  • There are two castles in Delvin
  • Both are sometimes called "Delvin Castle"
  • The one in the centre of the town on the Main Street is also called "Nugent Castle"
  • The other one (near the golf course) is also called Clonyn Castle.
  • Delvin is not part of Mullingar
  • Please do not make any edits to this article which confuses this.

Delvin Book Fair[edit]

Delvin has a colourful history and one very colourful part is that of the Brinsley MacNamara affair. For those that may not be aware of what happened, here is a quick synopsis. Brinsley (John Weldon) was born in Delvin and once grown up became a very successful author and playwright. He wrote a novel called, 'The Valley of the Squinting Windows', which deals with rural life in Ireland in the early 1900s. The story revolves around a scandal in the small village of Garadrimna and includes births outside of marriage, forbidden love and of course a murder. This novel is typical of any rural village in Ireland in the early 1900s, however the people of Delvin saw, in the characters represented in the novel, themselves. As this realisation dawned, the locla population became understandbly angry and resulted in a public burning of the book, a court case, threatening behaviour, boycotting and driving the Weldon family from the village. Since then Delvin has always be known as, 'The Valley of the Squinting Windows'.

We are now ninety-two years on and we in Delvin feel it is time to seek reconciliation and because of this we are holding a bookfair in Delvin, Co. Westmeath on Sunday 2 May 2010 between the hours of 12 - 6 pm. There will be in excess of 20,000 books for sale with all paperbacks 50c and all hardbacks €1.00. There will also be a childrens bookfair with character reading. However the main event of the day will be a public reading from the novel that caused all the initial controversy. Celebrity readers will carry out the reading. If you would like to be part of the day why not head towards Delvin on the day. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Murph200 (talkcontribs) 23:33, 21 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
