  •  Reviewing... @Muboshgu: I'll review this. Would you mind first updating the Newspapers.com refs with an actual clipping and including the article title too? Most don't have it. Thanks.—Bagumba (talk) 18:05, 13 April 2022 (UTC)
    • Of course. I always finish off filling out the referencing before it gets to the main page. – Muboshgu (talk) 18:49, 13 April 2022 (UTC)

General: Article is new enough and long enough

Policy compliance:

Hook eligibility:

  • Cited: Yes
  • Interesting: Yes
  • Other problems: No - The source says: ...Dowling began playing semi-professional, and on account of the objection of his parents he adopted the name of R. J. Glenalvin. The hook and WP article imply he needed permission, which is not supported by the source. It only says he changed names because of their unspecificed objection.

QPQ: Done.

Overall: I'll wait for the Newspapers.com clippings to be updated before looking at the sources for close paraphrasing.—Bagumba (talk) 10:27, 14 April 2022 (UTC) —Bagumba (talk) 10:27, 14 April 2022 (UTC)

  • Bagumba, I still have more formatting of the refs to do, but the Newspaper.com sources are all clipped. ALT1 added. – Muboshgu (talk) 18:59, 15 April 2022 (UTC)

@Muboshgu: I have the following comments:

  • His parents objected to him playing professional baseball, and only consented to it if he used an assumed name: Source only says his name change was prompted by their objection. It doesn't say specifically that they objected to baseball or "consented" to him playing. Need to get the article in sync with the source, and then likewise with the hook(s).
  • "Early life": Cited source for birthday says 1868 not 1867.
    • He may have tried to shave a year off of his age. Not uncommon for players of that time. MLB.com and B-Ref say 1867. I took the date out. I'll note that that cited source also calls him "Rodney J. Dowling". – Muboshgu (talk) 19:53, 21 April 2022 (UTC)
  • Assuming he never legally changed his name, it seems Dowling should be the first name in the lead sentence per MOS:LEGALNAME.—Bagumba (talk) 08:59, 19 April 2022 (UTC)

@Muboshgu: Approve Alt1, which is ok with that source. "Refuse" in the main hook seems too controlling, assuming he was an adult, but something along the lines of "object" would be ok, but I think it leaves some intrigue to not mention it. It's up to you if you want to re-propose. I have no strong feelings on the birth year, other than the text was inconsistent with that cited source.—Bagumba (talk) 05:31, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
