Note[edit]

This is a rather nice essay of the "compare and contrast variety", but not a very good encyclopedia article. As a wikipedia article, is should stick more to concrete facts, than analysing abstract concerts. Since there is already a good entry on the Puccini opera, the focus on the article should perhaps be the Schiller play, or if the story has a basis previous to Schiller, on the legend of Turandot, and how it developed previously to Puccini. Info in the article might include:

  • Schiller's inspiration for the play
  • Info about the premiere of the play
  • The structure (e.g. # of acts), characters, brief plot summary
  • If the article does focus on more than just the Schiller play, other Turandot's in music (Carl Maria von Weber and Hindemith).

As for the current article (which is quite good), maybe it should be condensed, or separated into another article about the character of Turandot.

Schiller vs Puccini[edit]

AS long as the article is contrasting the Gozzi and Schiller version, shouldn't it go on and contrast the Schiller and Puccini versions? Joseph Kerman in OPERA AS DRAMA criticized the finale as "a happy ending for the two characters who least deserve it", which certainly doesn't match Schiller's point of view as described in this article. Edited to nothing[edit]

Seems like the "essay" was edited to nothing. It's now a stub, and one paragraph doesn't even make grammatical sense. Whatever this used to be was probably better than what remains. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 168.38.111.142 (talk) 08:35, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Romantic prinicples[edit]

I'm slightly confused by the hyperlink to universalism, which seems to me not to be the same universalism at all: the author seems to write about dramatic universalism (whatever that may be), but the linked article is on moral universalism. Katiehawks (talk) 05:37, 31 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Summary of play missing from article?[edit]

Why is even a basic summary of the play lacking in this article? That doesn't seem very useful to anyone. Please correct! 173.89.236.187 (talk) 00:02, 31 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Seconded. (Edit: this is not, for opera fans, necessarily a “low-importance” article :))ELSchissel (talk) 00:32, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
