LoL Esports Manager[edit]

It appears there hasn't been any update on this since the initial announcement through the LPL in 2020. I've moved it to the TBA release date column. It does appear to be a game developed in house by Riot Games though. Should it stay here or be removed?Spatulai (talk) 18:38, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Additional structure to page[edit]

Hello, It looks like the History section of this page and the Esports section could use some additional structure. Possibly by year or topic/phase of the company? Does anyone have any ideas for this or have any reason as to not add some additional structure to these sections of the page?(Introessive (talk) 12:10, 28 July 2022 (UTC))[reply]

Requesting a few quick fixes[edit]

Hello! In the interest of transparency, I want to first establish that I'm a conflict-of-interest editor. I work for Riot Games and have come here to propose some updates to the company's article. I've added myself to the Talk page's COI template and will request edits in this space rather than changing the article myself.

To start, I wanted to suggest a few quick fixes:

  • In the infobox, Dylan Jadeja is listed as Riot's CFO. That used to be true, but his title is now President.[1]
  • The current CFO is Mark Sottosanti.[2]
  • In the article introduction, as well as in the Esports section, it says that Riot operates 14 League of Legends esports leagues. Again, the info's slightly outdated. The correct figure is 12 leagues.[3][4]

I'm gonna tag in a couple editors who made some recent updates to the page, User:IceWelder and User:Hohum, but if anyone else wants to help out, that'd be great too. Thank you in advance to anyone who takes the time to look this request over. JHixson at Riot Games (talk) 17:29, 27 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@JHixson at Riot Games: Thanks for going about this the right way, not a lot of people do that. I've fixed the esports leagues figure and replaced Jadeja with Sottosanti in the infobox, though there wasn't a place in the infobox for the President so I just kind of removed his name from it alltogether. He's still mentioned later in the article, of course. Anyway, if you have any more questions let us know. ― TUNA × 13:32, 28 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the help, User:Tunakanski! I do have one follow-up request: could we add a line to the Key people field that reads "Dylan Jadeja (President)"? I know that might crowd the infobox section a little bit. If you think five "key" people is too many, I would suggest dropping Sottosanti, since he's the lowest-ranking member of that group (he actually reports to Dylan). Here's the link to the president corporate title article if it helps since the others are linked: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/President_(corporate_title). Sorry for being nitpicky; I'm just trying to make sure that the company's top-most executives are in there. No worries if you'd prefer to keep it as is. Totally get that for most companies the CFO would be more senior. JHixson at Riot Games (talk) 19:51, 7 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think five is too many in this instance, so I went ahead and added Jadeja to the list. If another editor does think it's too crowded then they can definitely remove one or two of the names if they feel the need to do so but for now I think it's fine as is. ― TUNA × 01:02, 9 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
User:Tunakanski: Thanks so much. And yeah, if another editor comes through and thinks that field needs to be trimmed, then fair enough. I've posted a draft for a new Entertainment section below, if you want to check that out. If not, no worries, but I thought I'd mention it. JHixson at Riot Games (talk) 19:26, 20 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting Entertainment section draft review[edit]

Hey again! My initial edit request has been answered, so I'm now going to move on to suggesting improvements to the body of the article. There's currently little information on the page about Riot's work in the entertainment industry (music, TV shows, etc.), so I researched and composed a brief new section on that part of the company's business. It makes sense to me that, if the page has an Esports section, it should also have an Entertainment one, though I'll obviously leave that determination up to independent editors. Here's the text of my Entertainment draft:

Riot has an internal entertainment division that produces TV shows, music, comics, and is exploring films.[1] In August 2021, Riot launched a virtual record label called Riot Games Music.[2] In November 2021, the company's first television production, the animated action-adventure series Arcane, debuted on Netflix.[3] The show's first season won multiple awards at the 2022 Annies[4] and an Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program.[5]
In March 2022, Riot hired executives with experience at entertainment companies such as Netflix, Paramount, and HBO Max to head development of film, TV, and music endeavors built around Riot's intellectual property.[3]

If this draft were accepted, it might be wise to excise some of the details about Arcane from the current History section. Again, I defer to the judgment of independent editors on that. Looking forward to seeing what the editor community thinks. Thanks! JHixson at Riot Games (talk) 19:25, 20 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

FYI, just because the article has an esports section doesn't mean it should have an entertainment one. Furthermore, Riot's entertainment division is little known, so i think the info here should be consolidated into the History section. Quetstar (talk) 21:26, 20 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yup, I understand, User:Quetstar. Riot's entertainment division is obviously not as big or well-known as the esports one. The music has been going for a while but I get that Arcane is still new. Maybe in the future when we get more content out. How about folding info from the above draft into the History section. Would you be interested in doing that? Alternatively, I could propose some new History copy. Let me know how you'd like to proceed. And thanks for the feedback! JHixson at Riot Games (talk) 01:37, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Folding the info would be the best option IMO. Quetstar (talk) 19:04, 1 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds good, User:Quetstar. I've been thinking about how some of the info from the Entertainment draft above could be integrated into the History. Here's what I came up with:
Riot acquired Hypixel Studios in April 2020, which they had been investing in over the previous eighteen months to help them publish Hytale, a voxel-based sandbox game.[1] Also in April, Riot announced plans to establish a Singapore office later that year. Riot Games Singapore is to support Riot's existing titles and will have a major focus on developing the company's newer titles.[2] Jason Bunge was hired as Riot Games' chief marketing officer in October 2020.[3] In August 2021, Riot launched a virtual record label called Riot Games Music.[4] In October 2021, the company bought Kanga, a services firm involved in "fan hubs", merchandising, and content aggregation.[5]
Riot Games collaborated with French animation studio Fortiche to release an animated series, Arcane. The series was released worldwide in November 2021 on Netflix, and by parent company Tencent in China, and received a favorable critical reception.[6][7] In March 2022, Riot Games announced that it had invested in Fortiche and, as a result, its chief content officer Brian Wright and director of corporate development Brendan Mulligan were joining Fortiche's board of directors.[8] That same month, Riot also hired executives from Netflix, Paramount, and HBO Max to head development of film, TV, and music endeavors built around the company's intellectual property.[9]

In case it's not clear, the new content I'm proposing is in green. Everything else is as it already exists on the page. Would those be reasonable additions to the History? Let me know if you've got thoughts or concerns. Thanks! JHixson at Riot Games (talk) 04:43, 30 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the delay, that looks good to me, but I think that a second opinion should do the trick. Quetstar (talk) 01:06, 15 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome, thank you User:Quetstar. I'm going to tap User:Masem on the shoulder here, since they made a recent update to the article. Masem, would you mind reviewing the proposed changes above? I believe everything is relatively easy to follow, but I'm here to answer questions as needed. And of course, if you don't want to review these changes, that's completely fine as well. Thanks! JHixson at Riot Games (talk) 22:16, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I concur with Quetstar and have applied the requested changes. Happy (requested) editing! ZsinjTalk 01:21, 2 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks so much for your help, User:Zsinj! And User:Quetstar as well. I have a new edit request below, about updating the Criticism and controversies section, in case either one of you are interested in fixing the page up further. If not, no worries. I really appreciate the time you've already put in. Thank you! JHixson at Riot Games (talk) 19:42, 6 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting updates to Criticism and controversies section[edit]

Hello again! I'm back to request a few updates to the Criticism and controversies section. Since I'm looking to add a decent amount of new content, and I wanted to make sure editors can see how that content might be integrated into the existing section, I uploaded a full section draft to my user page. To briefly summarize, that draft:

  • Adds details on specific actions Riot has taken in response to the gender discrimination/sexual harassment allegations; I took care to source this information from particularly reputable outlets like the Washington Post, the L.A. Times, and Kotaku, which describe how Riot responded by doing things like reforming its hiring practices, adding more women to its leadership team, etc.
  • Removes one unsourced sentence under the Dispute over forced arbitration clauses subsection about employees threatening to walk out over forced arbitration clauses
  • Adds information about Riot's donations to groups working to help those affected by the Russian invasion of Ukraine

For ease of reference, everything that's new in the section draft is in green. I also reorganized the Allegations of gender discrimination and sexual harassment subsection, so that it starts with the Kotaku report, details the company's response (Company response), then summarizes the legal fallout (Legal action). My goal was to group related events together and order things chronologically, so that the controversy and its consequences are easy to follow.

I'm not oblivious to the fact that I'm a Riot employee asking for changes to be made to a section that doesn't exactly flatter the company. But to be clear, nearly everything that's in there right now has been reported on pretty extensively and deserves to be in a Wiki article about the company. I'm just trying to add some context and fresh facts that explain what has happened and been reported on by reliable sources since the last time the section was updated. I'll now get out of the way and let editors take a look at what I've proposed. I look forward to hearing everybody's feedback! JHixson at Riot Games (talk) 19:41, 6 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

An update here: User:ImaginesTigers had replied to let me know that this edit request is a big lift for the site's community of volunteer editors. Although they deleted their comment, I appreciated their perspective about the volume of work involved in reviewing the whole draft. I was trying to show all of the changes in context, but I can see that might be confusing. I kept all of the section's existing material except one sentence (noted in the post above) intact. The new information I've added is green, so that it's easy to identify. Regardless, it's still a lot of stuff for editors to examine.
Maybe, rather than tackling the whole section at once, someone could take a look at the Response to 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine part of my draft? It's relatively short, and all I did there was add a couple detailed sentences on donations Riot made to organizations helping Ukrainians negatively affected by the invasion. I've broken that out as a specific request below.
If there's anything else I can do to make this task a little bit more manageable for editors, please let me know. Thank you to everybody who has fielded my edit requests, for taking the time. I really appreciate it. Cheers! JHixson at Riot Games (talk) 16:38, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting update for Response to 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine[edit]

As mentioned above, I'm a Riot employee and I have an addition to request to the Response to 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine section, based on relatively new press coverage. Can editors review and update the existing content with the following details?

On March 5, 2022, Riot announced it would be donating the proceeds from battle passes sold in several of its games, as well as the money it made from selling a bee skin in League of Legends, to a trio of humanitarian relief organizations operating in Ukraine.[1][2] At the end of March Riot made three donations, totaling $5.4 million, to International Medical Corps, Doctors Without Borders, and the International Committee of the Red Cross.[3][4]

I'm going to ask User:IceWelder if they wouldn't mind reviewing this request. Skimming the article's edit history, I noticed they've been pretty active over the past few months. Of course if they aren't interested, that's fine. Just thought I would check. JHixson at Riot Games (talk) 04:38, 14 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I won't be able to look into this properly at this time due to IRL commitments taking up most of my time, sorry. Perhaps @Masem is better suited for such matters? IceWelder [] 07:38, 14 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
More than fine that you don't have time for this, User:IceWelder. I appreciate you letting me know. I'm going to ask User:Tunakanski if they wouldn't mind reviewing, since they were helpful with another request I had a few months back.
Tuna, if you've got the time and inclination, go ahead and take a look. Thanks! JHixson at Riot Games (talk) 21:36, 27 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
First, I want to state that @Tunakanski has commited the requested changes to the Ukraine subsection. However, I have declined the rest of the request because of the sensitive nature of the Criticism section, especially the fact that it includes information relating to allegations of toxic workplace culture and practices. With that said, I am closing this. Quetstar (talk) 04:52, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The level of detail in the proposed edit was far too promotional. Wikipedia isn't a platform for this kind of PR. I have trimmed the added content to be more neutral and more succinct. Grayfell (talk) 21:54, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, the Ukraine subsection is more balanced now. Quetstar (talk) 23:33, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you to User:Tunakanski, User:Quetstar, and User:Grayfell for reviewing this request. The language you've arrived at seems fair. I really appreciate your taking the time. JHixson at Riot Games (talk) 19:35, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting Operations section review[edit]

Hello! I'm back to propose an Operations section for this article. I've seen similar sections in other corporate articles and thought it might be a good idea to collect important details about how Riot functions under one heading. My proposed section draft is as follows:

Riot Games is owned by the Chinese technology conglomerate Tencent.[1] Riot is led by CEO Nicolo Laurent, as well as its co-chairmen Brandon Beck and Mark Merrill.[2] Its headquarters is in Los Angeles, California.[3] As of January 2023, the company had approximately 4,500 employees and 20 offices located across North America, Europe, and Asia.[4][5][6]

I was thinking this might logically fit between the History and Esports sections, but I'll leave its placement up to independent editors. And obviously, if anyone has thoughts on how this section could be improved, I'm happy to hear it. Thanks! JHixson at Riot Games (talk) 04:37, 29 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, User:IceWelder, I know you had some commitments earlier in the year that kept you from being able to review one of my previous requests, but I spotted a couple of edits you’d made to this article recently and thought I’d check with you again. Any chance you still have an interest in helping out with requests for this page? Of course, I completely understand if you’re still busy with other things. I appreciate your time and consideration. Thanks! JHixson at Riot Games (talk) 21:38, 28 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@JHixson at Riot Games:. This is a volunteer project. Pestering specific sympathetic users is both disruptive and a potential violation of Wikipedia's guidelines on canvassing. You already have a request open. As that template indicates, as of this writing there are 136 requests ahead of yours. Do not attempt to skip ahead in line. Do not ask for special treatment. Being polite isn't the same as being civil. Grayfell (talk) 01:19, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at the proposal itself, I have set the template to answered. The current 'history' section is too bloated, and far, far too much of that history has been inappropriately shoved-off into a WP:CSECTION. Adding yet another mundane PR-minded section give the appearance of pushing-down the critical content, which is exactly the same problem we saw with the last request. Grayfell (talk) 01:27, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I believe it's misleading to call it American when it's owned by a Tencent Holdings Ltd., the Chinese multinational technology conglomerate and holding company headquartered in Shenzhen. I think corrected ownership should be in the very first paragraph to prevent confusion over it being called "an American video game developer, publisher, and esports tournament organizer". Odin Vex (talk) 13:47, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The company was founded by Americans in America and has headquarters in America with American staff. The company was American before Tencent bought it, and the nationality did not magically shift because of it. That would be like saying that Lamborghini and Bentley are German car brands merely because Volkswagen Group owns them. That Tencent bought Riot Games is pointed out early in the lead text (first paragraph, third sentence), so this does not really need further amends. IceWelder [] 09:04, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting CEO transition update[edit]

Hello again! I'm back on this Talk page to ask for a couple small updates. In May, Riot announced that our CEO, Nicolo Laurent, would be stepping down from his role and our then-president, Dylan Jadeja, would be taking over as chief executive. That change, which has been in a transitional phase over the past few months, is now complete per [this release]. Would it be possible to remove Laurent from the infobox and update Jadeja's title?

And if so, would it also be possible to add a brief sentence so that the last paragraph of the History section reads like this?

In May 2023, Riot Games announced that Dylan Jadeja would succeed Nicolo Laurent as the company's CEO.[1] In September 2023, the company announced that the transition was complete, formally installing Jadeja as CEO.[2]

To be absolutely clear, that first sentence is already in the article. The second one is mine. I'll now step aside and let non-COI editors decide what's best. Thanks! JHixson at Riot Games (talk) 18:53, 2 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Implemented Please note that since it was not addressed in the edit request whether Jadeja would continue as company president after taking on the role as CEO (and because one of the provided sources did not explicate on this issue further) the position of president as listed in the infobox was deleted.[a] Regards,  Spintendo  19:24, 2 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks User:Spintendo! JHixson at Riot Games (talk) 01:44, 13 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Notes

  1. ^ If the infobox's "president" entry had been allowed to remain, Jadeja's name would have been listed there twice, because the edit request asked specifically for text to be added while specifically leaving out whether any text would be deleted.
