Clears the long standing confusion amongst history students. Heba Aisha (talk) 01:09, 16 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It still has factual errors. I have mentioned it below and is trying to fix it.--2409:4073:4D83:95F6:E542:3091:4F18:A018 (talk) 06:51, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Factual inaccuracy[edit]

This council thing in Indian history is a confusing part for many. It is visible in this article as well, not to mention it's unsourced. Let me clarify. The Council of India and the Viceroy's Executive Council are two distinct councils. The former was the advisory body of the Secretary of State formed only in 1858 by the GOI Act 1858 and the latter was the advisory body of the Viceroy formed way back in 1773 by the Regulating Act. Viceroy's Executive Council was earlier known as the Council of Four during the time of Governor-General in Bengal. CoI was in London, while the GG/Viceroy and his council was in India. Besides, by the 1861 Act, a new council was established called the Imperial Legislative Council for the purpose of separating the executive (Viceroy's council) and the legislation, the Act also assigned portfolios (like today's ministries) to Viceroy's council members (thus forming a Cabinet). This third council is the predecessor of Indian parliament, it got bicameral system by the 1919 Act—Council of State (upper house) and Central Legislative Assembly (lower house). The CoI was abolished by the 1935 Act and Viceroy's council ceased to exist after independence.--2409:4073:4D83:95F6:E542:3091:4F18:A018 (talk) 06:51, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
