  • Support – There's no reason not to. As it doesn't require an admin, why don't you just move it? I trust you will take care of the implications. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 05:12, 14 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

template supports "outgoing" interwiki, should it document "incoming"?[edit]

the example describes a situation where some languages have "fib number" (let's call the WD item Q1), and others have "fib sequence" (Q2).

say language A has the Q1, and language B has Q2. in order to "solve" the issue, the template has to be added to both languages - lang A with Q2, and lang B w Q1.

sounds reasonable, but an editor in lang A wants to "solve" it for their language, and create bidirectional interwiki links without having to add this template to all articles in all languages which point to Q2. adding it to lang1 article only adds "outgoing" interwiki links, but not "incoming" (i.e., from articles in other languages to language A).

there is a simple way to create incoming links: create a redirect in lang A (in the example "fib sequence"), and link to to Q2. currently, WD refuses to add redirects as "items" (a controversial decision which i never understood), but this can be easily bypassed: temporarily make the redirect "not redirect", e.g. by removing its content, link it to WD, then restore it as redirect

this switcheroo is basically the "complementary" measure to what this template does - the template takes care of "outgoing" interwiki, and the "trick" i described takes care of incoming.

the question here is, should this be described, explained, and suggested in the template's documentation.
