BAIN PRINCIPLE[edit]

Very surprised not to see a section on the Bain Principle, as this is what Bain is most known for in Scotland: a convention or principle in Scottish politics to which Willie Bain gives its name. At 9:52pm on 27 March 2012, Willie Bain, MP, (@Williiam_Bain) tweeted "There is a long-standing PLP convention that we do not support SNP motions. We will oppose the Finance Bill and lay amendments". I don't know if the tweet still exists. This links to a picture of it: http://wingsoverscotland.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/bainprinciple1-460x300.jpg

The "long standing convention" referred to in the tweet is a blanket policy of parliamentary non-cooperation with the Scottish National Party even where Labour's own ideologies and stated manifesto aims or policies actually agree with them.

Not confined to the PLP (parliamentary Labour Party) the principle is that MPs or MSPs of the three main UK parties either abstain from, or vote against, measures they would otherwise support, because the proposal or motion is being made by the SNP. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.151.212.24 (talk) 15:41, 30 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
