User:Noah Salzman/Focal plane array testing

The article might make a nice replacement but the lead has an issue, the firstline definition is not supposed to repeat the title itself because it doesn't help in explaining things. It's like saying "A television guide is a guide to television programmes." You need to alter the wording of the definition to hash this out. Hello. I noticed that you removed the link to potashinvestingnews.com on the potash page saying it was spam. I work for the company that publishes the site and we did not put it up there. We were happy when we saw it there, but thought it was in the wrong spot and should have been listed as an external link. I think we would be violating the guidelines by putting it there ourselves.   • Hi Mike, it is very tempting for those of us in business to find a place on Wikipedia where one can put links to one's business. However, the goal of Wikipedia is to build a world-class encyclopedia; Wikipedia's is not an appropriate place for marketing activities. If there were an encyclopedic article on Potash investing it might make sense to add a link to your site... but otherwise I don't see why it would aid the encyclopedia by adding a link anywhere else. There are many better places on the internet other than Wikipedia to advertise your business, especially since Wikipedia uses "no follow" URLs. This is just my opinion of course... since every user of Wikipedia is a potential editor you are welcome to come to a different conclusion. What is the reason you think that the term Dook referring to Duke University should be added to the Dook disambiguation page? BejinhanTalk 03:29, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

The usage should be documented here because it is an established and well referenced slang term... albeit one that is offensive to Duke alma mater. If we set aside the emotional response the term creates and look at it coldly from our role as encyclopedia writers it is no different than our documenting and explaining of other potentially offensive slang terms such as tit, geek, or dago. Would a mediation request initiated by those of Italian heritage -- to prevent the publishing of the disambig entry of dago -- be justified? It would not. The reason the dook version of this story is a little different is because, in the past, the folks editing the disambig page were purely vandal-happy trolls. Times have changed and we now 1) have solid references and 2) have someone (me) interested in documenting the term for it's own sake, not as a jab at Duke University. —Noah 17:15, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
