1978 Movie Version of The Wiz

The largest on location musical set ever (up to that point) was done in the WTC plaza for the movie version of the Wiz. The towers (as well as several other NYC landmark locations) were used extensively as part of the backdrop to the entire production. There is more & better information on this in the DVD promo and extras section of the DVD version of the Wiz. I am not very experienced with editing this stuff but I feel this should be mentioned in the main page. The Wiz was one of the largest and most expensive NYC movie productions ever.

Futurama?

Anyone have visual evidence of their ruins in Old New York? --Brad Rousse 06:48, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

Not that I'm aware of, however, that brings up another point - technically, the claimed Futurama appearance of the WTC (even in "enhanced/future form") isn't correct. When Fry is in the freezer tube in the pilot episode, it clearly shows a fleet of flying saucers leveling NYC, a subsequent medieval rebuilding, another destruction by a fleet of saucers, and then the construction of the buildings in the Futurama year 3000 setting. Rather than being a throw-away gag, this has actually remained fairly consistent across seasons - Bender is revealed to be the cause of the first fleet (in the year 2308) in Bender's Big Score, and the same sequence of events occurs during time travel in The Late Phillip J Fry (season 5). While the first two only show one perspective (what can be seen from the window of Applied Cryogenics), the last shows the events from a different perspective (the future location of the Planet Express building), so it's reasonable to conclude that all of NYC was destroyed both times (including any version/rebuilding of the WTC). And because a different set of buildings/castles was erected between the first and second saucer fleets, even if there is a superficially similar building in the year 3000, it can't meaningfully be equated to the WTC. should we add "features a replica of the World Trade Center complex in 1978 New York City. The complex is depicted lacking the Marriott World Trade Center hotel, as it was only completed in 1981; the complex also features The Sphere, a 1967 Fritz Koenig sculpture, near the middle of the complex. However, a road cuts through what is supposed to be the center of the complex plaza. Feel free to add, but it would really help if you included a source (such as an article that mentions this). Ultimately, this page needs to be reduced to only what we have sources for. I'm going through the rest of the list items and trying to find sources. After trying, if I (or anyone else) can't find a source for something, then it will be removed from the page. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within

I don't get it.

The 2001 movie "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within", released two months before the attacks, features several scenes of "Old New York" without the Twin Towers.

Since the scenes without the Twin Towers, what's the point of listing this movie here? I mean it's not the NYC in popular culture, right? --Mato Rei 12:01, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

I think what's meant is that the movie takes place in a future where NYC has been destroyed (and it's now called "Old New York") and so the towers were also shown destroyed. That the movie was released before 9/11 could mean that it was almost a "foreshadowing" of what was going to happen. I'm just guessing. Ospinad 21:25, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

Yeah I guess the "foreshadowing" thing is what it's supposed to be, but it shouldn't get through. The movie was made before 9/11 with no Twin Towers in it so it only makes this movie an irrelevant movie. If you say the movie was predicting something then you need to provide the source. There are some missing movies which should be put into the list instead. The Twin Towers was in the opening scene of Léon (film), the opening scene of Entrapment (film) and the ending scene of The Bone Collector. The last two are night scenes so it might be difficult to find them, but the shots have the place where it was.--Mato Rei (talk) 08:16, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

Add to Music Section

There is a photograph on the back cover of hip-hop group Whodini's 1987 album Open Sesame that was taken close to the Brooklyn Bridge. The twin towers are clearly visible in the background. I think this should be added to the music section under "W". Bush Rabbit (talk) 08:13, 26 April 2011 (UTC)

"I know it when I see it". General ideas are: inconsequential, doesn't increase understanding of the subject, etc. I'm still figuring out what precisely to do here, but more trivia isn't acceptable. Months ago, I had started going through and finding sources that talk about the appearance of the WTC and cultural significance, such as a newspaper article. Mere glimpses of the WTC (as happen with most any shot of the NYC skyline) may not be that notable or significant. Other appearances, such as King Kong where there was more than a glimpse and the WTC was a significant aspect of the film, are worth mentioning here. And there are scores of newspaper articles and other sources that talk about the cultural significance. We need to cite those. If there is nothing to cite, then the trivia needs to be removed. Someday, I will be back to this page to go through the entire list, removing stuff that I can't find sources for, and provide sources where possible. But, to be honest, this page is less of a priority than getting the main World Trade Center article and others up to high standards. There's hundreds of movies that are set in New York that show the towers in the background. I removed such reverence here regarding Left Behind (2000) that seems to infer that it has precognition of 9/11. The movie Bicentennial Man is an exception due the deliberate change in the tower's size (and appearance?) in a futuristic skyline.~Technophant (talk) 18:31, 21 October 2014 (UTC)

X-men Comics

Twin towers in "The Survivors"

In the 1983 movie "The Survivors" the towers are visible during the opening sequence.

Death by Design / The Life and Times of Life and Times (1995)

The WTC is in the background of the second documentary (which are both about cell death and structure and the aging process) in a scene which features the Statue of Liberty undergoing renovation in 1984-1986, surrounded by scaffolding. Given that the film uses architectural structures as visual metaphors for cellular structures and processes, I thought this conjunction an eerily appropriate photo bomb. The documentary was directed by Peter Friedman with contributions from the French biologist Jean-François Brunet, so I should be able to scare up enough secondary sources to cite it here. kencf0618 (talk) 02:59, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

Main Movies Section

There are actually very few movies that are ABOUT the World Trade Center. I would suggest keeping the topic of the WTC in Popular Culture and in the Movies section just have a brief paragraph and a link to the List of films featuring the World Trade Center article. (Incidentally, it seems like the list is actually taken from my site wtcinmovies.tripod.com without my permission.) —Wtcinmovies

Movies and dates

I've added the following comment note to the source next to the Date column header:

NOTICE: Please don't change the format of release dates, as with current JavaScript-based sorting, their placement is as good as it can be. Release dates of 2002 films do not have to be exactly sorted, as the idea is to have a cut-off area for which was the last film showing WTC unaware of 9/11 and which followed with awareness of these events. See Talk.

The idea is, that I've added darker borders to some rows to denote the cutoff area, where films in principle were unaware of 9/11, and which was the last such movie premiered to feature WTC towers without awareness of 9/11 reflecting into the film or its production.

"25th Hour" is special, because it is not just aware of 9/11, but also shows the cleanup effort without making 9/11 the primary plot device. AFAIK, it's the only non-documentary film to do that. -Mardus (talk) 16:22, 19 July 2012 (UTC)
