Canadian politicians[edit]

Please note that Canadian politicians are subcategorized by province or territory and role, and are not thrown directly into Category:Canadian politicians at all. There have been literally tens of thousands of Canadian politicians throughout history, so throwing all of them directly into one "catch-all" category would make it an unbrowsably massive megacategory that would not actually be useful to a reader at all — so they aren't all thrown into the parent category, and instead are subcategorized for the province they served, the roles they held, and on and so forth. So please don't add Category:Canadian politicians to articles that are already in something like Category:Conservative Party of Canada (1867–1942) senators or Category:Mayors of London, Ontario, because those are already subcategories of the base politicians category. Thank you for clarifying! This is very helpful and I'll keep it in mind going forward. CaptivatingtheKing (talk) 18:47, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

March 2024[edit]

Information icon Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, articles should not be moved without good reason. They should have a name that is both accurate and intuitive. Wikipedia has some guidelines in place to help with this. Generally, a page should only be moved to a new title if the current name doesn't follow these guidelines. Also, if a page move is being discussed, consensus needs to be reached before anybody moves the page. If you would like to experiment with page titles and moving, please use the test Wikipedia. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 04:39, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the message. May I ask what page I moved erroneously? I renamed a new page I had created with a disambiguated title and I accidentally made a page which I then had to move to drafts. I don't want to unknowingly repeat any mistakes so please let me know. I appreciate the help! CaptivatingtheKing (talk) 02:44, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I just checked my notifications and believe the issue you're referring to is H. & J. Ryan, which I moved to H. & J. Ryan (railway company) and has been renamed back to H. & J. Ryan. I thought the brackets could help searchers since the company is no longer in operations and is closely tied to the history of the Canadian Pacific Railway; for which is was a major development firm. If that has been decided to be an unnecessary detail for inclusion then I will defer to your judgement! CaptivatingtheKing (talk) 02:49, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation link notification for March 16[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Xanthe Ryder, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page British. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Close paraphrasing on Hugh Ryan (railway magnate)[edit]

Hi CaptivatingtheKing. Thank you for writing the article on Hugh Ryan. I've reviewed it as part of the new pages review process here, and it seems like an interesting addition to Wikipedia — it's always nice to have better coverage of historical figures. One thing I noticed, though, was that a couple of the sentences in the article were quite close to one of the Dictionary of Canadian Biography articles used as a source [1]. While I don't believe it is anywhere near extensive enough to be considered an issue under our copyright policy, so it's not as much of a big deal, I am supposed to leave a heads up and a pointer to our guide on Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing.

For an example of close paraphrasing, consider the following sentence: The source says:

A well-read man, Ryan was particularly interested in events in his native Ireland. He gave generously to help the Irish representatives in the British parliament

The article says:

A well read man, Ryan was particularly interested in the political happenings in his native Ireland—often giving generously to the Irish Parliamentary Party [...]

There are one or two other examples that I could see. As I mentioned, this is a very limited issue, and I found your article quite good overall, but in the future, it can be worth keeping a closer eye on these things and paraphrase these sentences a bit less closely. Less closely adhering to the word choice used in the source may also allow adjusting the tone, for example by omitting phrases that appear to be more a matter of opinion.

Again, thank you for your work on this article, and let me know if you have any questions! Alpha3031 (tc) 06:56, 18 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
