Update following Category:Worldcon GoH cfd debate[edit]

I created a table to allow inclusion of additional data, including the GoHs, following the debate about the category for Worldcon GoH's. It will take a few days to complete the table contents. VJDocherty 08:08, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The list has now been updated. Many thanks to Wwoods and Shsilver for their invaluable contributions. VJDocherty 16:10, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've replaced all those redirects to stubs. —wwoods 19:49, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Now it behooves us to create articles for all the Worldcon GoHs, TAFF winners, Eastercon GoHs, etc. who don't already have articles! --Orange Mike 22:26, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I tend to agree, (assuming of course that those criteria are sufficient evidence of notability, in Wikipedia terms). Happy to help. I have also tried to clarify the names where they were pointing to the wrong person, plus created a few of the entries already (Weston, Pickersgill, Ford....). VJDocherty 11:00, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The 'missing' names are: Tom Whitmore, Takumi & Sachiko Shibano, Lars-Olov Strandberg, Jack Speer, John Trimble, Bob Passovoy, Bruce Gillespie, Roy Tackett, Les Edwards, Robert Runte, Jon & Joni Stopa, Stranger Club, Roger Sims, Joyce & Ken Slater, Dick Eney, Bruce Pelz, Robert Madle, Jay Kay Klein, Mike Glicksohn, Elliott K Shorter, Walter J. Daugherty, John Berry.
I will create entries for Whitmore, Strandberg, Edwards, Slaters, Pelz, perhaps the Shibanos, but the others I'm not familiar enough with. VJDocherty 11:23, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I would express the opinion that Bjo and John Trimble were invited as GoHs together and could probably be represented with a single link. I'll work on a stub entry for Glicksohn. Avt tor 16:17, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Good idea. I have merged the Trimble entries. Also Passovoys, with same logic. VJDocherty 08:35, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
And I should attempt to get something together for Bruce Gillespie. Perry Middlemiss (talk) 05:06, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Worldcon Names[edit]

In an attempt to maintain the long tradition of fannish nit-picking, I should point out that the 1975 Aussiecon was never called "Aussiecon I", just "Aussiecon". Perry Middlemiss (talk) 05:04, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fan Guest of Honor Bill Bowers, at IguanaCon, 1978 (Page = List of WorldCons)[edit]

I was on the steering committee and a voting member of the committee once we got the bid. Bill Bowers was, indeed, our Fan Guest of Honor, but the internal link you have en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Bowers has nothing to do with the Bill Bowers of fanzine fandom. Bill was never a movie star; he was the editor of Outworlds, and lived for some time in Denver, Colorado. There are only two links I can find to fandom's Bill Bowers. The first is a small SFWA article on his death in 2005 [1], which mentions his being FGoH at IguanaCon; the other is another SFWA link on Bill's TAFF trip in 2001 [2]. Bill was a good friend, and, indeed, was present at our party at MidAmericon when we received the news we'd won the bid. At that very time we asked him to be our FGoH, and he happily accepted.

I've fixed this link by pointing it to "Bill Bowers (science fiction)". That page doesn't exist as yet - maybe you'd like to create one? --Perry Middlemiss (talk) 00:36, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Attendance Worldcon 2017[edit]

At the closing ceremony of Worldcon 2017, it was announced that over 7000 had attended on site, and over 10,000 members had registered. (I didn't write down the exact numbers.) This is a bit more than listed here, but there was an influx of around 1000 signups in the last week, which covers the on-site difference, and these figures seem to be accepted both at the Con and subsequently, so may be updated in due course. Attendees came from all over, but mainly from Finland and Sweden (just next door) This might be compared with Loncon 3, where attendance and registrations were also higher than expected. This may be a pointer for future Worldcons outside North America in locations where access is quite easy from neighbouring countries where fans don't often have the chance to go to a Con of this size. It did take the organisers (and everyone else, as far as I can tell) by surprise. 212.159.59.41 (talk) 12:23, 24 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
