Newport/Costa Mesa/etc. user group

I work in Newport Beach (commute from Long Beach) and would be interested in a user group. What did you have in mind? Epolk 23:56, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

The only preliminary thought I had was to meet perhaps once a month in our community clubhouse (very close to Fashion Island). But so far, you have been the only responder to my announcement ... and I think we should have at least 5-6 people to start with. Tagging in use article

Hi there. You asked about tagging articles on my talk page. I have a few suggestions to answer your specific questions. My main point, though, is that Wikipedia:Editing policy (which is a core wikipedia policy) says that articles do not need to be perfect, and therefore it is OK if you leave an article as a stub or whatever as you are working on it. Since articles do not have owners it is also OK if someone else comes along to help, add a category, complain about the lack of categories etc. You can always leave a note on the article talk page about your plan, and this is a collaborative encyclopedia. You can always undo whatever someone else does if you think it will let you improve the article more.

The {{inuse}} template specifically asks others NOT to edit, and that is something we don't do lightly here. It's designed to stop those annoying problems where two people are editing literally at the same time and so cannot save. That's why it's only for a few hours/minutes.

If you're worried that your article may be deleted you can put {{Underconstruction}} on the article. That explains the article is not great yet, but rather than discouraging others it encourages them to help. This template can be left on the article for a while, but since articles don't have to be perfect remember to take it off as soon as possible. It may stop others from stepping in to help because they think they'll be in your way.

If you want total control, you can always create the article as a subpage of your space. Do this by going to your userpage User:Epolk then add a forward slash to the URL and make up a new name for your subpage. That page is then in your "space" and no one will come across it. When it's ready you can then move it into place with the move feature at the top of the page (if the article is new) or simply copy-and-paste it over the existing content of the page.

Removing dupliate wikilinks

I notice you are removing duplicate wikilinks using AWB. This might be worth sharing at Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Settings Rgds, Rich Farmbrough 12:05 28 August 2006 (GMT).

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I am not using an automated process. I do it manually by clicking on the links in the Alerts section to jump to the links and removing all the duplicates after the first one (unless the first one is in an image tag, in which case I remove that one and leave the rest. Re: Fire engine redirects

From WP:REDIRECT#Don't fix links to redirects that aren't broken:

"Some editors are tempted, upon finding links using a legitimate redirect target, to edit the page to "fix" the link so that it points "straight" at the "correct" page. Unless the link displays incorrectly — for instance, if the link is to a misspelling, or other unprintworthy redirects, or if the hint that appears when you hover over the link is misleading — there is no need to edit the link. The link may be deliberate, may consolidate related information in one place, or may indicate possible future articles.

Most especially, there should never be a need to replace [[redirect]] with [[direct|redirect]].

Some editors are under the mistaken impression that fixing such links improves the capacity of the Wikipedia servers. Because editing a page is seemingly thousands of times more expensive for the servers than following a redirect, the opposite is true if anything. It's inadvisable to worry about performance."
