Request for Thoughts of Yunshui on the role of Civility and the use of WP:UNDUE

I am responding to a comment which you made on Borderlands1920 (talk) 15:22, 14 February 2014 (UTC) regarding CIVILITY. There I posed some questions for you as to the relationship of CIVILITY to the proper use of UNDUE. Your thoughts on this issue would be very helpful. My apologies for incorrectly spelling your name in that post.

In general does the use of UNDUE without a more detailed explanation and openness to discussion by the user of UNDUE constitute acceptable CIVILITY within Wikipedia. For the definition of CIVILITY I would like to suggest the following as "formal politeness and courtesy in behavior and speech". The point I am raising is whether-from your perspective-- the "behavior" of "failure to provide a more detailed explanation for the use of the UNDUE and willingness to engage in discussion when requested" constitutes a breach of Civility within the context of Wikipedia ?

I notice that you place a premium on CIVILITY and I would hope that you might have thought about the interactions of CIVILITY and the allowed use of WP:UNDUE

With all due respect your comment on my talk page does not address the specifics of Civility as it relates to use of WP:Undue. The question here specifically relates to the responsibility of the user of UNDUE to engage in proper dialogue when requested. As was pointed out by Mz7(talk) the proper Wikipedia cycle is edit, undo, discuss. (talk page stalker) Er, there is no particular relationship between civility and undue weight, other than that they are both part of Wikipedia policy. The former is a policy that governs user conduct, and the latter is a policy that governs the content of articles; they're not any more related than any other two Wikipedia policies. (talk page stalker) I would say that when making an edit based on WP:UNDUE or another content policy such as WP:NPOV or WP:PEACOCK it can be helpful to explain how the policy applies in the particular situation at hand, and if the edit is challenged or questions, this is usually helpful. But that isn't really a matter of the relation between WP:UNDUE and WP:CIVIL, it is a simply that all edits should be made clear, ideally when made, or else when questioned. When a link is provided as part of an edit summary or on a talk page discussing the edit, others are expected to follow the link and understand the policy, guideline, procedure, or essay being referenced. Hi Tennisgrl19. It's worth noting that advertising wasn't the issue with that particular deletion - the deleted article consisted of a single sentence which barely allowed the reader to understand what CCC was, let alone why it was notable enough to be in an encyclopedia. I've no problem with you and your group recreating the page (indeed, I'll help you out if I can), but you'll need to make sure that the new version contains sufficient reliable sources to warrant inclusion. Your edit experience

Hi Yunshui: Previously I noticed your interest in neurobiology and new editors. One of my own interests is in neurobiology and artificial intelligence. Recently, I tried to place a new edit on Prometheus (film) which deals with this subject, and which was questioned. Could you glance at this to see if this is a position-of-edit issue on that Page, or if the issue is taking exception to the otherwise un-cited authors of a recently published book about artificial intelligence in Prometheus (film). Any advise or recommendation for an improved location for the new edit there would be appreciated. LawrencePrincipe (talk) 02:33, 19 February 2014 (UTC)

I don't think it's an issue with the source, which looks perfectly acceptable to me - the problem is that the passage you added really doesn't add to a reader's knowledge of the film. A better place for such an addition would be on the Ridley Scott article, but you'd need to rephrase it to be about the subject of the article, not the book, for example:

[[Artificial intelligence]] is a unifying theme throughout Ridley Scott's career as a director, particularly in [[Blade Runner]], [[Alien]], and ''Prometheus''.<ref>''The Culture and Philosophy of Ridley Scott'', p. 140-142, Lexington Books, 2013.</ref>

You could probably expand this, but remember that you're writing about the subject of the article, not the source or its content. Alternatively, if you can locate a few good-quality reviews of the book, you could look at creating an article about the book itself. Yunshui 雲‍水 08:49, 19 February 2014 (UTC)
Your suggestion looked very good and I think your version of the first sentence about Artificial Intelligence is better than mine. I then included the edit in an already existing enumerated list of the Director's main traits listed on the page for Ridley Scott. After this, I then returned to the original Page to read further on in the original Prometheus (film) page and noticed that there was a previously started Android paragraph in the same subsection. My thought was to shorten my edit further, down to 2 sentences, and add the new reference about Artificial Intelligence in Prometheus (film) to the Android paragraph (which does not mention Artificial Intelligence). User:Bend seemed to also like it there and did a further edit. Then, the other editor who reverted it yesterday came back and seemed to label it as semi-literate, and deleted it once more. I am fairly sure the New York publisher of this new book about Ridley Scott and Prometheus is reputable, and that the authors of it are substantial. Am I missing something self-evident, or should me and User:Bend just accept the exclusion of this new book about Ridley Scott and his film Prometheus from the wikipage for Prometheus (film). Well again, you've written about the book, not about the film/director. Generally speaking, if you're mentioning the content of the source directly then you're writing about the wrong thing. My suggestion above wasn't a rewrite of the first sentence of your proposed edit - it was a complete replacement. A reader who want to know about themes in Ridley Scott's work doesn't need to know that a source makes use of JS Mill in its analysis, or that it makes a connection between Turing and Searle's work, unless there's something resulting from that which directly relates to Scott. There's nothing wrong with saying, "Scott's work uses artificial intelligence as a theme" and citing "Culture and Philosophy..." as the source, but you don't need to elaborate on the finer points of the book's analysis. RE: Foul-mouthed IP

I did see your note at AIV, but I usually like to leave the talkpage unblocked initially just to give them a fair chance at requesting an unblock. When it becomes apparent that isn't going to happen - as in this case - talkpage revocation is only a mouse-click away. Incidentally, RPP would be a pretty slow way to get the talkpage access removed - your best bet would be AIV again (or you could just ask me!). Thanks for keeping a watchful eye out. Thanks for letting me know that you saw my note on AIV. Some users' blocking admins have actually blocked the users without looking at AIV (likely by observing the vandalism themselves), even if the AIV report was filed by another user or a bot. Cesare Attolini Page

It would appear that a brand page I had been using for research has been deleted, namely that of Cesare Attolini. I did not create the page myself but did check the log as to why it had been deleted. At the time of reading it certainly didn't seem like a blatant attempt to promote the brand but instead a valuable resource for someone like myself and now I am having to resort to pulling info from the brand's website, which is certainly publicity driven and devoid of many of the more impartial details I had been looking for. You'll find a lot more information on the website than you would have done in the article, especially since the article was no more than a cobbled-together collection of various snippets copied from the company's webpage. At the time of deletion, there was not a single sentence in the entire article that could be considered impartial (again, this is hardly surprising since it was all taken from the company's own website). Hi, Yunshui. Do you remember H. V. Kumar? You have had dealings with the article about him at various times since October 2012, the latest being yesterday, when you deleted the article. The author of the article is under the mistaken impression that I deleted it, and has posted to my talk page asking me to restore it. I have posted a long answer, amongst other things pointing out that I didn't delete it. It is possible that he will now come to you to ask for restoration. If so, you may possibly like to see what I have written about it, which you can see here, in the section "Deleted HVK's article". Thanks for the advance warning. I concur with your analysis - namely, that after deletion at AFD and subsequent userfication, the article was reposted with no meaningful improvements. Take a closer look at your false poses

Re this: You correctly observed that NaplesBotanical (talk · contribs) was a false pos for the reported issue ("lesbo"). However the account's edits had solely been to Naples Botanical Garden, so I blocked the account for a username violation on those grounds.

Remember, just because the bot got it wrong on the reported issue doesn't mean there aren't any issues. I always check the contribs and deleted contribs before marking a bot report as a false pos. Daniel Case (talk) 17:08, 27 February 2014 (UTC)

I'm only getting seven reasons instead of a window and a half (which finished up with the specialised checkuserblock below the spamublock I use so often - I nearly blocked someone checkuser when that first appeared as I just went for the bottom reason as usual...). I've tried looking at it several times now, on various users (including you, as it happens...) - no change, so I'm guessing it's something specific to your settings. I did rather expect that (the Edit... page is Mediawiki, so if one person can see it in full, everyone else should be able to as well). Okay, the problem's definitely with your drop down menu and how it's picking up the data from that page. Changed any settings lately? One thing you could try is purging your cache, or closing and reopening your browser (you know, all the usual stuff IT helpdesks ask you to do...). Structure and content seems pretty good, but there's a few places where a good copyedit would do wonders for it (e.g. missing capital in 3rd sentence of lead; lines like, "It is also known as the Prime minister Capital of the India, the importance of the government to the city has led seven out of fourteen Prime Ministers of India"; inconsistent terminology (ANN or AMC?); incomplete HTML in the Culture section; the tourism section is pretty unintelligible etc.). I'd suggest putting it in front of the Guild of copyeditors for a once-over. Sources look generally okay, but the formatting should be the same for all of them, and I'd give the External links section a bit of a prune. The Logitech article cites a number of independent sources which attest to the fact that Logitech meets Wikipedia's basic inclusion requirements for notability. Your submitted article did not, nor did it suggest that LetsHelp is in any way important or significant enough to be included in an encyclopedia. The article was virtually unintelligible, dreadfully formatted, promotional in tone and loaded with probable copyright violations - however I actually deleted it because it made no claim of importance and contained no independent sources attesting to its notability. Bio 345 Wiki Page: YVR SUSTAINABILITY

I am currently starting a subsection on YVR about Sustainability with my partner Kaylerz. I understand that the POV has to be neutral, however it it proving hard to find anything on YVR sustainability not written by YVR. I will keep looking, however, I am allowed to use some information by YVR right?

Hi Karolina7. Some information can be sourced to the subject of an article, yes - but there are restrictions. The guidelines restrict you to neutral and uncontroversial statements (so you can't, for example, repeat a company's claim that they are the "only company in the Western hemisphere to use this technology"). In addition, the article must still be based primarily on secondary or tertiary sources - you can't get away from the fact that you need independent sources for an article to stand up, although if you're expanding the existing YVR article, there are already a substantial collection of such sources in place. Generally speaking, though, if the only source of a piece of information is the subject of the article, one should be very wary of including that information in Wikipedia - just one secondary source like a magazine article or academic paper is preferable to thirty pages from the company's website or press office. Hi Abhic93. There are several things I need to cover here. First and foremost, you absolutely cannot copy the text of the Lynn Valley Centre website into Wikipedia. I've deleted the sections that were copied directly, but you also need to rewrite what's left quite extensively, as it is currently a close paraphrase of the Centre's website. Placing non-free text into Wikipedia like this is not only against Wikipedia's policies, it is also technically illegal - you are re-releasing someone else's work as your own and under a new licence, in direct violation of their copyright. Sorry to be stern, but that really is an absolute no-no here. I appreciate that you probably intended to change the text as you worked on the article, but I'm afraid that Wikipedia cannot host non-free material from other sources, even in a sandbox, even for a short time.
Serious stuff out of the way, let's get to the less pressing issues. Another reason that Wikipedia doesn't use text from else is that it doesn't usually meet the requirements for a neutral tone of voice - unsurprisingly, text from a company's website tends to be fairly favourable to the company. When you're writing, remember that you're not trying to advertise the Centre or its programs - you're providing encyclopedic information for someone who has never been there and in all likelihood, never will. In a thirty years time, will it be useful for a reader in, say, Nepal to know that the Centre offered birthday parties for children under 10, and that these were scheduled between 1 and 3.15 pm at weekends (except for occasional Fridays by prior arrangement)?
By the same token, we also don't accept articles that are sourced only to the subject of the article. Nothing is stopping me from creating a website about myself claiming all sorts of fantastic things about my amazing skills, but Wikipedia wouldn't accept that website as a source for an article about me. The key criterion with Wikipedia is that someone else must have written about it first. You therefore need sources which are about the Centre, not by the Centre; without such sources, I'm afraid the article won't stand a chance.
Finally, to address the question you actually asked: You need to add inline citations for any information that is likely to be challenged. In practice, that means that you should generally have a citation at the end of each paragraph, and additional citations at the end of sentences which contain potentially controversial information (like, for example, facts and figures). Adding citations looks pretty complicated but is actually very easy once you get the hang of it; I've put together a very short essay which will give you all the basic info that you need. It appears the new article for Povodog may be a copy paste of the sources - for instance this one and from this as well. As official representatives of the Povodog shelter you should not be editing an article about your organisation. The article will not be restored, as it violated that copyright of a number of different sources. You absolutely may not add copy-pasted content from any non-free source to Wikipedia. NEW POWERFUL DAMA

Dear Yunshi, You delete the New Powerful Dama, because according to you there is already a side for that with Queen Chess. This is not correct, because the New Powerful Dama has two meanings. It was used as a New Chess Queen in 1475 instead of the old arabic piece in Spain with a complete new movement. Apart from that the New Powerful Dama was also used in a new game, namely the draughts game or checkers game as it is called in the USA. If we use only Queen Chess than there is not any relationship with the New Powerful Dama to the draughts (checkers) game. So I request for an apart article for the New Powerful Dama and ofcourse I am willing to put the article at first in the sandbox for ameliorating texts together. As far as I can tell from the literature, Govert Westerveld is the only person in the chess community using this terminology in an attempt to establish a Valencian origin for the chess queen. I've no objection to this being included in the article on the chess queen (assuming some sources canbe found to support it), but no-one except Westerveld seems to use this term or make any connection to the game of draughts. Hi Yunshui - Biol 345 question

Hi Yunshui, hope all is well with you. My partner and I found that there were two wiki pages that relate to the Mount Seymour Park in Vancouver, Canada. We plan to integrate the information together into one page so its much easier for the viewer. We plan to take the information from the Mount Seymour and add it to the Mount Seymour Provincial Park page (which we are currently editing and adding our own information in our sandbox: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Thelukkolukko/sandbox).

What is the proper plan of action that should we do? So far, we copied and pasted the information from Mount Seymour into our sandbox editing page. Is this allowed? What you suggest? We also noticed that once we amalgamate the pages together and transfer the info from Mount Seymour to our sandbox ( which will eventually be the edited Mount Seymour Provincial Park page), the Mount Seymour page does not necessarily need to exist.

Should we just edit the Mount Seymour page and delete all the information or is there a proper way of doing this. We ultimately want our edited version of the Mount Seymour Provincial Park to be the major source of info, so is there a way to make the Mount Seymour Page forward to ours?

Hi Aabundo. It sounds as though what you're proposing is what we refer to as a page merge (removing one page and incorporating its content into another). I'd be wary of doing this with two such established articles - most merges tend to require a discussion and an establishment of consensus on the article's talkpage. If you do combine the two pages into one, your work will probably be reverted and you'll be told to discuss it first.
That's not to say it isn't a good idea to combine the pages, but if you want to go down that route you'll need to log a merge proposal (see the link in my first sentence for details), and you'd probably have a wait of several weeks before a consensus is established and the discussion is closed. Even then, there's no guarantee that the consensus will approve your proposal (on past experience, I'd say it probably wouldn't). Given that you guys (unlike most Wikipedia editors) are working to a timeframe, that's probably not the most sensible process to get involved with.
If you decide to go ahead without holding a discussion, the correct process is to incorporate all of the information into the new page first, then replace the content of the Mount Seymour article with the code #REDIRECT [[Mount Seymour Provincial Park]]. As I said, though, if you do this you will probably find that it gets reverted almost immediately.
I would suggest, instead, that you incorporate a small amount of information from the Mount Seymour page into your draft, condensing the content of that article into one or two paragraphs and adding it as a section within your revised version of the Mount Seymour Provincial Park page. You can also use the {{main}} template to link readers to the full version of the Mount Seymour article.
One thing that you do need to be careful with is copying and pasting within Wikipedia. No-one's going to be too fussed if you take a copy of a page into a sandbox for editing (although technically speaking you shouldn't), but you'll need to be careful in moving the content back to the "live" page, especially if it ends up incorporating text from the Mount Seymour article. We also created a discussion just to see if it would work- although we are doubtful. We are wondering what would be the way to apply our draft into the actual page - do we just copy and paste our draft script?
