Bilingual name[edit]

This an officially bilingual community where both the Serbian and Hungarian names are used, take a look at the homepage of the village. The Serb name is also used by the Central Statistical Office that proves its official status. What you do in Vojvodina is your business, but leave out Hungarian localities of your game. Two basic points:

1. Wikipedia is not political but scientific project and therefore it is not obligated to follow any official policy of any state including policy of bilingual usage of names and languages. Names of the Wikipedia articles should be those that are most common in English, therefore since this is Wikipedia in English language, we use common English names (not Serbian, Hungarian or Romanian ones). Of course it is fact that English language borrow names from these languages, but once borrowed these names are no longer only Serbian, Hungarian or Romanian, but also English. Proof that I am right is that Wikipedia article about Serbian capital is named Belgrade (which is most common English name) and not Beograd (which is official Serbian name).
2. If you wrotte two bolded names in the first sentence, then please answer this question: did you wrotte here two English names, or you wrotte Hungarian and Serbian name. If you wrotte serbian name, then I have to remind you that primary Serbian script is Cyrillic and if your intention was to writte Serbian name then you have to writte its Cyrillic version too, so following this logic, the correct first sentence would not be in the form "Lórév or Lovra", but in the form "Lórév or Ловра or Lovra" (with Cyrillic name before Latin one). But, since English wikipedia do not use Hungarian or Serbian but English name, we have no reason to writte such sentence. Of course, official status of the Serbian name could be reflected somehow (for example in the infobox), but bolded name in the first sentence should be only common English name. Usage of two bolded names (Hungarian and Serbian) used in the first sentence is not only inappropriate, but also against aesthetical look of the article. PANONIAN 16:33, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There is no English name for the 90 % of Central European localities. In this case wikipedia should reflect the local situation. The local situation is official bilingualism. So both names are English if you like or rather neither of them. Zello 16:40, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cyrillic name is never English - I just wanted to show you how ridiculous usage of Cyrillic name would be, but I did not have idea that you would actually use it in your edit. We trying to writte serious encyclopaedia and we should not play such games with non-English names. Even in the cases of bilingualism, English language pick one of those names as most common and another one only as alternative. But, what ever, if you so much want bolded Serbian name in the first sentence of this article, you can have it, but I will anyway change the sentence to be more in accordance with aesthetics and Wikipedia naming conventions. And by the way, if you do not agree to usage of the name, why you reverted my other edits here including percentual participation of ethnic groups that I added. If you like this version better... The whole English name problem appears only in the case of Belgrade or Beograd not localities without English names. I will maintain the bilingualism of this article as it reflects the official status of names and also reality. Zello 17:13, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
