube video so I won't be able to take this on until 18th of July at the earliest, most likely the 19th. For clarification, what do you mean by quotes needing "direct citation"? Also, and I know I've lost this battle but can you please explain to me Wikipedia's hatred of the word "however"? All removing it does is create run-on sentences that make the narrator seem lobotomised. Serendipodous 17:31, 13 July 2021 (UTC)

Hi Serendipodous: (lifted from the GA review cheatsheet produced by a respected editor)
  1. "Annoying as it is, all quotations must be directly cited, like "quotation"<footnote> if they are in the middle of a sentence, even if the sentence has a citation at the end of the sentence. WP:CITE#Additional annotation. I'll note any occurrences below as "quotation needs direct citation".
  2. "Watch qualifiers at the start of sentences. However, In regards to." (see also MOS:EDITORIAL).
I hope this helps. I've extended the review time for a week after 18 July, let me know if it's too early. Regards, Amitchell125 (talk) 17:39, 13 July 2021 (UTC)

I'm afraid I'm going to need a second run through of the citations; I've removed and replaced so many that the numbers don't match up. Sorry. Serendipodous 19:06, 21 July 2021 (UTC)

Well, glad we both got through that. Can't say I enjoyed the experience but you did beat the article into shape. Thanks for putting in the effort. God knows it was a lot. I was wondering, do you think it could go to FAC or should it get another peer review first? Thanks :) Serendipodous 20:09, 28 July 2021 (UTC)

Hi, glad to have been able to help you, I think a peer review is next, after having first looked at the glut of astronomy FAs out there, to see what could be done. AM Amitchell125 (talk) 21:17, 28 July 2021 (UTC)

I hate to drag you back in, but if you've been following what's been going on at Ceres, I will need a third party intervention before this becomes an all-out edit war. Serendipodous 21:11, 29 July 2021 (UTC)

July corner

On DYK today, two songs, a morning song that a cousin gave to me, about the many meanings of rising - and thanks for the GA review! - and the other praying for the courage to take the necessary steps. I should write more GAs given my initials, but I also want to care for articles of those who recently died (now Esther Béjarano), and of psalms in memory of Yoninah, - more missing than there. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:44, 16 July 2021 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Andrew Sesinyi.png

Thanks for uploading File:Andrew Sesinyi.png. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:09, 19 July 2021 (UTC)

GA

Hello Amitchell125,

I hope you're well. I've seen you're participating in the GA backlog drive (I've been meaning to participate but got caught up in the AfC drive instead). I was wondering whether you'd like to review a new article I wrote (L. D. Reynolds). It's very much in the mould of the Mynors article and I think it's in decent shape. Anyway, let me know what you think and whether there's anything I can review for you. Best, Modussiccandi (talk) 07:48, 25 July 2021 (UTC)

Done, happy to oblige. Stanisław Egbert Koźmian is my latest GAN, an interesting chap that I researched for a relative of his in the UK. John Thirtle is resting quietly at FAC. Regards, Amitchell125 (talk) 08:23, 25 July 2021 (UTC)
Thanks a lot. I'll be writing a review for John Thirtle at FAC later tonight or tomorrow. Best, Modussiccandi (talk) 08:39, 25 July 2021 (UTC)

I've dealt with the citation issues

Phil Plait is a respected scientist and science communicator, so I've left his link. Other than that, dealt with. BTW, and I am genuinely curious: do you know what the inner solar system is? Because it has a very specific meaning, and if that meaning is commonly known I am very surprised to hear it. Serendipodous 12:01, 25 July 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for doing that, as a physics teacher I'm quite familiar with the Solar System, both the inner and outer parts, but I acknowledge others may not be. Amitchell125 (talk) 12:57, 25 July 2021 (UTC)

If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. DYK for Norwich Cathedral astronomical clock

On 10 August 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Norwich Cathedral astronomical clock, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the costs of the great astronomical clock at Norwich Cathedral that were recorded in its Sacrist's Rolls from 1322 to 1325 provide the earliest known detailed account of clockmaking in England? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Norwich Cathedral astronomical clock. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Norwich Cathedral astronomical clock), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Commons link placement

Hi, could you link the section in the MOS that says the Commons template should be in the Specification sections of aircraft articles please? This is the wording from Template:Commons category: In articles, this template should be placed at the top of the last section on the page. Many thanks. Nimbus (Cumulus nimbus floats by) 17:39, 13 August 2021 (UTC)

Hi Nimbus227, the link is here. Regards, Amitchell125 (talk) 17:56, 13 August 2021 (UTC)
Which does not conflict with the template directions? ...have to be put at the beginning of the last section of the article (which is not necessarily the "External links" section) so that boxes will appear next to, rather than below, the list items. Nimbus (Cumulus nimbus floats by) 18:25, 13 August 2021 (UTC)
Hi Nimbus227, my bad, I misread "last section to mean 'last paragraph of text'. Amitchell125 (talk) 18:28, 13 August 2021 (UTC)
I see that you have moved the link in other articles. If in doubt about layout you could have a look at any Featured Article, they are not all perfect but are generally correct as they have been reviewed by experienced editors.Nimbus (Cumulus nimbus floats by) 18:33, 13 August 2021 (UTC)

john thirtle

hello, Amitchell125! I had a few questions regarding this article and the associated blurb.

  • is it known for certain that thirtle was born in 1777? the article only appears to state that he was baptized in 1777. i could not find a source that definitively stated thirtle's year of birth, so had been thinking about adding "bapt." before "1777" in the blurb, to conform with the article lead. (by the way, i believe "baptised" may be the preferred british english spelling, but i am not positive about that.)
The sources all state Thirtle's dates as being 1777–1839 (e.g. Allthorpe-Guyton (1977)), so I don't think we need be concerned that he was born in a different year from the the year he was baptised. The article now uses the British spelling consistently, thanks for spotting that. Amitchell125 (talk) 12:26, 2 November 2021 (UTC)
  • what exactly does the allthorpe-guyton source say about thirtle's siblings? google books only gives me short excerpts when i tried to search for his brother james in the source. however, the excerpts appear to say that james was the second son of his father john, and that john appears to have had no other sons. this appears to suggest that john (junior) was the elder son, unless other sons were mentioned in the text that were not covered in the excerpts i was able to read.
I think you may have a point here. A-G p11 describes Thirtle's father John as follows: John Thirtle (sen.) was a shoemaker and poss. brother of Thomas, 4 sisters, and James. Then, "John Thirtle senior may have named his second son James, after his brother. He seems to have had no other sons...". Thanks for spotting the error, now corrected. Amitchell125 (talk) 13:02, 2 November 2021 (UTC)
  • what is the generally accepted title of thirtle's treatise? the article appears to refer to it as "Treatise on Watercolour", "Manuscript Treatise on Watercolour", and "Hints on Water-colour Painting". i am not sure if they are pretty much all interchangeable, though the blurb is currently using the first of the three.
Allthorpe-Guyton (1977), where the treatise is published in full, gives the manuscript title as Hints on Water-colour Painting by John Thirtle Artist. She also gives the treatise her own title Manuscript Treatise on Watercolour. I'll clarify this in a note, and use A-G's version consistently in the article. Amitchell125 (talk) 12:36, 2 November 2021 (UTC)
  • lastly, do reliable sources generally still refer to the treatise as "unpublished"? as the treatise appears to have been published in 1977, my assumption was that the treatise would be more accurately described as "previously unpublished" or something similar, but it is currently described as "unpublished" in both the article lead and the blurb.
Sorted according to your comment. Amitchell125 (talk) 12:54, 2 November 2021 (UTC)
