OK, it was I, User:Ojw. I've been formatting a few category:Lists of software recently; a few of them linked to QuickBooks, so I thought it should at least have a stub (both redirect suggestions would have been to pages which link here!)
I've never used QuickBooks, which is why it's still a stub rather than a real article. Apparently it's commercial/propietary, which means I can't just install it to play, either... However, if it's "the most commonly used small-business accounting and management software software in the US" as the Intuit, Inc. article says, then hundreds of Wikipedians must have used it, and we just need to persuade someone to write. I am an active user of Quickbooks, however, the task of writing this is so daunting due to its vast size. Can someone set up an outline of sub-headings for software? I am also a user of Quickbooks. I am currently taking a certification through a County College in my area. Right now Quickbooks has a "QuickBooks Certified User Program" [1], where you can sign up to become a Beta Participant and get Certified through Quickbooks itself. I haven't done this yet, although I plan to. My brother took it and you mostly watch chapters through videos to learn. Afterwards, you take tests on what you watched. The videos aren't very long, so it's easy to do when you have spare time.
You may also download a free trial [2] of Quickbooks to play around with. You can try almost every version. I personally downloaded the Simple Start Free Edition, where the catch is that you may only have a certain number of customers, employees, and vendors. There is no time limit, however, so all in all it's a decent trial since you can play around with a lot of the features. Other free trials, like the Online one, have a time limit.
I use to use Quickbooks back in high school for my father's company and just started working for an Accountant who needs help using the program. My brother is a Quickbooks consultant and has experience in almost every version, including the Online one. Also, the film company he uses it for is not really considered a small business, so I wouldn't agree with the article that it is for only small business. Anyway, I would love to help with this but I have little experience on Wiki, especially contributing. I've mostly just used it for, well, my own needs. I could provide information, but wouldn't be sure how to set up it? I *could* probably learn if I felt like it, however that takes a lot of time and just organizing the information would be quite a task. I am not even sure how to go about it even if I wanted to try? Restructuring[edit]

I agree that the Pros & Cons arrangement isn't the best. Perhaps we could outline the various menus of QB and fill in w/content: Vendors, Customers, Banking, Reports, etc.

Two other ideas:

-discuss the different versions of QB - Pro, Premier, Online, and Enterprise
-discuss the industry specific versions of QB Premier: Retail, Manufacturer/Wholesale, Contractor, etc. Jennifer Thieme 06:51, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]


I used the Adobe Illustrator entry as a template for this QuickBooks entry, adding in considerable informaiton to flesh it out. I need to find some additional attributions, but I think we've got a good base for this entry now. Quickbooks has 2 types of desktop versions, its Pro / Premier and Enterprise Solutions. Functions are not much different although some functions that are not available in Pro are available in Premier and functions that are not available in Premier are available in Enterprise, the major difference between Quickbooks Pro / Premier and Enterprise versions are the list limits. This consists of the Chart of Accounts, Items list, Names list which is a combination of the Customer, Vendor, Employee and Other names list. Used to suppor Enterprise version as a Support Engineer for Quickbooks Enterprise since its 6.0 release so I'm much more adept with 6.0 and up versions. Things I hate about the 2009 or 9.0 version? Although its still on its early stage, improvements can be expected (I hope).

-The new online banking feature (GUI)
-The new multicurrency feature
-The new Intuit Suite feature

Why? Because:

-I doubled the data entry, instead of just typing the first 2 digits/letters of the account now you'd need to click the name of the account from the drop-down arrow. after the matching process in prior versions all you need to do is add one to register where you can assign a specific alias for the transactions (Accounts payable / Accounts receivable) and most of the Financial Institutions haven't configured their servers to work with Quickbooks Enterprise 9.0 or evern Pro/Premier Versions.
-You would always need to download current exchange rates in order for this function to work properly otherwise if you processed any transactions with multi-currency settings on and you made a mistake then the only salvation would be a prior backup.
-Most of the Intuit Suite applications are web-based that is slowed on production, it integrates with the data file for good and if there's anything wrong with their server of the data then you will not be able to do anything.

Add-On Software?[edit]

The add-on software section invites spam. When I updated the page with QuickBooks Online info, I added a couple of examples to the add-on section to be consistent with what is there already. I agree, and it's only getting worse. Perhaps eliminating specific examples and just describing the developer's network and the sorts of add-ons there are (in a generic way) is good enough, and then vigilantly removing any specific add-ons that, um, add themselves on to this page. --Bdoserror (talk) 20:27, 27 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I found this website (Right Networks) that has a lot of information on QuickBooks Hosting, and they're apparently Intuit Exclusive Provider for QuickBooks Hosting (Seen on Intuits Website Here). I'm kind of new to editing would this be a worth-while source to quote in the Wikipedia article? Let me know and I'll do the work.

Regarding Johnuniq undoing revision 463443406 and requesting explanation

According to external guidelines: Some acceptable links include those that contain further research that is accurate and on-topic, information that could not be added to the article for reasons such as copyright or amount of detail, or other meaningful, relevant content that is not suitable for inclusion in an article for reasons unrelated to its accuracy.

Obviously, many people who are researching this software would like to know how it actually gets used but I'm possibly missing something. How is this study on the usage of this relatively complex software not relevant to the understanding of the software?

QuickBooks on MacOS[edit]

The article does not mention something that I feel was pretty significant in the history of QuickBooks.

(Note that this is all from my memory. I may have many of the dates and facts wrong.)

Sometime during 2000 or early 2001, intuit announced that they would be discontinuing both QuickBooks and QuickBooks Pro for MacOS. [Similarly, intuit had earlier announced intention to discontinue Quicken for MacOS--a decision that they soon reversed without ever interrupting production. Reports at the time noted that the Quicken reversal came just a couple days after a private meeting in Cupertino at which Apple supposedly showed a team from intuit a preview of some of the innovations coming soon to the Mac platform.]

Maybe I'm misremembering what happened. Maybe it was only the payroll functionality that they were discontinuing on the Mac editions of QB. I recall that they sent us a complimentary copy of Aatrix TopPay, a standalone payroll application that could be used (with a lot of transferring hassles) alongside QB. But, regardless of whether they discontinued QB on Mac altogether or just the payroll support, the decision forced a large number of businesses either to abandon Macs or to abandon intuit. (For many users, integrated payroll was the only reason they had chosen QB instead of some other General Ledger software in the first place.)

Support for Mac editions of QB ceased in 2001. If I recall correctly, QBPro Mac-edition users were offered QBPremier for Windows at the QBPro price as an apology.

A few years later, intuit re-introduced QB on the Mac, this time with no integrated payroll support. (Again, I could be wrong. Maybe that basic edition without payroll functionality never went out of production.) Currently, however, I think the Mac edition permits using the online assisted payroll processing through intuit, but, unlike with desktop payroll, users cannot process and edit payroll themselves from within QB. Neutrality[edit]

The criticisms section is almost the size of the rest of the article put together, which is usually a sign of a less-than-neutral article (especially for such a well-known subject).
