Is Wikipedia really experiencing an editor retention "problem"?[edit]

Yet another "Wikipedia is dieing" essay that focuses on quantity of editors and neglects to address quality. Yes, we have fewer editors than we once had... but is that really a "problem". Could it be possible that as the quantity of editors shrinks, the quality of our articles is improving?

It may well be that Stack Exchange is "eating our lunch" in terms of the total number of contributing editors it has... but does the superiority in numbers translate to superiority in terms of quality of information? The above points out the fundamental problem with the current essay, and with what appears to be the attitude of the WMF. Wikipedia's actual problem is how to retain good editors who are often swamped by the clueless. Re StackOverflow, I occasionally use SO and have to agree with a very interesting article pointing out its problems (posted by Nettrom at WP:MISC). Johnuniq (talk) 23:36, 13 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
