I've been impressed with the sheer size and height of this obelisk, and consider it to be one of Harrisburg's hidden surprises. When I encountered the article on Obelisks, I felt that its grandeur deserved a spot on the list of notable US obelisks, and an article of its own. Hence, I was inspired to create my first Wikipedia article from scratch!
One of the antecedent events that prompted moving the obelisk was the increase in fatal accidents from cars hitting it after Second Street was made one way northbound. Does anyone recall when that change occured? I recall as a child that people were joking that if they did not move it, soon there would be more deaths from the monument itself than the number of veterans being memoroalized. Vets groups opposed the move. Anybody recall when (1) Second Street became One Way North, and (2) when the monunent was actually dismantled at its prior location?
