Claque is the wrong word[edit]

The more I think on it, the more I think this. Too strong a connotation of being paid. Also, these groupings tend to have amorphous edges, the membership shifts and coalesces, and folk form alliances of convenience (unwittingly in many cases I suspect), sometimes for very short periods. On my talk just now User:LessHeard vanU talked about the word "confluence" which carries a good meaning (of coming together for a time) even if it too is not the complete single magic word.

But using "claque" immediately allows the essay to be dismissed with "but we're not being paid, so begone". sort of reasoning. Is there a perfect single word? Bogging down in what something is called is a danger, and it's a tactic often employed by those wishing not to discuss the something, whatever it may be. Soo...
