Distinction between subject and a mailing list[edit]

"In effect, only members of a distribution list can send mails to the list" seems to confuse the subject of the article with a "mailing list". Was there a typo here? My understanding is that a distribution list is just a list of addresses stored for the convenience of one or more users of email client software to enable a user to send mail to all addressees simultaneously. It does not have membership and one addressee cannot see the address of another addressee in order to communicate with them. A "mailing list" is a membership group that a user may join in order to send emails to all other members via a posting address and receive emails similarly sent by other members.AlanS1951 (talk) 21:57, 11 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Everywhere I've worked, a DL is just another term for a mailing list (which may or may not have restrictions on who can send e-mail to it). Obviously that's just anecdotal, but I suspect that's a widespread usage of the term. 91.232.36.10 (talk) 17:21, 24 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
