@Rowanwindwhistler, I haven't done this myself, but I remember hearing somewhere that when an older dissertation is ordered, the printing company digitizes the dissertation at the same time and puts it online (which is to say that it isn't cost-effective to digitize an older dissertation unless someone pays for it)—not sure, though czar 00:13, 17 December 2015 (UTC)
Last time I asked the Spanish National Library for one they brought a paper copy all the way from some US university to Spain but it is rather cumbersome. You have to pay for the shipping and then you cannot borrow it, you have read it in the library premises, which happens to be rather far away from home. Kent James/Nick Name

The new article Kent James is currently in a poorly referenced state and makes no strong claim of notability under either WP:NMUSIC or WP:NACTOR — so technically it's AFDable. However, there is a potential alternative to deletion here: the subject was formerly known by the pseudonym "Nick Name", under which he fronted a band called "Nick Name and the Normals" who had an independent documentary film made about them in 2004. The problem, however, is that because the band broke up over a decade ago, I'm not finding strong sourcing on Google to determine whether converting this into an article about either the band or the film is a viable alternative or not — and in terms of more specialized login databases, I only have access to ProQuest's Canadian media databases (but not to any of its American ones), newspapers.com and EBSCOhost. None of which assisted at all, so shifting the article's focus doesn't look promising at this point, but I still wanted to ask if somebody could run a check on Nick Name and the Normals in other databases (Highbeam? @LouisAragon: Amazon's "Look inside" feature includes the 22 page index. The bulk of the book is 169 pages of lists of governors by province. "Surprise Me!" shows 80-90% of the M to Z portion of those lists. Signing in to an amazon.com account may show more. If you need scans of four or five other specific pages, I can supply them. Your Computer (homecomputer magazine 80s)

Hi, I need to check a review published in the UK computer magazine Your Computer from november 1983 for the Spectravideo SV-318 homecomputer article in German Wikipedia. All other issues of that magazine are available online at archive.org but not this particular issue :o( Unfortunately I don't have page numbers. Hi @Knurrikowski: No real solutions for UK computer magazine Your Computer from November 1983 Volume 3 Number 11 but a few ideas:
  • First, I'm inferring volume/number from this image of the cover from the UK centre for computing history; you could check if they have a research service available to get scans.
  • Alas, I double-checked the archive.org listings for Your Computer and agree this issue is missing; you could email Jason Scott (archive.org staffer who has a personal interest in microcomputer history) to see if they do have a copy waiting to be scanned.
  • It appears that ISSN is 0263-0885 and using the OCLC number, 465364609, you can see a list of libraries that have *some* holdings of this magazine.
  • The British Library runs an on-demand service and that would be a pretty sure way to get a copy.
  • Ulrich's claims that there are two abstracting & indexing services: Construction Research and Innovation (Active) (Print) and Guidelines (Ceased) (Print). That sounds suspicious to me and these are both in print, so I think getting the page number without a copy in front of you or an author's name is going to be difficult.
  • I'd suggest posting at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Video games and possibly reaching out to folks at the World of Spectrum site.

Modern source for the population of Londinium

I am looking for "Londinium and Beyond: Essays on Roman London and Its Hinterland", John Clark (ed), 2008, the chapter titled "The Population of Roman London" by Williams, T; Swain, H., to get current expert estimates for the population of Londinium. I've tried searching for the chapter itself (since the book is mostly a collection of conference papers) but without luck. --Tiptoethrutheminefield (talk) 17:18, 14 February 2016 (UTC)

@Tiptoethrutheminefield: No real answers, but some directions:
  • People can check nearby library holdings in WorldCat; this looks like a special research report of the Council for British Archaeology so I'm not surprised you can't find the chapter itself; UCL has the abstract only (no full-text) publicly available in its repository. First author Tim Williams might be willing to give a copy by email, or the population quote you are looking for; and we find the full citation formatted thus: Williams, T., Swain, H. (2008). The population of Roman London. In Clark, J., Cotton, J., Hall, J., Sherris, R., Swain, H. (Eds.), Londinium and beyond. Essays on Roman London and its hinterland for Harvey Sheldon. (pp. 33-40). York: Council for British Archaeology.
  • At King's College London, there is a module (=AmE course) on Roman London; likely you know the rest of the (older) bibliography there. But perhaps the instructor would be willing to give the figure you need...

@Doc Taxon: Yes I am, or at least the article is, since Londinium still does not have data on the current accepted estimates for the population. There is an editor on the Londinium article, Dr.K, who insists on using the older and now invalid population estimates you still find reproduced in general non-academic sources, so a modern specialist source is needed. On Being Hawaiian

I need helping finding citation information for "On Being Hawaiian", a book/essay which was printed four different time. These are my attempts at listing the ones I could find online either on worldcat.org or elsewhere. What was the third edition? And was the 1964 print shorter than the other prints because it was called an essay (although it is understandable that there could be a long essay); I don't trust the worldcat.org information since they even got the publisher wrong (it was the Honolulu Star-Bulletin not Topgallant who published the first edition)?

My university has some through JSTOR, but not many; lots of them are in the more obscure JSTOR databases that most universities won't have. My university has most of these in book form, though. The only one I can't currently access is the second bullet point, so if anyone wants to grab that one, feel free. If it's not done in ~2 weeks, ping me. Does anyone have access to the table of contents of this book?

I've been trying to get hold of this book to improve Chahamanas of Shakambhari, but it is out-of-stock on online shopping sites such as Amazon and Flipkart. What I need is a list of inscriptions issued by the Chahamana kings, including find-spot, the reigning king, and the year of issue (e.g. "Anvalda pillar inscription of Someśvara V. @. 1234"). Once I have this list, I can find more details about those inscriptions from other sources that I've access to (unfortunately, those sources do not contain a systematic list of all the available inscriptions).

Can anyone source for me the additional detail I need to make this citation transparent:

"Unknown Title". The Ibis. British Ornithologists' Union: 422. 1887.

That is, the source is a journal and I believe the cite is to a collection of articles, so I would hope someone could look at page 422 (I am using a detail I can see in Google snippet view from it), and then tell me name of the article it comes from, all author names, and the date, volume and issue no. of The Ibis it originally appeared in.

@Fuhghettaboutit: p. 422 is from: Wray, Richard B. (October 1887). "On the Structure of the Barbs, Barbules, and Barbicels of a Typical Pennaceous Feather". The Ibis. 29 (4): 420–423. Wiley has it but a free version of the journal is held on the Internet Archive. Verification of alleged fake star name in celestial atlas

A rather common vandalism act consists in adding fake names to star articles in the Wikipedia (more information here). I have found a probable fake name for Delta Aquilae, "Denebokab" or "Deneb Okab", about which there is no reliable source prior to its addition in the mentioned Wikipedia article. Most probably, if not vandalism, the alleged fake name is due to a confusion with Epsilon Aquilae and Zeta Aquilae which are both named similarly ("Deneb el Okab", having reliable sources both).

However, upon my "citation needed" request, a user has recently added a citation, in theory reliable, but very difficult to verify. Therefore I ask for collaboration to check this name. I am almost sure the name such name is not in any book (also because such a name is nonsense: "deneb okab" means "tail of the eagle", an this star is not the tail but the chest of the eagle).

@Eynar and Lithopsian: The Google Books snippet view doesn't help because the book hasn't been indexed for searching (perhaps because it's almost entirely tables of numbers). The cited page number is also incorrect. The citing editor may have mistakenly entered the number of pages the book has (286 is the last numbered page), rather than the page number that supports the statement.
Email me for a scan of the relevant page (p. 277). It is the first page of the second table in the "Tables" appendix, titled "TAB. II. JMÉNA HVĔZD.", and below that "Названия звезд — Names of the stars." In one of the articles here on Wikipedia about a living person, Jacob Barnett, there is in the article and in the latest Afd for the same article listed a link for a Katie Couric talk show where she interviews the aforementioned person. In the article (as of today December 4th 2016) the link provided is this: katiecouric.com/ whereas the link in the Afd is given as this: katiecouric.com/2013/05/30/living-with-autism/

The latter link would suggest an air-date of May 30th 2013, and this seems to be confirmed by a listing of the show on www.tv.com: Katie Couric chats with 14-year-old genius The title of this specific show/segment could be: "The 14-Year-Old Living with Autism Who Could Win a Nobel Prize".

I have not been able to locate this show neither by following the links nor by searching the Katie Couric website or YouTube or Google for that matter.

For Reed water tube boiler, I would be very grateful for a copy of a brief notice in Engineering of the death of Joseph William Reed, the boiler's creator. It's available on Google Books, which reports the volume as being number 133 of 1932 and the page as 374, but I'm only seeing snippet view, so it might start on p. 373 or extend to p. 375. It appeared in Journal of the American Society of Naval Engineers, volume 67, issue 1,[9] but according to that source it was reprinted there from The Engineer, where it first appeared on 16 & 23 July 1954, presumably in two parts. @KAVEBEAR: Sorry, not sure I was clear. I've got the start/end page numbers, it's just unclear how many pages are in between due to the Roman numeral page numbering. Do you happen to know? I would typically request that the library scan the pages for me and just send me the copy, given the facility this book is held in, but there is a limit to how much they're willing to scan. If the foreward and notes are long enough, I may have to instead request that they transfer the book to a facility I can access. @BU Rob13: From what I can tell the Roman numerals end at xv. So it should be around fifteen pages for the foreword plus eight pages for a total of 23 pages. If that is too much the range can be shorten to iv to 8, since the Roman numerals before are table of content pages that I don't necessarily need. The Memorial of Saint Helena

This should not require any scanning or borrowing of books but I am trying to track down the pages surrounding this image. The source claims it is in the first Italian edition of The Memorial of Saint Helena, Volume 1, 1842, by Emmanuel, Count de Las Cases (1766-1842) with drawings by Nicolas-Toussaint Charles. Problem is I've look through a lot of these vol 1 on archive.org and can't seem to find the image.
