Woman in Hull pendant to the Man facing forward - Source[edit]

Woman in Hull

Hi @Jane023:, Is there a handy source for the proposition that the woman in Hull was married to the man facing forward (the one-but-last couple in the gallery)? I'd be very grateful. --- Frans Fowler (talk) 02:00, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

... grateful in particular because I'd like to make an article about the woman in Hull (one day), so perhaps you could give me a ref. in a copiable and pastable (sp?) form? Very best wishes --- Frans Fowler (talk) 03:55, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The short answer is no. Though her portrait is in Hull today, she was either from Haarlem or travelled to Haarlem with her family to sit for her portrait. We know this because Hals only painted individual portraits in his Haarlem workshop. Only one painting is documented as being painted elsewhere, and that one was finished by someone else because Hals couldn't stand the daily commute to Amsterdam needed to finish it. That said, almost all of his sitters are unidentified, as is she. So there is no source linking to her engagement or marriage, and indeed the sitter for the portrait of her husband is also still unidentified. I do believe that one day through improved access to Haarlem archives online and cross-referencing possible sitters, that this information will become available one day. I think there were only about 2000 burgers who paid taxes in Haarlem during this woman's early adulthood who could possibly have paid for this portrait. For the sources documenting this painting you can consult the various catalogs published over the years. Seymour Slive included this painting and its pendant in his three-part catalog in 1974.
