World Language Policies is designed to introduce upperclassmen in Linguistics, International Affairs, or Political Science to the intersections of language in the world of politics and legislature. In this course we will primarily focus on learning and understanding language rights, language policies, and language planning from a national and international perspective. This course covers such scholarly areas as the legal status of language and language rights; the interrelations between globalization, nationalism, ethnicity, identity and language policy; linguistic ecology; effects of multilingualism on social and political issues; language minoritization and endangerment. Considering that the UN proclaimed this year, 2019, the year of indigenous languages, we will pay special attention to the role of indigeneity in language policies.
