Well done

Tried this feature out and is a good service. Well done. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thorpe (talkcontribs) 10:28, 23 April 2005 (UTC)

Link?

Where exactly is the "email this user" link? I couldnt see any. Any screenshot? (if possible please reply in my talk page--Nielswik(talk) 16:00, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

Look in the "toolbox" section under the search bar on the left. If the user is email enabled, there will be a link entitled "E-mail this user". It took me a little while to find it, too. -- Satori Son 19:56, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
The link does not appear on any user pages that I have checked today, including my own. Is the feature disabled? --Thomprod (talk) 16:17, 10 January 2009 (UTC)
You don't appear to have confirmed your own e-mail address. You must confirm your e-mail address before you can e-mail others. Cheers. --MZMcBride (talk) 17:34, 10 January 2009 (UTC)
MZMcBride: My address had been confirmed previously in 2006, but had somehow come "undone". I have re-confirmed it and the "e-mail this user" link is now visible. Thanks. --Thomprod (talk) 20:17, 10 January 2009 (UTC)
  • I've seen some users with an amial link in their signatures, but now I can't find any and I can't recall how to write such a link. It isn't user:Will Beback/email, but I recall it's something similar. In addition to answering my own question, we should add it to the project page.   Will Beback  talk  22:34, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
  • Ah, here it is: Special:EmailUser/Will Beback. I'll add a little something to make that clearer.   Will Beback  talk  22:35, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

incorrect message text

This text

"The sender has not been given any information about your e-mail account and you are not required to reply to this e-mail. For further information on privacy, security, and replying, as well as abuse and removal from emailing, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Email."

seems to be incorrect, as the sender's e-mail is revealed currently.

In Preferences it is correctly stated that

"Note that the sender's e-mail address will be visible to the recipient. If you change your e-mail address, you will need to reconfirm it."

--Wikinaut (talk) 08:37, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

Wikinaut, you're onto something important, but you got a detail slightly wrong. The message is accurate in that the sender is not automatically given any information.
The problem with the text above is that the same text is delivered to both the sender and the recipient. So the word "yours" means something different, depending on who's reading the message.
It would be resolved most easily by changing the text to say the following (I made a few additional tweaks):
"The sender has not been given the recipient's email address, or any information about your his/her e-mail account, and you the recipient are not required has no obligation to reply to this e-mail or take any other action that might disclose their identity."

Done Okay, I've fixed this now at MediaWiki:Emailuserfooter. -Pete (talk) 20:53, 3 October 2009 (UTC)

Unidentifiable sender

I am email enabled and have today received a WP email from User:Kings sharpsolar but there is no user with this name on WP as far as I can see.

The usual footer was included with the email: This e-mail was sent by user "Kings sharpsolar" on the English Wikipedia to user "Johnfos". It has been automatically delivered and the Wikimedia Foundation cannot be held responsible for its contents.

Would be grateful for any help in identifying who actually sent the email...

Does my E-mail account work?

Hello. I am not sure if my E-mail account is working. Can you Email yourself? Also, would someone mind Emailing me, just for a test? Thanks, The High Fin Sperm Whale 05:19, 26 January 2010 (UTC)

Sent you a test message. --MZMcBride (talk) 06:22, 26 January 2010 (UTC)
Yep, it works. Thanks. --The High Fin Sperm Whale 19:23, 26 January 2010 (UTC)

Option in My Preferences

There is a box in My Preferences with the following explanation:

- Include my email address when other people are notified of changes I make.

Can someone please explain this option to me? I'm missing something. I sort of understand Change_Detection_and_Notification, and the need for vigilance, but the part about including my email address eludes me. What does my email address have to do with any of this? Danglingdiagnosis (talk) 07:26, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

MediaWiki has a change notification feature for accounts with an email address but it's disabled at the English Wikipedia for performance reasons so I don't think the box matters currently. See more at Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/2009 August 27#Include my email address when other people are notified of changes I make. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:01, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

E-mailing external persons on behalf of my Wikipedia account

I am E-mailing a school that has been involved in serious vandalism. But I wonder, is there a way that I can E-mail that school on behalf of Wikipedia and my Wikipedia account? If I use my private E-mail, it is regarded as I am speaking for my self off-wiki. I want the email sent on behalf of my Wikipedia account, not me personally, as I am not involved in the case in any matter personally, I am just informing the school about their pupil's actions. Link in toolbox

Seems to have disappeared. Still works in popups, & other gadgets. DGG ( talk ) 20:01, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

Self-outing not sufficiently highlighted

I sent an email to a user who had contacted me by email. I didn't trust that user. Instead of replying to him in gmail, I went to his user page to 'email user' there - thinking that that way I'd avoid revealing my email address (which contains my name). Unfortunately, I didn't read the top of the email page where it gently warns that I'll reveal my address. I'm now pretty pissed off... but hey, I should have looked up (I realise that now, but well, I was tired at the time, it was late, and my first time emailing via WP... etc). But anyway, couldn't we put a red exclamation mark at the top to warn people? Something that would definitely catch their attention? I'd hate someone else to be shafted by WP's ill-thought out system (why reveal the address at all? Why not send everything through WP anonymously? That's how I had automatically assumed it would work :( ). Thx, a pissed off Malick78 (talk) 21:47, 20 June 2012 (UTC)

I support your wish. This issue has already been discussed some time ago in the wikitech-l mailinglist, but without a solution. --Wikinaut (talk) 22:36, 20 June 2012 (UTC)
It's already bolded. The text is from MediaWiki:Emailpagetext. Suggestions (only affecting the English Wikipedia) can be posted at MediaWiki talk:Emailpagetext. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:36, 20 June 2012 (UTC)
It may be bolded, but it still evaded my attention. I don't claim to be the smartest fellow around, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who might have benefited from something more eye-catching. Lastly, it could hardly hurt to tweak it. Thanks for the suggestion though - I'll post at the page you suggest. Malick78 (talk) 15:48, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
It might be worth adding a check box to the "send email" screen saying "I understand that emailing a user discloses my own email address to the recipient". The email feature would not work unless the box was checked. 67.117.130.72 (talk) 20:09, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

No you can't

So where the hell is this alleged "E-mail this user" button? EVERY SINGLE user page I have checked lacks this. So why does this help page claim otherwise? --111.188.208.142 (talk) 04:05, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

You only get the option if you are logged in with email enabled, and the other user also has email enabled. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:49, 16 July 2012 (UTC)
