Secession efforts

I question the role that Guiliani played in why secession died. Staten Island residents voted 2-1 in favor of secession in November of 2003. However, the New York Legislature decided that secession could not occur without the consent of New York City because of home rule in the state, and court challenges to that legislative determination were rejected in 1996. Local Government Law, 3rd ed., pp. 412-13. Gerald E. Frug, et al. West Publishing Co., 2001. Is there a source somewhere that says that independent of this legal setback, popular support of secession actually waned because of Guiliani? Regardless, the legal information needs to be included. Postdlf 20:24, 5 Apr 2005 (UTC)

  • The vote wasn't in November 2003, it was in the early ninties (unless there's been another one I'm unaware of). You are definitely right about the legal issues though; please include it in that section. I think the issue has died down both because of the legal impractibility and the greater satisfaction of Staten Islanders with the state of City Hall and the city in general. I have seen absolutely no evidence of a Staten Island secession movement in the last few years.--Pharos 18:20, 20 July 2005 (UTC)

Disambiguation

Does Staten Island really need a dab page? There are only two links there, and Staten Island, New York redirects to this page. Would it be more appropriate to eliminate the dab page and put this at the top of the page?

See Isla de los Estados (Staten Island) for the island off the coast of Tierra del Fuego in Argentina.

Famous Staten Islanders? &/or Staten Island in Popular Culture?

Instead of including the reference to the Wu Tang Clan in the opening description of Staten Island, should there be an article on famous Staten Islanders and/or another article on references in pop culture? Famous SI'ers in entertainment would include: David Johanson, aka Buster Poindexter, singer with the proto-punk band New York Dolls and later known for pop songs like "Hot, Hot, Hot" / Wu Tang Clan, mentioned above / Christina Aguellera (sp?) singer. References in pop culture would also include the fact that SI is featured prominently in the works of author/playwright Paul Zindel (The Pigman, The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds...). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.63.16.200 (talkcontribs) 14:43, 17 November 2005 Films shot on Staten Island include Working Girl, Splendor in the Grass, The Godfather, Easy Money... "The Sticks"

In these cases, the Island is oftern referred to as "The Sticks," for the reeds common in wetland areas before the Island became built-up residentally.

Can anyone cite a source for this? "The sticks" was often used as a reference by "sophisticated people" to less urban domains, and I doubt it had anything to do with wetlands. In Manhattan of the 1960s and 1970s I know it often was applied to anyplace rural or undeveloped. RossPatterson 23:46, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

I stand corrected. I've removed the reference to reeds. But I'd feel more comfortable if there was a way to point out that the term was applied to SI when it was much less developed and than it is today. And there is virtually no longer any "rural" presence on the Island outside of protected parklands or properties owned by the SI Historical Society. EGregory 21:26, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

When I lived nearby about 30 years ago, that was all just called Todt Hill, mostly by folks who wished they had some of the pricier properties further up on the ridge. I see that the Meiers Corners article claims the region as well, although we never called it that. Susan Wagner HS occupies a large chunk of the area. RossPatterson 03:57, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

Staten Islander commenting

I'm from Staten Island, and I say that this is a nice article. Tractor Photo?

Why is there a photo of a tractor near the notable residents section of this article? Is it a photo of the former landfill? If so, it should be identified, and should be near discussion of the landfill, not where it is now. Even if it is, it doesn't add much. There is a page on the former landfill, perhaps it belongs there instead. Digit LeBoid 16:16, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

I believe the house you are referring to is the Julia Gardiner Tyler House at 27 Tyler Street. Julia, first lady to President John Tyler, was given the house by her parents. However, she did not move into the house until 1868, after her husband's death. This is also after Lincoln's death, so it is not likely that Lincoln would have visited her there. Most remote borough of New York City. Remote from where?

most remote borough of New York City

According to which criteria? Sure, S.I. is the borough most remote from Manhattan, but it is less remote from the U.S. mainland than Brooklyn, e.g. --ThorstenNY 03:05, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

It can be argued that it is more remote than the other boroughs are from each other -- five miles or so from Lower Manhattan and about a mile from Brooklyn. The other boroughs are relatively close to each other. Brooklyn and Manhattan or Manhattan and Queens are much closer to each other than Brooklyn and Staten Island. Brooklyn and Queens touch each other. And, technically speaking, Manhattan (NY County) and The Bronx actualy touch each other at Marble Hill (a small community across the Harlem River from the rest of Manhattan). Very few accurate photos!

Why are all the photos of streets that look like they border forests? There are very few streets on SI that look like this, to be fair. Someone ought to include images of a typical street, (townhouses, anyone?) As well as of many of the old beautiful houses on the North Shore. Or perhaps some of the commercial hubs - Forest Avenue comes to mind. The images are very misleading.

I added better, more accurate photos. Some of those photos looked like there was a dark gloomy cloud overhead. Like smog in LA. Those were weird. I have never seen that on SI. I think they were just bad pictures. And the nature picture was of a highway-like road? Fixed it. Cheers,Hannahgoldstein (talk) 07:15, 21 December 2007 (UTC)Hannah Goldstein (Dec 21, 07)

Many of the photos on this page should be moved or replaced because a lot of them just don't seem to belong where there are. Why is there a photo of the bridge under the "Government" section, or the photo of the beach in the "Sports" section? Agreed. I removed the irrelevant images.--DLandTALK 01:08, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

There "should be moved or replaced" but not removed! The photo show not only beauty of Staten Island. Who cleans beaches? Who will organise rest zones? Who allocates money for island wildlife management? Who cares of cleaning of a paper, a food waste and the bottles left on a beach you? For you is necessary to think before to undertake any actions. We people, instead of animals who suffice, tear, spoil and destroy everything, that will see. --24.168.39.49 22:59, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

This is an encyclopedia article, not a pamphlet advocating clean beaches. The picture of the beach, along with the others, have no direct bearing on the article. The picture of the bridge has nothing to do with Government, the picture of the beach has nothing to do with sports, and the picture of the shopping area has nothing to do with education! What you can do is add a link to Category:Staten Island at Wikimedia Commons - where the pictures belong.--DLandTALK 00:15, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

I added museums, theater, attractions and fine art. I will keep adding to this section. Yes, it was too focused on pop culture. It still has a lot of that but I wanted to improve it not delete too much. Hannahgoldstein (talk) 07:15, 21 December 2007 (UTC)Hannah G, Dec 21, 07

Congratulations Hannah, the culture section is much more rounded now. It would be great if someone could get some info together on the Hudson River School's representation on the island. Film, Music, Television Fluff

The film, music, and television subheadings of "Culture" look almost entirely non-notable and completely unlike the facts reported in most other articles. I began to delete the more obviously tangential cultural references, but would like some input as to whether or not this is best. These do seem to be factual statements, and I would hate to 'streamline' out someone's hard work unless necessary. Ipsenaut (talk) 00:02, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

AC?

An unregistered (IP) user recently added the words I've put into bold italics below to the Music section. I have no way of judging AC, because I don't follow Hip-Hop, but AC is not a band assembled on S.I. like White Lion and the Wu-Tang Clan, while the reference to Yael Naim and the MacBook commercial have almost zilch to do with Staten Island (is it worth relegating them to footnotes?) Is there anything worth keeping, or (without the slightest desire to wound anyone's feelings) should someone just delete the whole addition? Is there somewhere else this infrequent editor (only two other articles edited in his or her 2-year history) can put AC if AC's relevant to some other topic?

The heavy metal band White Lion and the hiphop-collective Wu-Tang Clan both formed on Staten Island, as well as the Up & Coming Hip Hop Artist AC, who was recently noted for his 2008 Music Video for his hit record "New Soul", which features samples from Yael Naim. The Israeli-French singer-songwriter's renderation was featured in the 'Macbook Air' commerical for Apple Computers.

—— Shakescene (talk) 06:35, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

Everyone in the section is only there for being Islanders; none for work done on the island. Thus, all belong in List of people from Staten Island and none in this article. Jim.henderson (talk) 03:17, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

I don't know the artists and have never been on Staten Island, so I'm not going to delete a whole section myself. But for the same reason, whenever anyone feels justified by his or her own knowledge and/or either an editorial consensus or a lack of dissent to Be Bold and cut, I'm in little position to object. For the sake of the unindoctrinated, non-Wikipedic majority of readers, perhaps there could be a sentence roughly on the lines of "For the many performing artists who live in or have roots in Staten Island (for example Christina Aguilera and the Wu-Tang Clan), please see List of people from Staten Island and Culture of New York City".
On the same lines, although this is an extreme example of a problem on every borough's (and many other places') articles, no outsider learns anything remotely useful from the string of ascending random integers in the sentence about Intermediate Schools (in fact I've already shortened it by eliminating all the previous reiterations of "I.S" in "I.S. 2, I.S. 7, I.S. 24, I.S. 27, I.S. 34, I.S. 49, ..."). To people who attended or live near (for example) I.S. 2, it holds a lot of meaning, but partly because (for better or worse) current Wikipedia policy on notability generally excludes separate articles on individual middle schools, it's currently meaningless to anyone else. Should the sentence just say "There are x public intermediate schools" and perhaps add "including Berta A. Dreyfus Intermediate School 49" (which does have its own article)? —— Shakescene (talk) 07:22, 18 October 2008 (UTC)
Good work. These IS lists make sense in neighborhood articles, being neighborhood schools unlike HSes which serve the whole island (and the Ferry carries some highschoolers every day). Yes, many local articles are written by mostly homeboys, and mostly with their neighbors in mind, which detracts from broader usefulness. This lack of perspective is why I stay away from saying much in articles about my home neighborhood even when I see flaws. As for SI, I visited several times this year, as I visit all nearby counties every year, and took many of the photos you see in articls about Island neighborhoods, roads, parks and other topics, though none are in this article. Fixing wording on Jewish American percentage in Staten Island

The Jewish community is large enough that it would be significant in most other parts of the country, but it is relatively small compared to other parts of the New York Metropolitan Area.

I feel the wording is poor. Most sources I've read claim the New York City area to be ~9-10% Jewish. Staten Island is about 7%. I wouldn't say that is relatively small. New York City as a whole is ~10-11% which is relatively similar. While it is less, I wouldn't call it relatively small. I will change the wording to slightly less. Deleting uncited quotes

Except for the areas along the harbor, however, the borough remained relatively undeveloped until the building of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in 1964, which opened up the island to explosive suburban development by giving it direct road access to Brooklyn.

Firstly, I'd like to see citation to this quote. While many of the inland parts Staten Island weren't as developed prior to 1964, it still had populations in neighborhoods such as New Dorp, Todt Hill and Westerleigh. Staten Island had about 222,000 people in 1960, four years prior to the bridge being accessible. A lot of the newly populated inner parts of the island had been done so during the baby boom suburbanization era which the rest of the country had been experiencing postwar.

Having direct road access wouldn't have necessarily been ground breaking because it didn't require Brooklyn to commute to Manhattan. The Staten Island Ferry has been existing for a while, the bridges connecting to New Jersey were in use decades prior and there were even ferries that would have brought you to Brooklyn if you wanted to take a subway. I will be deleting the quote until it is cited. TomNyj0127 (talk) 22:13, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

This road expansion was planned initially by Robert Moses.

This quote also needs citation. While I'm aware he involved with much of the new construction at the time, there is no citation directly claiming he was responsible for that. TomNyj0127 (talk) 22:13, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

A subsequent plan to use the site as a movie studio headed by actor and New York native Danny Aiello faltered due to money problems.

This quote seems useless. It doesn't seem that relevant to what is militarily being spoken of. Especially since the plan never went through. It also has no citation. TomNyj0127 (talk) 22:13, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

Panoramic view of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, which connected the eastern portion of the island to Brooklyn and accelerated a new era of development

Off the island, most New Yorkers had no idea it was ever called Richmond County, any more than they knew that Brooklyn was Kings County. On the island, there had been a huge influx of new residents after the Verazzano bridge opened, and they didn't know either. It was just a modernization. A lot of us who were old island families regarded it as yet another indication that things were changing faster than we liked. RossPatterson 23:19, 26 May 2006 (UTC)
I believe this had something to do with the citywide celebration of the 350th anniversary of the founding of New Amsterdam that year. "Staten Island" is of course the old Dutch name, though it wasn't officially used till 1975.--Pharos 08:48, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
That's entirely possible. The name change would have required an act of the New York City Council, so the motivation should be on record with lots of "whereas this and whereas that" language. I'd look it up, but I don't live in town any more and the Council doesn't have anything online before 1990.
Just as a reminder to future readers, what Pharos means is that Staten Island wasn't officially used as the name of the borough until 1975 (and of course has never been the name of the county). The island has been named Staten Island for hundreds of years. RossPatterson 00:27, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

A line at the start needs to be reworded

The North Shore, especially the neighborhoods of St. George, Tompkinsville, Park Hill; Stapleton is the most urban part of the island; it contains the officially designated St. George Historic District and The St. Paul’s Avenue-Stapleton Heights Historic District, which feature large Victorian homes.

Is it just me, or does the sentence sort of start by saying something about multiple neighbourhoods, only to become about just one neighbourhood without explanation? I don't know a great deal about Staten Island so am not the best to edit this, but if anyone can fix this sentence up it would be good. Anoldtreeok (talk) 01:41, 21 September 2010 (UTC)

The Staten Island Ferry

The Staten Island Ferry is undergoing major renovations partly due to the major ferry crash that happened less than 5 years ago. This is not stated at all in the article and was headline news for the Staten Island community.

Help Streamlining Neighborhood Pages

Would anyone like to help me with streamlining the pages for the Staten Island neighborhoods? I've recently done some work on the Stapleton page, but have noticed a huge lack of uniformity between the different neighborhood pages, and a tragic dearth of citations. I'd like to come up with a standardized format that can be applied to each neighborhood page, which is fluid enough to allow for variability, but standard enough so that, going from page to page, one can easily find information of a given type in a certain area. For example, some pages list bus connections in the introductory paragraph; others have their own section for transit.

I was thinking the pages could all contain sections on History, Transportation, and Culture, with unique sections (e.g. Public Libraries, Education, Economy, and Notable Residents), if existent, following those three. So let's put together a finalized rubric here and then go about and apply it until all of the pages are relatively uniform. Until anyone replies with suggestions, I'm going to operate under the guidelines outlined above. A copy of these guidelines will appear on my User Page. --Joseph.pentangelo (talk) 07:20, 6 September 2012 (UTC)

Democratic (fake?) majority in Staten Island

The politics section of the article shows an interesting paradow about SI voters : they are mainly registered as Democrats, bu vote mainly Republican. I think the explanation is that SI is part of NYC, where the traditional american two-party system doesn't exist : Exept for SI legislative seats and borough president, the only competitive election is always the democratic primary. As a way of consequence, we can state that many swing and republican voters actually register themselves as Democratic, in order to vote in these primaries.

Does somebody disagree ?--Revas 22:16, 12 August 2005 (UTC)

Democrate or Republican, SI'ers tend to be a conservative bunch. None-the-less, the stats in this article acknowledge that in the last four presidential elecitons, they've voted for Democratic and Republican candidates equally. In local elections, they vote for whomever performs for Staten Island. Fact is, Staten Islanders felt shut out of City politics for most of our history as New Yorkers. And when New York was financially in the hole, SI'ers felt particularly ignored -- hence the secession movement. And right or wrong, Staten Islanders really felt that the Dinkins Administration did nothing for SI. The Guiliani camp successfully capitolized on this, and so has the Bloomberg administration. (ie: closing the dump, new ferries and terminals, elimiation of 2-fare zones and ferry fare...) Check out the local council races, and you'll see that the North Shore votes consitantly Democratic and the South Shore consistantly Republican. A relatively even distribution of Dems/Reps and a willingness to vote across lines creates the disconnect that you are referring to. Also, do you really think enough voters are willing to register outside their party? Most parties want the "A" column on the ballot and the numbers to show their support. For so many voters to register outside their party would take a concious conspiracy of massive proportions that would be pretty tough to hide, and probably wouldn't be all that effective.EGregory 15:31, 14 November 2005 (UTC)

Why New York and not New Jersey

This article suggests that the "race around the island" setting it as art of NY vs. NJ is a rumor, yet fails to illustrate how this did actually occur. The following (extensive) account suggests otherwise. http://www.statenislandhistorian.com/Images/digital_books/How_New_York_Acquired_Staten_Island.pdf

Why is that part even in the article? I'm pretty sure it is an advertisement to to whatever it is. Chard513 (talk) 23:35, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

I agree with Chard513. The entry reads like an advertisement and includes directions to the CPG offices. Also, when the entry was added to this entry, it replaced the Media Topic as section 8. This should be reviewed and rectified by an experienced editor please. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.9.88.75 (talk) 22:52, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

Borough president, borough of Richmond

Under "borough president", the infobox says: "James Oddo (R) — (Borough of Richmond)"

Why "Borough of Richmond", when the text says that that name has been abandoned? Marnanel (talk) 21:53, 24 April 2014 (UTC)

Native Name Staaten Eylandt or Staateneiland

The history part of the document state that the native name in Dutch is "Staaten Eylandt". [1]

Why would we use a banal translation of "Staten Island" to dutch instead of the real native name ... ?

Is there any good reason for keeping this translation ? I recommand to use "Staaten Eylandt" and simply quote the part explaining where it come from to avoid people editing it back to a simple translation.

Unless I'm missing something and "Staateneiland" is the real native name ? Then the history part is wrong ?

Forgotten Borough

Should this comment be included? The attached reference where the NY Times calls it the forgotten borough doesn't prove that the people actually refer to it as the forgotten borough. Also, it sounds a bit biased. Ranever (talk) 02:17, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

@Ranever I know this comment was made in 2008 but I just joined recently and thought I'd answer. I live on Staten Island and we definitely call ourselves the forgotten borough. We even go so far as to say "Heading to the city" as if it were a separate entity when commuting to Manhattan. TMazzio (talk) 15:04, 27 August 2015 (UTC)

I realise I'm responding to an IP from eight years ago, but the current picture is a shot of a destroyer going underneath a bridge. It's a great shot - of a destroyer going underneath a bridge. Staten Island is just visible in the distance. Does Staten Island have a notable visual landmark? Or is it just swamp and scrubland? -Ashley Pomeroy (talk) 20:09, 23 October 2016 (UTC)

Etymology

The origin of the name is mentioned down in the article, should it be explained in the beginning overview just after the written name (like many other articles do?) --d-axel (talk) 20:09, 12 February 2019 (UTC)

I don't think that's necessary. The lead is already long. Station1 (talk) 22:25, 12 February 2019 (UTC)
