underlining

Hey, I had a follow up question regarding the underlining of text in wikipedia, I hope you don't mind me asking you.

I was actually wondering about underlining for an article that is not in wikipedia, but a local wiki format website. I looked at how you did the underlining in your reply, but for some reason when I emulated it, it didn't work for me, and underlined all text after the first < u >.

Citation templates

Hey. Yeah there are different types of templates. News would be one you use for a news article, generally off a news site, for example, the BBC, or CNN or something (many of the Formula Three Euroseries references are no doubt news articles). Then there is web for generic web pages, myabe one with statistics or something, you would use the web template. For the FIA regulations manual, I would use book, or report, or something. Have a look at each template, you have to judge for yourself the most appropriate. I would maybe ask on the WP:CITET talk page if you are unsure, as I'm not an expert. Looking at the article some more, I would even recommend converting some of the external links into inline citations (they can be cited multiple times) and using the web template. I would not alter the citations manually, it is better practise to use the templates (IMHO). It means there less chance of errors, and there are fields for everything. First, I'd like to apologize if you think that I failed the article solely on the fact you were on a wikibreak. I have not seen your previous GA articles and was rating the article based on the GA criteria. We currently have a very large backlog and I did not want to leave the article on hold for several weeks until you came back from your wikibreak (also I didn't know when you were coming back or that you were on wikibreak when I first reviewed it) nor pass it, because it did not meet the criteria. I know that it is inconvenient for you to be gone on a break for whatever reasons, but I must go by the criteria and deadlines that have been established. Many people work their butts off also on other articles, but I can't simply pass it based on the amount of work but the quality of the work. I may assess articles differently than another editor, but I do so to help improve the quality of the article before it is passed as a GA. The article is good quality, but just needs a few tinkering edits to get it to GA. I have passed the article, excellent work. If the grammar suggestions I placed on the talk page do conflict with European English (ex: 17/20-year-old) then change it back to whatever you think is correct. I keep learning about how the American and European English differ in some spelling and grammar characteristics every day on Wikipedia. Unfortunately, I usually grade articles based on American English because that's what I'm used to, but I'm attempting to get better at. WP Motorsport

Regarding your question on my talk page personally, yes. I'm assosiated with a few different WikiProjects Professional Wrestling and Football and they are both (like Motorsport) pretty big projects, which use the table.

Also, really the template should be on all motorsport related pages. It doesn't matter whether they've been in F1 or something else, there all assosiated with Motorsport. They've come through the system, they haven't just jumped to Formula One have they?

Foreign language citations

No-one voted in favour in the first vote. Even though only three people voted at WP:MS, I'd say that the consensus has gone against the proposal. Footer Help

Well I've developed my portal so far but it's really annoying me that I can not get the footers properly. I want to put it so it has one link on the right that says 'Read More...', linking to the original article of the subpage and one on the left saying 'Archive' that will lead to the page where other users can add selected aritcles, quotes, etc. I can't remember my footer subpage, but it says it in my coding, if you could fix that for me, that would be great. Ivytheplant

I apologize for my initial attitude. I understand that people here are only human, but that's why traditional encyclopedias are so much more reliable than wikipedia for information. A committe can more thoroughly evaluate the information and account for errors. I watched large errors in basic physics principles go unnoticed for weeks on wikipedia and yet, "emo" was fixed in a matter of minutes. I mean, god forbid someone get inaccurate information on emo. Wikipedia's strong suit is current events and popular culture, but beyond that everything has to be taken with a grain of salt. This is why I, and many other academics tell students to either not use wikipedia for research (excluding popular culture and current events) or for every wikipedia link, back it up with a credible primary source. It's also why I found it astonishing that an article I wrote about a notable music group, which is definitely a popular culture category, would be immediately pounced on, almost immediately after I submitted it. My anger and frustration was not about that. It was about the poor quality of responses I received in trying to get information. I asked one question (that should have been easily answerable by a veteran editor since it wasn't covered in help pages) over and over before anyone even responded. I reiterated that I had already been to all the help pages and found them to be of little help in my case. I asked specific questions and got responses that were either uselessly vague or just directed me back to the help pages. On my end, it seemed as if the people responding (save one) just couldn't be bothered and wanted me to shut up and go away. <The preceding text was added by Ivytheplant 18:11, 6 April 2007>

Color me bad

Thank you for reply to my Help desk question on color - colour. The list_of_colors article is fun although the CSS is over my head right now. My inexperience with markup language is why I seem to be struggling with templates and certain how-to. For example, embarrassing to ask, but how come I can not see certain types of edits on the edit page for an article such as it's colour scheme? I could search again in the help pages or how-to guides, but what might you suggest on how to learn about the "hidden" edits such as color? Only if you have the time, thank you so very much! Looking at the Motorsport, and looking at the 1930 Grand Prix seasons etc. I thought you'd like this source I found on the Internet - perhaps you can use it. It covers Grand Prix winners from 1895 to 1949, things like the Grands Epreuves, Indy500, and stuff like the Targa Florio etc. I don't know if this is an improvement on what you have already got, or if this is new, but I thought that since you appear to be co-ordinating the Motorsport WikiProject that the best person to give it to was yourself, even if you pass it on. Motorsport infobox

OK, I agree with what you are saying. If the information is available then it should be added. However, when I went to add the template to British Formula One Series, I couldn't find any data about any teams in the series. I know which drivers ran which cars, but not the teams that were running them. I suppose I could add a question mark or something like that for those fields. I can add constructor and engine info, but I'm not sure how relevant it is, being as most of the cars were second hand.

I realise making the change to the template was a bit bold on my part, without considering why those fields might have been left. You are welcome to revert the changes back. Readro 17:21, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Harding High School

I am 84 years old and need help to put up a template for schools for and about the history of the Harding High School, Charlotte, North Carolina from 1935 until the name was changed after 1957 to Harding University. M.H. you have been the best I have ever dealt with for explaining. Even with your expert explaining, I am a little slow on learning. i.e. when you said click on the + I had a hard time finding it. About adding to Harding University, I will try that tomorrow. The history is very important to me about the high school for several reasons and history in general is a subject that could us a whole Wiki site as it cover even before the beginning of recorded time and has been written and re-written by people with their own opinions. User:Showerscience

I am a new user and am finding out that there are protocols i must follow if i am to continue contributing to the subject of shower science. I am a "non entity" as far as knowing what i am doing with the wiki, but had done so more recently because i am motivated by a rather strong need to save both myself and others on our globe collectively. Especially if i feel i really can help..

I have noted that the entry for "shower science" is pending deletion and would probably be very disappointed if this was to occur.

The research and verification of this rather new science is supported by verifications conducted in a showering research facility used to test amongst other things, how much water is required to shower comfortably if very little heat escapes, and if thermally heavy masses are removed, during showering.

"The results are astonishing" and i have not included these forms of support to the article so that i could include these later.

This was prudent in retrospect.

I though they should be included in the very near future because it is only the introduction of shower science in this area that is of concern to me because currently, other than the research facility i own, and the findings verified by federal political members in my electorate in Australia and others being friends and colleagues, there is no other research or science that covers the shower in its totality per se.

All other science has tended to look at specifics, like the shower head, or the temperature of water at the drain, or the amount of soap that is used whilst showering, and others.

In effect they have issolated the functions of a shower in to little areas so that the study of the shower as an engine for instance has not yet occurred.

I think i want to change this and consider it an imperative amongst others for our continued survival on this ill fated planet.

Materially this is supported by my patents and other applications which are more than one for this area, and of course the hybrid shower does indeed exist and is even architecturally of a Frank Loyd Wright style.

The shower screen door is "evacuated glass", making it one of the most highly insulated showers in history..

The internal masses are largely removed thus comprising composite ultra thin laminates upon high density styrene. Warm ups from a an ambient temperature "beginning" are in less than two minutes so that the shower head, at this time, is no longer required for the lathering process to occur.

There is considerable interest in my findings here amongst a growing number in Australia and from some particular members of our federal government.

In all this, do think you can help, eg.ie. How do i present these findings so that they are no longer considered "new research", causing the new subject to fall outside permitted wiki content.

A recent change to the shower science page included a link to Hybrid shower and effectively remains unchanged in any other respect other than a further link to Shower science and vice versa. A link to sunfrost concepts which is the only other work i know of to improve this impoverished area of knowledge was added to Shower science to support the content of Shower science and its objective right to exist. E.g shower science.

i will leave Hybrid shower unchanged until these administrative issues are guided since i "had hoped" to combine these two areas for the benefit of the global community in the wiki. Wont be adding additional material to Hybrid bathroom either until then without help or guidance.

I did not want to write a complete article even though information is bursting at the seams.

It is not my intention to control an article as this would be just too naive.

Having a web site is for that, even though even that is about as secure Iraq these days, considering the problems i have in just keeping my domain names from the likes of those like snapnames and others that are able to transfer your IP to another registrar.

I have already commented that at least physical laws are the same everywhere in our universe, and that man made laws are different every where.

This is at great odds with merely trying to exist. At least the universe does not have the problem with editorial and having to change laws for one planet and not another, or willy nilly make new ones here and there..

I am best suited to materializing subject matter not administering the fine print in an article i started and had no intention to finish as i don't have the lifetimes to do it.

i don't write about any other subject and patents are already enough.

If shower science is not acknowledged it means the world is not ready for it yet, and so it needs to be disguised in some other way.

"Having potential" is not good enough, i don't want to be endlessly writing bits for it, and i did hack it down considerably myself to allow others to contribute.

It is not my aim to own it whereas owning an IP address is.

Deleting Showerscience "and" shower science user name is fine.

Deleting Hybrid Shower is not something i will consider, rather i will leave it in embryo for others which is what i intended for shower science.

Further to that, any inclusion of my own material under these conventions may not permit me to include any of my products or patents in fact anything as verification.

I apologize if what i did seemed arbitrary. My experience is limited in some areas, but I've been at AfD a good deal when many such articles come up, and this is the invariable conclusion. If you want to test this one, that would be the place. I agree that it is pretty minimal. (I also am not at all sure I agree with the practice that all are N, and I actually !voted otherwise the first few times I saw it at AfD, but it was so clear that consensus was otherwise that I saw no point in trying to affect it. see WP:AFDP section 1, point 3.

Videoblogging article

Howdy Adrian,

I saw you responded to the vidoeblogging post on the request for feedback page.

I am at my wits end with user Pdelongchamp... she has driven off ALL would be editors to the page over the last few years through her deleting of EVERY attempt at a positive contribution atleast twice over the last two years. For example... she deleted references to four books on the subject matter no less then 5 times before finally allowing it. I have tried to collaborate with her... reason with her work with her... but at the very least she's acting as the pages's personal gatekeeper... not to be negative... but the terms delete monger / or troll I think describe her actions. She is now threatening me with blocking which I believe is further abuse and inappropropriate. I appeal to you for feedback on the matter... moderation and/or some sort of injunction to prevent her from at the very least deleting all contributions so long as she continues to not so much as contribute one positive contribution herself.

I know the videoblogging article is NOT perfect.... but neither are 99% of the articles on wikipedia... the process is messy... edits often need to be rewritten, researched, documented... but an article cannot evolve at all if all edits are immediately deleted. I believe her actions are clearly anti-thetical to the collaborative spirit of wikipedia.

Thanks adrian for your comments and work on the videoblogging article, on user Pdelongchamp's talk page and my talk page. I have added an at length response on my talk page to Pdelongchamp, as well as documented his retributive editing on the bottom of the page. He succeeded in deleting an article I contributed an edit too. It could have been worse, it can always be worse. Which is why it's important to focus on resolving not escallating. I very much like your idea to move a copy of the videoblogging article to my personal page and work on it there where I could have some protection of it and encourage collaboration. I had already moved my edits off wikipedia to a pbwiki, but I may bring the article back here. It's a great experiment to see how the articles will differntiate over time with different editing styles. Plus if enough consensus is built on the article it could be be wholesale copied to the main vlog page on occasion just to see Pdelongchamp tear it appart. I just hope in revealing to Pdelongchamp that his disruptive actions are shown that he doesn't get more devious in trying to hide his negatory actions. Sometimes just holding up the mirror causes people not to rectify with their actions, but to further cloak them from view. I guess it's still a type of escallation. The only other thing I can think of is to just walk away and let him deal with stub he's made of the article. If you have any other good ideas let me know. I'm still hoping against hope that he will reinstate the 90% of the article he deleted and submit it for some sort of peer review. I absolutely know it's not perfect, but that's not the point. AM Only

I appreciate your trying to give me help. I'll try to explain the logic of what I did and maybe, through further research, I'll be able to correct the problems.

My article entitled "AM Only", which I identified as a stub knowing that it would not be a full encyclopedic article based on only my efforts, was intended to inform people about one of the possible choices for adult standards radio delivered by satellite to radio stations. "Music Of Your Life" was already here, but it is certainly not a full article and is not even identified as a stub (I already know where I can personally find content on the web that would improve it, using the proper steps to avoid plagiarism). "Stardust" no longer qualifies as standards, though that is an opinion expressed not only by myself but also by certain members of the www.radio-info.com website. Nevertheless, after making a contribution to an article about what was once my favorite radio station, I felt that the site lacked something. There were a couple of brief mentions of the Stardust satellite format, but nothing to really describe it or its history. In the process of doing research, I couldn't find much at all, but I put what I could on this site. Still, no one criticized my stub article.

So I set out to do the same for what has now become my favorite adult standards format. Okay, Music Of Your Life is better, but I can't pick it up around here. The information available on line is so far quite hard to locate. www.radio-info.com has opinions and descriptions, but they can't be used here. So I did my best to find what I could. It is true that "A New Variety Of America's Best Music" describes what happened to the format in or around 2000. I have found no citations but I remember the description well. I didn't mean it to say it was, in fact, "America's Best Music". In fact, in my opinion, it was garbage, but of course I couldn't put that in my stub article. And it wasn't even (in my opinion) "adult standards" any more, even though that was the corporate name of the product.

I have heard the format lately much more often since a station in my immediate area began using it. It's much better than it was. And other www.radio-info.com posters agree. Not all do, and some think it's still garbage. Maybe they haven't tried it lately. But I felt that the format's history needed to reflect this. No, I couldn't say "Some say" it sounds better. The best I could do was one site's description "The Greatest Songs Of All Time". When I put that in the article, I was thinking of that description as referring to the traditional image of standards. Of course, it wouldn't have to. Even an oldies station which I would consider garbage could use the description. And, of course, I didn't cite a source because the site that used it had not stated that the format was moving back in the right direction. It was just a description of the music. I guess I should have at least cited that site. Although now I realize where the idea came from that I was advertising.

Anyway, I guess I should have tried to say all this while arguing against the article's deletion. I didn't even think about these glowing descriptions of the music because I was thinking people could read my mind. Vchimpanzee 18:04, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

AM Only, continued

Thanks for your response. You said I was using weasel words, but I was making an effort to avoid them. I thought of another place where I might have done something like that. I was looking for hard evidence that AM radio is no longer highly regarded as a place to hear music. Somehow I'm not coming up with that. I'm having even less luck finding evidence that "AM Only", the radio format, was a worthwhile solution to the problem. I know that I've seen the statement "somewhere". I know that Billboard magazine honored Chick Watkins for his efforts to make certain radio stations successful. As I recall (and I can't say this in a Wikipedia article), the Las Vegas station using his ability to select music was no. 1 in the market in the early 90s. Now, is this format successful today? I don't know. I can't find hard evidence. But a lot of stations still use it. It's 20 years old this year. I know that from somewhere. A lot of Westwood One's satellite services, and a lot of those from ABC and Jones, are no longer around. I believe this to be true because I remember there being all these others that are no longer shown on the web sites. Where is the hard evidence of all this??? When I get through--if I do--this could be a really good thing because searching for all this is so hard right now. www.radio-info.com makes it SOUND like all this information is readily available, but it seems to be mostly opinions and such.

Regarding all the stub articles, I certainly didn't think they qualified, but I figure if these people can get away with it (so far), so can I. At least I can help provide what I know. People on www.radio-info.com are compiling the information by asking each other questions. I was content with providing help there, but it does more good here. In some cases I can find documentation, and I will, thanks to library databases.

Taking some time off

I'm going to take a few days off from Wikipedia. I haven't checked back at www.radio-info.com, but I will remind people that, when possible, they should make sure they find sources. I may also find people willing to create the stub articles who can do more than I can. As for me, I'll have to start concentrating on finding the articles that back up what I've already said.

One of the problems is that one city's newspaper did not microfilm most of its articles on TV and radio (since they were in the Sunday TV section, which was too much trouble to microfilm). I have reminded them numerous times that this is foolish. In fact, they had the articles in the paid web archive for a while, but some genius decided they fit in a category that should be deleted (something related to syndication or something like that, but the guy was a staff writer; in fact, the way they treated him when he left, and not by choice, he'd rather forget he worked there). Sort of like articles here that don't meet the standards.

Actually, here maybe they aren't deleted. You said you weren't an administrator. I should have realized that no one who actually deletes has the time to spend on me, and I appreciate what you've done. But the newspaper web site didn't have them in some backup file waiting for someone to change his or her mind. And the editor of the newspaper didn't see any of this as a big deal! I was endeavouring to add this young band into this Wikipedia as they have achieved some serious notability in Scotland and not as an attempt to look for business.. I am basically trying to list them in that interseting section on family bands and bands with siblings.

I do represent them but this would hardly be the place to look for gigs. I don't have any probelm getting work for these girls and they do appear on Wikipedia already I notice under 'The Skye Music Festival' whger they are appearing with many other well known acts.

I thought this was meant to be fun/interesting/educational. I don't even see how to reply to the lady who put the message on my talk page Who could have seen these brilliant girls when they were on tour in California a month ago.

Do you have any suggestions. Should I just delete the page I made and account likewise?

good morning. And a beautiful one..up here in The Highlands. Having done what I thought was removing all the text from the GiveWay page that I made, I did a search for it this morning and it's still there.

In the interim I took a look at your User Info.The fact that you're a web designer makes sense. Belive it or not I build the odd website including my own business and personal sites.I have just begun to get the hang of CSS. Hard to believe I find this online editing so hard to figure out! I had been dwelling on submitting another article on some subject that interests me and when I was looking at your interests I was intrigued to see quite a few that also interest me. Non-fiction (I seldom read fiction), History ..personally the history of the Near East / Art .. started out in Art school and still paint although it's not how I make a living / Flying..well you'll know about that Lancaster bomber that's just been rebuilt. (My father flew in WW11 and his brother in the 1st war in the RFC. Flying's in the family blood and I am currently training for my private Pilot's license.. will be aloft on Sunday)Biking . I have recently taken up mountainbiking.. great fun.

If I learn how to do it, I'll make a user page for myself that has a tad more than my name on it. I'm going to have a look at your tips and links.

Anyway .. back to GiveWay. They are brilliant girls. Two of them attend The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. The other two are just finishing highers and will leave school this summer.Fairport Convention are having them at their Cropredy festival in August and they've been back and for the across the channel to European festivals over the last month, most recently in Belgium.

Well, I gave into temptation, as you would see if you looked at my history. But any contribution I make is an addition to the body of knowledge.

You said you wanted to see my original article entitled "AM Only". As you suggested, I started the page User:Vchimpanzee/Draft articles and, since I was lucky enough to see the warning before it was deleted, I emailed the article to myself and I copied and pasted it there. I had to do some work to get the links to work because somehow emails include carriage returns that I didn't ask for. And that messes up the links.

I did see a less stern warning about advertising. I was thinking that's what I should have gotten. Once again, I didn't even consider the possibility that they could call it advertising if I used the business slogans that I intended as evidence of the nature of the business. Thank you so much for offering to help me with my new article. I have arrived at the point where I need to work on my citations.

I am writing about a local California State Senator and I have looked at other articles about California State Senators for guidance on citations. Some of these have lots of information but no footnotes only external links.

I used 3 main sources for my article, the Orange County Register newspaper, the Los Angeles Times newspaper and the State Senate web site.

Do all references need to link to the actual article because some of my sources are from 10 years ago and I don't know if they are easily available on line.

You are absolutely right, those are the changes I would like to make--the initial caps on all the words and the accent on the e. If you could do that, I would be eternally grateful!

Just curious--when I initially did the search on that article name, I carelessly ignored things like caps because I knew they weren't important to the search. So it seems like then when I clicked on "start new article" I got the title exactly the way I did the search. For future reference, was there somewhere along the way where I could have adjusted the article title to be exactly the way I wanted it before I posted it?

I have looked through other Wikipedia dance references and found that the names of dances are not capitalized, at least at the broadest level where they refer to a class of dances--for example, see entries for "waltz" and "tango." Even when made particular to a subclass the stay lower case, for example "Finnish tango" or Viennese waltz". Only when unique dance is named is the word capitalized, for example "Eva's Waltz" as the name of a specific tune or a specific choreography.

But that is a minor quibble. I have also now figured out how to use RFF and reviewed your comments there. I see I have my work cut out for me. I accept the charge!Cpgruber 16:20, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, welcome to the wonderful world of Wikipedia edit wars! If there is one thing that can be guaranteed, it is that you will at some point come up against someone who disregards guidelines/consensus/etc. and will not be reasonable about it. Fortunately, there are steps beyond 3O, such as Requests for comment and, if things get really bad, mediation (not there yet, thankfully!) One thing that you always have to bear in mind, of course, is that any consensus or impartial opinion may not favour your point of view. Although, in this case, I would say that you are correct. After all, if a debatable or controversial fact cannot be reliably verified, it shouldn't be there. I'll probably leave some comments on the talk page of that article a bit later on. Yeah, no problem.
If you haven't already found it, see WP:FN, which tells you how to create references in the footnote style. Basically, each reference will be placed between ref tags – <ref> and </ref> – directly after a punctuation mark, before the space. They can be placed mid-sentence if the citation specifically refers to that part of the sentence and not the next part. If you are making refs for existing material, then I guess it either has no inline refs at all or has the basic URL style, like this.[1] Converting those is quite easy. Get as much info as you need from the source (website name, title of article, etc.) and change the [http://www.example.org] into [http://www.example.org Title of article] ''example.org'', retrieved on [[May 22]] [[2007]]. See the next bit for more about that.

For each type of reference, there is usually a slightly different approach to layout, and WP:CITET can help with this. I won't suggest that you use the templates that you'll see on that page, because they are not mandatory and actually create more work for the editor in typing or pasting. But the examples are good for showing how to structure a ref and what information it should contain (assuming that it's available). The most important/useful layouts are:

Those layouts cover pretty much any source, and there is flexibility about what fields you include (use as many as you have available, basically). There are three ways of displaying the finished refs: The best are {{reflist}} or {{reflist|2}}, which produce a list in a small text size. The "2" version gives two columns, which is not supported by all browsers, but is useful for long lists. The other type is <references/>, which produces full-size text. Dear adrian,

thank you so much for giving me advice as to my entry. I just joined Wiki. In fact i was advised to do so to create the entry Xenovibes. I will read the guidelines once more but hope that the entry will not be deleted before I get to modify it to suit the site. I had a few problems scripting the entry such as how to link internally which I have since worked out. I realised after posting the entry that we could upload images. Still working this out.

Please advise me in a summary why the entry cannot be included. Thanking you in advance!

To be totally honest, your chosen subject may not be suitable for an article at all. Looking at the work-in-progress on your user page (wrong place for it, but I'll cover that in a minute), it is a little confusing as to what it is actually about. It initially appeared to be a neologism, but is actually about a band, is that right? In which case, WP:MUSIC is the most relevant of the specific policies (general policies/guidelines almost always apply).

Your user page is not the place for any kind of article content. That leaves it open to deletion, usually by MFD. If you want to work on draft articles online, do so in a sub-page, instructions for which are at that user page link. Hope that helps. Adrian M. H. 14:51, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Adrian, something weird has happened, there is a The Plague (English punk rock band) page and a The Plague (English Punk Rock Band) page - note that all the words in brackets are in capitals in the second page. I'm not sure how that came about. I was fully expecting to see that someone had set up a redirect to correct for the capitalization ("English punk rock band" is the correct way of naming it) but you actually created both articles, one on the 24th April and the other on the 2nd May. I recognise the one with the capitals as an earlier version of the article. As it's a duplicate, there is nothing to merge, so you can tag it with either {{db-author}} (because you were the only significant contributor) or {{db-reason}}, which has room for a brief explanation of the nomination.
