Disestablished VF squadrons section[edit]

I replaced the entire section with a new table, but did not eliminate any of the previously existing information. I added information to the section opening describing the evolution of the designation system with regard to the VF designation and replaced the table with an expanded one listing detailed squadron lineage information and aircraft assignment along with notes regarding the re-use of some of the more famous squadron insignias and nicknames.Navalaviator84 (talk) 21:08, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

VF squadron designations are very complex to display because of the length of time the designation was in existence and the fact that it overlapped EIGHT different "designation" time periods. The squadron designation system was changed or "reset" during each of those eight periods which resulted in the re-use over and over again of many of the same designations. Those eight different designation periods were:

  1. 23 Sep 1921 to 1 July 1922, the period before the advent of carrier aviation.
  2. 1 July 1922 to 1 July 1927, the developmental years of aircraft carrier operations aboard USS Langley (CV 1).
  3. 1 July 1927 to 1 July 1937, the early years of aircraft carrier operations aboard USS Langley (CV 1), USS Lexington (CV 2), USS Saratoga (CV 3) and USS Ranger (CV 4).
  4. 1 July 1937 to 1 Mar 1942, the "Ship Named Air Group" period during which squadrons were designated in accordance with the hull number of the Aircraft Carrier from which they operated.
  5. 1 Mar 1942 to 15 Nov 1946, the "Numbered CVG" period developed in the early years of the U.S Navy's involvement in WWII during which squadrons were designated in accordance with the designation number of the assigned CVG.
  6. 15 Nov 1946 to 1 Sep 1948, the post war period during which the CVG and squadron designation scheme was changed to denote different types of CVGs, squadrons were all redesignated accordingly.
  7. 1 Sep 1948 to approximately 1970, the period during which the CVG (later CVW) designation system was reset eliminating the different types of CVG designations. Squadrons were again redesignated in accordance with the new CVG/CVW designations.
  8. Approximately 1970 to the end of the VF designation in 2006 during which squadron designation were completely divorced from CVW designations.

Simply listing VF designations in sequential order by designation number presents a confusing display of squadron designations with no context with which to understand those designations. Only by subdividing the table to display the designations in the context of the designation period in which they existed can one be afforded the opportunity to "see" the squadrons which carried the VF designation through the history of the VF designation. It is for this reason that I completely revamped the "Disestablished Fighter (VF) squadrons and VF designations no longer in use" section with a new table displaying the VF designations in the designation periods in which they existed.Navalaviator84 (talk) 16:54, 2 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Page size[edit]

I've split off List of inactive United States Navy helicopter squadrons. Please check the lede, "see also" and external links - a bot should fix the broken references shortly.

However this page is still 457,376 bytes, which is too big, and should be split further. How best can that be done? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 23:21, 21 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Duplicate footnotes[edit]

The multiple instances of {{efn|Where not listed in a wikipedia article, aircraft assignment was derived from "http://www.wings-aviation.ch/25-Navy-Sqn/Squadron-Basis-en.htm"}} need to be merged into one. How can that be done? "Wikipedia" should also be capitalised. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 23:29, 21 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

As wikipedia is not an RS, it shouldn't be mentioned at all. so I've started removing such text.GraemeLeggett (talk) 06:46, 31 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
