Gool-hay-yee, Kiowa warrior[edit]

Gool-hay-yee (Everything Red) was a Kiowa war leader killed in a battle with Kit Carson and is buried somewhere in the rocks in the state of Colorado. Gool-hay-yee was taken as a captive at 3 years old as his affuent Spanish family crossed the plains. A Kiowa warrior, Taybodal (Rotten Thigh Meat) took the little 3 year old who was clothed in red velvet clothes on a long journey back to the Kiowa camp. Because of his clothing when he was taken in the raid his boyhood name was called Soft To The Touch. Taybodal or Rotten Thigh Meat told his wife Bo-dal-tadal the son she longed for would become a great warrior because on their journey back to the Kiowa camp the little boy ate a panther heart with zest. He was raised by Rotten Thigh Meat or Taybodal and his brothers who trained him to become one of the greatest warriors. As he rose to prominence as a warrior he was in 3 major battles one of which he never returned. His young warrior name was Young Mustang (T'sein-tawn). It is this young warrior name that Kit Carson called him in his field notes having fought "the greatest light calvary ever" with their leader who wore a red cape. It is during this time that a young woman, Aup'kau-ty the granddaughter of Little Raven, Arapaho was chosen to be his wife. They had two children, Sen'deh-mah (Sindy Keahbone) and Maigote (George Mopope). Sindy Keahbone was a young girl when her father was killed (about 8 yrs of age)in battle and her brother was just a baby. Family history denotes she kept his childhood velvet suit and the scalp of a Blue Coat her father had taken, his Red Cape and Red Sash in a locker until her death. Sindy Keahbone also passed on the stories and battles of her father, told to her by her mother, Aup-kauty and his father, Taybodal. Taybodal grieved his sons death so much he never spoke his name nor shared any information as long as he lived having died at 100 yrs old.

Young Mustang was an audacious and noted young warrior of the Kiowa Tribe. He earned his warrior name in a proof of valor by capturing everything red from a Mexican Officer. To earn this honor he would have to ride in alone and capture the cape. He rode into the garrison of Mexican solders against the opposition of his warriors who did not want to lose their leader. Young Mustang killed the officer with one blow, scattering the garrison of Mexican soldiers. He took everything red. His warrior name became Gool-hay-yee or Everything Red because he took the officers Red Cape and his red sash. Gool-hay-yee wore his cape from then on into every battle.

At the age of 26, this young, Kiowa war leader, Gool-hay-yee was killed in a battle with Kit Carson in Colorado. He was Koit-sein (the Ten Elite) and died staked to the ground. He received a bullet wound to his head, killing him instantly. His men refused to leave his body and wished to take it home to his people. Unable to make such a long journey they buried him in the rocks.

His daughter, Sindy Keahbone was later one of the Kiowas put on the reservation at Ft. Sill. Her husband, Edgar Keahbone was given a 160 acre allotment and they raised their children there until her death. Category:Kiowa tribe Category:Kiowa people
