The rise of the Internet celebrity[edit]

Vidcon, 2017

It is known that 300 hours of video content is uploaded to Youtube everyday, which is 5 billion videos.[1]Individuals nowadays are creating videos, sketches, etc and uploading them onto social media platforms, such as Youtube, in return for disposable income. Internet celebrities have became huge in the last decade. Hollywood has depreciated in value, purely because of the increase in internet celebrities. There was a 15% decline in ticket sales in 2015, compared to the year 2013. [2] Youtube now has 1.5 Billion monthly active users, and the select few famous You tubers have tens of millions of subscribers. [3]Looking at Youtube stars, they appear to have greater influence on todays millennial population, rather than traditional celebrities. One of the main reasons behind this, is that the majority of millennials do not watch TV, they prefer to use their handheld devices, quickly accessing these internet platforms that are full of non-traditional celebrities. [4]Looking at trend settings, 70% of Youtube subscribers say that these celebrities set new trends for the general public. [4] Advertising is a huge factor for internet celebrities, it is what makes up the majority of their income, and has only come into act in the last few years, once the internet celebrity regime grew.

One example of this, are the internet celebrities called Nelk. These individuals made their breakthrough in the industry, by releasing a viral video called Coke Prank on Cops, which currently has 24 million views. [5]Not only this, but from grasping onto their fame, they set up a new clothing/accessory brand called Full Send, meaning that they progressed even further as internet celebrities.[6]
