First World War service

ManxRuler, There is no substantive evidence whatsoever to show that Lt Arne Dagfin Dahl 'fought as young lieutenant in a British unit at the Battle of the Somme in 1916.' Any combatants in the Battle of the Somme would have received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. The medal rolls for the 5 million medal recipients do not contain a card for a man of this name. Given that Dahl joined the Norwegian Army in 1912, there would need to be special dispensation for him to join the armed forces of a foreign nation, and to still remain in the Norwegian Army. It is usually the case that men who serve in a foreign army reliquish their nationality. Please can you explain why you are allowing this non-substantiated claim to continue.GreenwichPensioner (talk) 23:17, 5 May 2011 (UTC)

I'm merely writing what the sources tell me, rather than using Wikipedia as a source, on Wikipedia. In this case I'm writing what the report on the war by the Ministry of Health and Care Services (Norway) says. That's not what I'd call an "non-substantiated claim." I'll grant you that it's unusual during the First World War, although in the late 19th century it was common for Norwegian officers to receive leave from their positions to go as "observers" to wars abroad. Tell you what, instead of replacing a good, government ministry source with a cite to a Wikipedia talk page, the correct thing here is probably to say something in the order of "according to the Norwegian Ministry of Health and Care Services' report Dahl fought, while other sources state he was merely a visiting foreign officers after the battle."
