Expansion[edit]
Lane is a particularly good source to use to expand upon the problems that Victorian mores, and John Ruskin in particular, had with pictures of animals being tortured and this painting specifically — something that the article doesn't yet touch upon. Lane also has material on the goat's expression, and the contrast between this painting and the work of Landseer, the red fillet on the goat's horns, the symbolism of the skull and the decorations on the picture frame, the differences between the two versions of the painting, and more.
