Twin cities - Selective name translations deletion[edit]

I don't understand on what basis User:Toroko deletes all translations other than the Hungarian ones, I would like to point out, that this is English encyclopaedia - there is no legitimate reason for such a selective inclusion/exclusion. The official page of the town also does not count as a reliable source in this regard. (Not to mention that even the official page does not say that ONLY those names are used).

My suggestion would be to remove all the translations and keep the official names only, to keep the article short and readable. But if the Hungarian names have to be included (and that is no problem for me), all the other must be present as well as a matter of simple balance. wlad 12:58, 6 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wlad, Its quite likely that the official names suffice, but considering the Hungarian content, then Hungarian translations appropriate. Further, there is an official city name translation page, but cant remember where. try to link to it.--Petethebeat (talk) 13:00, 7 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hungarian content? I agree that the whole article is about a town in Hungary, but the disputed content is international and the practice to translate names within this section of the article is not usual. But it is not Hungarian article either. Those names are used in Hungary only and can be freely used in Hungarian wikipedia and must mentioned in the articles of the towns, but in here it's misplaced. Moreover - it does not legitimize deletion of the other names. How can you prove that it is not necessary and the names are not used? Tarnowitz is used very often I believe, why should it be deleted from this article? wlad 17:18, 7 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes in fact it is a Hungarian article but in English. IMO any other place names are useless and confusing, but it seems to be the norm on wiki. It would be best if places were referred to only as their current names and if a significant minority exists in the place than its AKA name. Like I said I don't see any reason to delete just that its info overkill, and a bit petty on your part to insist on adding other names under the guise of fairness. --Petethebeat (talk) 20:21, 7 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I came here from WP:3O. The convention is that only the most common name in English should be used, which in almost all cases is the the title of the article that's linked to.
