Projected population growth[edit]

The Northern Illinois Planning Commission estimates that Elwood will have a population of nearly 20,000 by 2030.

As the 2020 census indicated a 2.2 percent population decrease, the above projection now seems to be grossly optimistic.  Also, there is nowhere near enough housing within village boundaries to accommodate such a population growth—with one exception, there are no residential real estate vacancies as I write this.  Given current economic circumstances, new housing construction in Elwood seems to be unlikely to occur anytime soon. Not helping is that commercial development has stagnated, with no new retail operations having opened for several years.

That said, I will reword the above growth estimate statement to indicate the projection was from an earlier time and likely doesn’t reflect reality at this time.
