Coordinators' working group

Hi! Photo Requests

If this project was taken seriously, my request here would at least have received a reply. My request was made four months ago, and so far, no member of this project has added a single photo, and not a single reply was made. I wonder how many people even know of my request! Aside that, no one else has made any photo request; so what's the point of the photo requests anyway, if no one is going to make any request, and if one is made it is ignored altogether? I'm taking the project seriously, the only problem is that too few people do the same. I currently maintain all pages of the project and was busy preparing it all this time. I requested a bot to tag all images related to Egypt with WPEgypt, which didn't leave much time for photo search and license search. Improve this wikiproject

I have improved the interface of this project a lot and am aiming for improving all Egypt related articles. Before that happens I need to organize the Egypt related articles to have an overview.

There are some things we have to do in order to have an easier way of improving the articles.

Please this Project has to start working again.

Request for comment

An RFC is open at this article which is marked as within the scope of this Wikiproject but the RFC has so far seem very few responses. It would be very helpful to resolving the matter if any interested editors could stop by and offer any thoughts.

New articles list

Wouldn't it be good if this project added a subpage for new articles where members could list articles they recently created. That way other members could be aware and help out or collaborate to better the article. --Al Ameer son (talk) 00:57, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

That's a fantastic idea! WP Palestine has that (although it's kind of dead now) and we got a number of articles to GA-class level (Bethlehem, Palestinian fedayeen, Khalil al-Wazir). We don't necessarily have to bring all articles selected to GA class, but we should definitely improve them greatly. --Al Ameer son (talk) 21:24, 12 July 2009 (UTC)
We could also create not yet created articles and improve them to be a reliable source of information. The internet doesn't have nearly enough information to cover Egypt and its history. However the problem for such task forces or weekly collaboration are the involved participants. If enough people are interested I would do the needed measures to create such a project and improve articles under its scope. You bring up a very good point. In the WP Palestine Collaboration of the Week, I had to ask around for help from other project members and and except for Palestinian fedayeen, all the other articles were pretty much edited by a sole editor and so it was not a collaborative effort. It also depends on what articles are suggested. If it's a major subject like an important city, political figure, cultural aspect, or a historic event, more people are likely to actively participate. Another user and I were planning on working on the Gamal Abdel Nasser article (actually I have been wanting to edit this article since early 2008 since I have his biography). I'm sure we could get more editors to work on it also. Then of course there's Asmahan which you and number of other editors are currently working on. It's not really necessary for a "bunch" of users to collaborate on an article, usually the range is 2-4 editors. As for sources, you'd be surprised at the number of online sources available. --Al Ameer son (talk) 02:49, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
I'd be happy to work with you on Nasser to get it possibly to Featured status. The Egyptian Air Force is Featured on the Arabic wiki so it's possible we get it featured here also. Anyway I have about 3 books about Nasser and the Revolution and also later Sadat. I'm struggling with Asmahan there is a big, huge fight about whether she's Syrian or Egyptian. I have to find a compromise somehow which is very hard, as I'm also busy with other articles and contribute a lot to Commons. It's good to hear that you are willing to work on Nasser. I know you're still busy with Asmahan and other articles so we could work on Nasser later in the week. The other editor I had in mind is Nableezy. I'll notify him later today (he's usually busy with I/P-related articles and is working on a future article on the al-Azhar Mosque.) As for me, I'm mostly finished with my work on the Ayyubid dynasty and nominated it for GA. User Arab Cowboy has recently joined WP Egypt and added the Egypt stub, Category:Egyptians of Syrian descent and Category:Druze people of Egyptian nationality to the article, and also WikiProject Egypt to the talkpage.

This is a Syrian clan and I do not believe it is in any way of any interest or has any connection to WP Egypt and I do not believe these two categories should be in the article or the Egypt stub. The Asmahan and Farid al Atrash articles already have these categories, and thats where they belong. The al Atrash clan are not Druze people of Egyptian nationality or Egyptians of Syrian descent. The Al Atrash clan has no connection to Egypt, only Asmahan and Farid. I would like to remove these things from the article and I would like to hear what other WP Egypt members feel about this.--Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 12:01, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

Asmahan and Farid al-Atrash were Egyptian citizens belonging to al-Atrash family. They lived all their lives in Egypt, along with their brother Fuad. Fuad's descendents continue to live in Egypt. As long as users like Supreme Deliciousness keeps inserting "Syrian" in front of those names, WP:Egypt will keep a watchful eye on it. --Arab Cowboy (talk) 13:35, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

Arab Cowboy, the Atrash Family are NOT Egyptian, and i do not think they are to be regarded as Egyptians, as for living all of their lives in Egypt, this is definatly not true, they were born in Syria, Farid al Atrash lived in Lebanon later on, while Asmahan moved to Syria when she got married, so claiming that they are egyptians just becuase they moved to egypt is inaccurate...

But the truth is they were Egyptian citizens and they practically lived all their lives in Egypt and did all their music in Egyptian Arabic. What about Anwar Wagdi, Tamer Hosny, and Soad Hosny, do you find it appropriate that they be labelled of Syrian descent just because they might have had one (of four) Syrian grandfathers? Note: The "labeling" AC is referring to is adding of the category Egyptians of Syrian descent. Tamers mother is Syrian, not one of his grandparents, and in the case of Anwar, the only sources we have say he is of Syrian origin, it might be 100%, 50% or 25%.--Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 12:10, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Do You Agree That These People Were of Syrian Descent?

Do you agree that Anwar Wagdi, Tamer Hosny, Soad Hosny were of Syrian descent? Admin Sancho had stated on Omar Sharif's Talk page that going from both his parents were Syrian or Lebanese to "he was of Syrian descent" would be an unacceptable leap in WP. Let's see what the people in other WikiProjects concerning races have done.. ask a Wikipedian who contributes into Articles concerning Racial descendants & roots if they're considered descendants of a specific race if only one of the grandparents is from it..
My personal opinion is to include only those with at least one direct parent (eg:Father or mother is Syrian, and from Syrian parents).. and anything farther than that should not be considered.. Koraiem (talk) 21:07, 4 September 2009 (UTC)

[User:Sanchom Admin Sancho] has laid The Wikipedia rule on this matter. On Omar Sharif's Talk page, Sancho He has stated: "* SD, avoid original research. The sources cited here and in the article do indicate that Anwar Wagdi has been identified as "Egyptian" by some, "Syrian" by others, or of "Syrian origin". I think its appropriate to mention this in the article and add any relevant categories as well. Tiamuttalk 20:28, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

Amr Mostafa

This article was proposed for deletion. I found what looks like decent coverage of this musician in Arabic, but I don't speak Arabic, and machine translations are a bit dodgy for Arabic. Youssef allam

Hi there! The article Yousseef allam is up for deletion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Youssef allam (by way of background, I am the AfD nominator). The article claims the subject is one of the wealthiest men in Egypt, and founded a very important company in Egypt. No sources were provided except the company's website. A Google search revealed no relevant, third-party sources that supported the claims of notability - hence the deletion nomination.

An anon editor recently said in the discussion that "First of all, i'm from saudi Arabia and have heard many times of Mr. Youssef. He is not known since he tries as best as possible to keep his info from the public, although if you ask anyone in Saudi Arabia or Egypt, he or she wil tell you all about him." Unfortunately, the anon editor did not provide any sources, etc.

I'm just wondering if a) the subject is notable in Egypt (or other nearby Arab countries) and b) if anyone has a third-party reliable source supporting the claim of notability. There are a lot of requested and important articles that we have to create. We must have a work scheme to create these articles within 6 months maximum. i hate seeing all these missing articles, so I will create articles and you should contribute also.

Egyptian Identity

i think since Egyptian Identity is a Very intreaging issue, i think we as an Egyptian Project on wikipedia should settle this once and for all, how to come up with some neutral unbiased form of Egypt's ethnicity, where some Egyptians advocate that their is an ethnic group called Egyptians, while other simply see that Egyptians are Arabs. but to do so, we ALL need to Know what defines an Ethnicity.

Seng Yang: "Ethnic identity is marked in the recognition from others of a group's distinctiveness, and the recognition of common cultural, linguistic, religious, behavioural traits as indicators of contrast to other groups."

Thus making Egyptians, most of them at least, as Arabs, and if you ask an egyptian what's your nationality, he will answer Egyptian, and if you ask him is Egypt an arab country, he will answer yes, and if you ask him what's your language he will answer Arabic, and if you ask him whats the most important thing you care about politically, he will answer Palestine and Jerusalem, and if you ask him what are the porcedures of an Egyptian wedding, he will answer the same answer you would get from a Saudi, Lebanese, Moroccan, or an Iraqi...

i personally am an Arab Egyptian, so to answer that question, their is no Such ethnicity as Egyptian, Egyptian is a Nationality that includes several other ethnicities, given to an Ethnic Nubian, Dom, Arab, Copt, Berber or Beja. sadly most people on Wikipedia dont know what makes an Ethnicity, yet bargain that Egyptians are Pharoas, or simply Egyptians (where being Egyptian is simply a Nationality while ethnicically the majorty f egyptians are Arabs.)

you cant describe an ethnic group in Iran as simply iranian, their are Fars, Lars, Kurds, Arabs, Persians, Pashtuns, Balooch, Turkmen, Armenians, and several other Ethnic Groups. same with Egypt, Egypt has Several Ethnic Groups, Armenians, [[Greeks, Nubians, Arabs, Doms, Berbers, Copts, Beja, Bantu, [[]]Jewish, and other ethnicities, ALL share the "EGYPTIAN" Nationality.
