Hello White Shadow

Hey, White Shadows. Thanks for offering to help me out. I guess i still have a lot to learn. I have also learned a lot from Wikipedia, so i guess we have something in common. By the way, i love your username. It's really cool. ;) CamrynRocks! (talk) 23:43, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

How's it going White Shadows? Did you get around to getting a second opinion on this article yet? I'm just curious as to how its going.99.69.190.50 (talk) 00:21, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

No, no yet. You see I am very buisy IRL so I have'nt the time yet. Do you thnik that you can ask someone about it? Thanks :)--White Shadows you're breaking up 16:53, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

Well, I guess you could always just post it on the main page. That'll certainly give you a whole bunch of opinions. Ha Ha! I don't know who to ask, but I guess I could just pick someone out of the hat. I believe its good enough that it won't be deleted without giving us further oportunity to work on it if it needs it. Also, could it be posted as a "stub" or "orphan" maybe?99.69.190.50 (talk) 17:19, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

Well it si certainly not a stub. You could ask User:Theleftorium about it. He may be able to give a good opinion.--White Shadows you're breaking up 17:21, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

OK, I dropped him a line.99.69.190.50 (talk) 17:45, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

Great! Now we just wait. I've got to go now though. RL calls :P--White Shadows you're breaking up 17:47, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

The article looks good, and it seems there's enough sources to meet Wikipedia's notability guideline. Just make sure that you follow our verifiability and "neutral point of view" guidelines and I don't think you will run into any trouble. One suggestion: You should probably format the references with the {{cite news}} template (instructions on how to use it are available on this page). Regards, Theleftorium 20:06, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

I was alluding to the comment you made on Camryn's talk page, thus the quote marks. Age is nothing to worry about, as C.S. Well, even though you sort of found it by cheating, you can have the barnstar. There's a ships barnstar?! Dammit, why didn't you say so! Well, the thingy inside the star looks kinda like a submarine's door...thing. You know the things they use to open them? The big turny things you spin around? Whaddya call 'em...somthing. Well, anyway, for accumulating so many GA's in such a short period has to be worth at least this arrangement of pixels on a computer screen, Lord Spongefrog, (I am Czar of all Russias!) 21:42, 5 April 2010 (UTC)
Do you mean a hatch? Thanks for the homemade barnstar LSF, why don;t you propose it to become an official one?--White Shadows you're breaking up 21:52, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

If you wrote it from scratch, and you've gotten a DYK and GA, you are three fourths of the way to a WP:FOUR. FA, of course, is the hardest part (so is the waiting), but you've got to get your feet wet there sometime (hopefully, not while in a submarine, as that could be a bad sign).--Wehwalt (talk) 12:43, 6 April 2010 (UTC)

Nice use of irony Wehwlat :) Anyway, I knwo aobut the Four Award and I hope to get there one day. however, my submarine articles are no where near an FA. I may have to spend a while picking a article of mine and then working my way there.--White Shadows you're breaking up 00:01, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
There is no time limit. I was lucky on my first FA because I was basically carried along by an experienced FA writer and I just played backup for him all the way. Perhaps a plan is to aim at MilHist A-class, which is so close to FA, the difference can't be measured.--Wehwalt (talk) 00:06, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
Good advice :) I'll think about A-class. Perhpas I'll start out with Battle of Belgium which I helped got to GA status as a test run for the supposed horrors of FA.--White Shadows you're breaking up 00:14, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

New Mexico GA review

Hi White Shadows. I noticed that you have had the New Mexico article under review, but there have been no comments on the review page (Talk:New Mexico/GA1) for over two weeks. Are you still working on this review? Dana boomer (talk) 02:43, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

Yes I am still reviewing it.--White Shadows you're breaking up 20:58, 9 April 2010 (UTC)
OK, that's great. I was just checking in due to the longer-than-normal hold period, especially with almost nothing being done in over two weeks. Also, the article as it currently stands is a quick-fail candidate, with cleanup banners from 2008, just FYI. Dana boomer (talk) 01:25, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

I'll take a look in a minute. :) Theleftorium 18:56, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
You might want to expand the lede to a second paragraph. The prose is reasonably good, good enough for a DYK and when it is ready, GA.--Wehwalt (talk) 19:05, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

I'm sorry but the close paraphrasing remains. Compare, for example, the following text from the source:

From the autumn of 1940 Bordeaux had been the base for the Italian Betasom submarine flotilla. The first 3 Italian submarines entered the base in September, 1940. On October 9, 1940 the first Italian submarine Malaspina left the base for a Atlantic patrol and few days later operated against the convoy OB-229. Roughly 25 Italian submarines were attached to the flotilla at one time or another, but attempts to stage an effective cooperation with the German wolf pack attacks failed for the most part and sinkings for the Italian boats were much lower than of their German allies.[2]

with the article:

The city then became the base for the Italian Betasom submarine flotilla. The first three Italian submarines entered the base at Bordeaux in September 1940. On 9 October 1940 the first Italian submarine, Malaspina, left the base for patrol in the Atlantic Ocean and a few days later saw action against the convoy OB-229. About 25 Italian submarines were attached to the Betasom flotilla at one time or another but attempts to stage an effective cooperation with the German "wolf pack" attacks failed for the most part and sinkings for the Italian U-boats were much lower than those of their German allies.

I strongly encourage you to compare all paragraphs of the article with the sources before moving it to the mainspace. Theleftorium 19:11, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

Alright then. Can any of you help me re-word it?--White Shadows you're breaking up 19:12, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
I'm sorry but I don't have time for that at the moment. I think it would be a good learning experience for you to do it yourself. Two tips: Use more sources and leave out unimportant details. Theleftorium 19:18, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
Keep in mind that generally books tend to write in more detail than is needed for summary style.--Wehwalt (talk) 19:21, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
Well ok. It's just that I've already got over 70 edits to the thing and I'm getting tired of trying to fix this. Can anyone else help me out. Can I entice you with a barnstar?--White Shadows you're breaking up 19:22, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
I only accept Visa, the official credit card of the Olympics and Wehwalt.--Wehwalt (talk) 19:26, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
I cannot pay you. I can only give you a set of aranged pixles on a computer screen for you rewording a set of pixles on a computer screen.--White Shadows you're breaking up 19:28, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
(ec) To be honest, you've only made this attempt at a rewrite since I tagged the article on March 13. Theleftorium 19:30, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
Any to be honset, I'm tired of editing it. Sorry. I'll get to it later. It sill needs commas and what not as well.--White Shadows you're breaking up 19:32, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
Seriously, I agree with Theleftorium. If writing too close to the source is a problem for you, you need to learn to solve it. I mean, the written page is the easiest path because of the fact that, well, somebody has done it and it's worked. It's not always easy to vary from that, but it has to be done, it will benefit you not only here but in RL, no doubt your teaching units take dim views of close paraphrasing and it is only going to get stricter from here.--Wehwalt (talk) 19:33, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
But I don't know how to re-write it. Every time that I start to, I look at the preview and it still looks the same as the origional. I don't know how to fix that.--White Shadows you're breaking up 19:36, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
Delete a section, wait a day, and do it again. Or try writing it on a different page in your userspace, working from the sources, after not having looked at the article for a day. You'll write it differently, I suspect, and that will give you hints on how to avoid it.--Wehwalt (talk) 19:40, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

White Shadows, here are some links I'm sure will be of help: Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2009-04-13/Dispatches, [3], [4]. Theleftorium 19:47, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, remember we face very few problems that have not been faced before. Sometimes it is worth reinventing the wheel, but in the day of the Internet, a google search and a few resources will do the trick!--Wehwalt (talk) 19:50, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
More sources would be good. I've also started to work on the Brest section as well.--White Shadows you're breaking up 19:53, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
The reason it's important that you learn how to paraphrase is that most colleges/universities use plagiarism detectors such as Turnitin or SafeAsssignment and lots of high schools are now too. If the software returns a positive result for plagiarism, which it would based on the paragraphs above, you might well find yourself with an F on the assignment. College professors often give Fs for a course in such a case. I'll take a shot at one of the paragraph to see what I can do, but you need to learn how to do this. It's important, and here on Wikipedia there are people willing to teach you. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 01:14, 11 April 2010 (UTC)
I know but I am fairly good at writeing and I normally do not plagiarise. I only made a close comparison with this article because I was in a rush to get it done and I thought that If I use diffrent words here and there, everything would be fine. Well I was wrong. Thanks for the advice and the help though.--White Shadows you're breaking up 01:19, 11 April 2010 (UTC)
In college all the students have to submit their papers to Turnitin, regardless of the writing ability. Lots of time they are unaware that they're plagiarising because like this example they think that changing a few words will do the trick. Because writing is so hard (for all of us), the respectful thing to do is never ever take another persons' work. Taking their idea is okay, but really reword the work and make it your own. Don't consider this a personal attack: it's given in the spirit of being helpful. I'm also going to add the ISBN to the book in the references section. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 01:33, 11 April 2010 (UTC)
It's not a PA, it's advice. And you are going aobut the right way of telling me. I understand that even "close paraphraseing" can be wrong and I'll try to prevent that from ever becomeing an issue for me. You see, with most of my U-boat articles, I have to take a map of the oceans around Europe that has a few dots and the names of aobut 3-6 ships and make that into a paragraph. I'm pretty good at writeing, I just need to make it my own words.--White Shadows you're breaking up 01:43, 11 April 2010 (UTC)
Agreed, these guys came out and said what I was alluding to. It is good advice. And please, WS, if you are saying you are pretty good at writing, at least spell it right!--Wehwalt (talk) 01:50, 11 April 2010 (UTC)
sorry, I tend not to look at the keyboard when I'm typeing and I do type pretty fast. It's not that I do not know how to spell, rather that I make many many typos.--White Shadows you're breaking up 01:52, 11 April 2010 (UTC)
I suspect you probably text a lot which can cause some bad habits. Here you have a handy preview key to check what you've written before hitting save. It's a good feature worth using. I also make keyboarding mistakes, in fact made one in an earlier post on this thread, and I always preview my work before saving. I'm a very slow editor! Truthkeeper88 (talk) 01:56, 11 April 2010 (UTC)
Trust me, compared to my other firends, I'm nothing (10,000 in a month, my God!) anyway, TBH, I hate "text language" even though I use it a lot. Have you not noticed that I my choice of words are very...well not teen-ish?--White Shadows you're breaking up 02:00, 11 April 2010 (UTC)
Yes, I have noticed. But it's not so much the language but the actual keyboarding that creates weird habits. Texting quickly is transferred to typing quickly - that's what I meant. Anyway, I've made a few fixes. Have a look at how I changed the language, and then give it a try yourself on a few of the paragraphs. I'll watch the page and see how you do. Good luck. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 02:09, 11 April 2010 (UTC)
Yes, but that went without saying. Were they teenish, no one would have taken you seriously to begin with.--Wehwalt (talk) 02:10, 11 April 2010 (UTC)
So your saying that the only way that people take me seriously is becasue of my chioce of words. So If I were to start tlking like "OMG, i just got a article to ga status!!!!!! TTYL." then I would be blown off in regular discussions?--White Shadows you're breaking up 02:14, 11 April 2010 (UTC)
The fact that you can take little dots on a map of an ocean and turn it into a narrative is worthy of respect. Don't worry about the rest. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 02:17, 11 April 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. goodnight :)--White Shadows you're breaking up 02:18, 11 April 2010 (UTC)

Both for the vote of confidence and for the offer of support. I might take you up on it at some point, perhaps as just a third opinion. It seems that everywhere I turn, someone's telling me I'm wasting my time and some are less... diplomatic... than others, so thank you.

The Resilient Barnstar
For going with your gut feeling and for having the bollocks to defend it, I award you this barnstar! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 00:59, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
Aww. You did'nt need to award me for it HJ. Im happy to support the unblocking of anyone who can benefit this project. Your not wasteing your time but investing it in another editor. Kudos to that.--White Shadows you're breaking up 01:05, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
Well thank you. For everything. On another note, would you mind striking your "captain pointy" remark- I understand your frustration (trust me, I do!) but it's not really helpful to the discussion. I'm not sure the discussion is going anywhere fast, but it would be nice to establish consensus for unblocking him under those restrictions at some point, even if the consensus deems it shouldn't be now. Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 01:38, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
Very well. No need to fuel the flames I suppose. I do feel that he was trying to make a point in that argument however.--White Shadows you're breaking up 01:39, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

Reply to your comments at HJ's talk page

I suppose I could have phrased it more diplomatically, but the sentiment behind it stands. It isn't ageism to notice that you occasionally have unsound judgement when it comes to editor interactions on Wikipedia. If there are reasons other than age why this is so, then my mistake. While this is usually easily overcome and corrected, and you can treat it as a learning experience, in this case if DG follows bad advice, he will end up indef blocked. HJ's task is nearly impossible as it is, don't make it harder. Also, NSD has been here 4 months, with almost 5000 edits; it's probably time to stop protecting him with WP:BITE. He gave spectacularly bad advice, and I tried to nip it in the bud.

I realize that any time now I will keel over in my old age, and a younger editor will have to take my place, and control of Wikipedia will pass to your generation. Until then, I suggest that you'll be more ready to take over if you take more care in how you handle yourself. --Floquenbeam (talk) 23:28, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

Thanks. You just came off as a bit "mean" I guess. I understnad and I wish HJ the best in an impossible task. Yes, I do seem to be a drama magnet but I hope that no harm was caused in this discussion. No hard feelings. I just felt like you could have worded that better. I can watch from the sidelines and be the cheerleader this time around. One day, people like me will be the crats and the amdins and the CU's and so on and so forth. Let's just hope that that day is a long time away from now, for both of our sakes. Hi White Shadows,

I noticed that you had cited significant amount of content Specifically from uboat.net. When I had previously tried to do the same, I had got an earful when I used http://ww2.dk/ eventhough that website clearly provided the books it had referenced for its content. So I would be curious to know how you fare with the GA Review on this article. Do you mind letting me know ? TIA '  Perseus 71 talk 01:50, 17 April 2010 (UTC)

Well Uboat.net has been confirmed as a RS by several people such as Ed 17 and Bellhalla. See User:Bellhalla/uboat.net reliability for more.--White Shadows you're breaking up 14:52, 17 April 2010 (UTC)

Yup, I'm trying to do one right now with U-66. I just wonder why some of your work got past with no mention about uboat.net not being a source, and why some were failed, like U-43. I like Jezhotwells, but I don't want this to happen to me. Buggie111 (talk) 21:54, 17 April 2010 (UTC)

The reason being is that some people (who are not into this field) judt don't think that the site is a RS. Trust me, it is and this has been re-affirmed by several people on this site who do edit naval articles. As long as someone who has a history in the field of U-boats is the GA reviewer, it will pass. How to link to a category without adding the current page to it

When you want to insert a page into a category, you surround the link with two brackets, like this:

[[Category:Sockpuppets of The Rabid Squirrel]]

But if you only want to link to the category, you have to "disable" the link by inserting a colon after the first pair of brackets:

[[:Category:Sockpuppets of The Rabid Squirrel]]

This little trick works for images as well. Normally, if you want to include an image into a particular page, you just simply type a wikilink to that category. But if you only want to link to the image, you must add a colon before the first letter of the link.

Best wishes, Soap 00:27, 18 April 2010 (UTC)

I just got the first taste of this myself, and I notice the email address is the same as the one that he used last year, on his original account. (we communicated through email a bit) So it seems likely to me that if he used the same email address for a very early account and a much more recent one, he probably used the same email address for all the ones in between. So you could block out all of his emails from all accounts simply by blocking the true originating email address. (Provided that your email provider has filtering ... but almost every one does nowadays.) I might be wrong, though; I'm going to have to test it myself before I can be confident that this will work. Soap 22:46, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
yeah, it works. To anyone being email bombed by SGF under any account: if your email provider has filtering capabilities, look for a filter that allows you blacklist certain senders and then add [sciencegolffanatic's underlying email address] to the blacklist. That should block out his emails, no matter which Wikipedia account they come from. Soap 22:57, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
I have it on a filter but they are not deleted automatically....--White Shadows you're breaking up 22:59, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
Yahoo email allows automatic deletion, but I prefer to just send them to a spam folder because I'd like to at least be aware of them and the email storage is, as far as I know, unlimited. Soap 23:05, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

I've set up a rule on OS X Mail to move the messages with SGF's email to a folder and mark them as read so my inbox doesn't have a huge number of unread messages on it. ~NERDYSCIENCEDUDE (✉ messagechanges) 23:10, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

Same here. Mine's called "Trash" and if I ever see anything in it, I take one look at the crap he writes to me and then delete it. It takes a whole 3 seconds.--White Shadows you're breaking up 23:23, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

And I've nominated Babenberg for a DYK.After the Teghetthoffs, I'll continue my off-wiki work on Germn submarine U-66 (1940) and might ask you to check my sources. Cheers! Buggie111 (talk) 00:39, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

Sure. I'll be more than happy to help :) And as for the leads, do you mind if you do them? I'm not that good with leads. Thanks :)--White Shadows you're breaking up 00:43, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
I've made the noms have all the articles in them and given you nom credit fro the Arpad and the Habsburg as well as make credit for the Babenburg while I get make credit for all of them. How's that? Oh and can you please add in the little dash things above the A's in "Arpad" in the hook and the whole template in the DYK for me? MY computer will not let me copy it in there.--White Shadows you're breaking up 00:53, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
Ok, I'm fine. Buggie111 (talk) 00:59, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
Can you still fix the name of the ship in the hook? Just copy the name of it (Arpad) from the article and paste it anywhere that appears in the edit screen in DYK. That will be the last thing needed ;) Thanks.--White Shadows you're breaking up 01:01, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
you still left the ones in the hidden text :)--White Shadows you're breaking up 01:03, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
Ok. Wonder how I missed them... Buggie111 (talk) 01:15, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
I fyou hevan't seen the reviews, the part about part of the superstructure being removed has a cite needed tag. Since you added it to most of them, could you go fix it? I'll copyedit them later today. Buggie111 (talk) 17:27, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
Sure. I'll take a look :)--White Shadows you're breaking up 20:25, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

ScienceGolfFanatic has been taken down (for now)

After receiving more email bombs today, I decided enough was enough. I had Elockid (talk · contribs) sweep through Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/ScienceGolfFanatic/Archive and email block all of the remaining accounts that weren't already email blocked. Hopefully we won't get anything bad from SGF anytime soon. ~NerdyScienceDude (✉ messagechanges) 22:31, 26 April 2010 (UTC)

Thank you so much. If I ever become an admin, this would be a lot faster. Anway thanks for sweeping through those accounts :)--White Shadows you're breaking up 01:03, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
It's nice to have an admin like Elockid, who is experienced with dealing with sock puppets. While we're here, I now have two DYK's and my most recent submission recently got ticked. I also redid my userpage to look similar to yours. ~NerdyScienceDude (✉ messagechanges) 23:23, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
I know. good job. your on you way "dude". Now if you'd excuse me, I'm heading over to 42 and trying to get this thing set up for a DYK.--White Shadows you're breaking up 23:26, 28 April 2010 (UTC)

Question

Hey White Shadows. I had a question for you, based on your extensive work on WWII articles. For a writing project I am looking into pursuing (outside of Wikipedia), I need to read up a bit about the history of World War II in Poland, particularly how the country was affected after the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. I am less interested in the specific battles than I am about how ordinary citizens were affected, and about how the Polish Jews survived during that time. Can you direct me to any good historical writings or literature on this topic? Or direct me to someone who can? Thanks! — Hunter Kahn 04:18, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

Hello Hunter Kahn. First off, I think that you mean the Soviet Invasion of 1939, not 1941. By 1941, the USSR was being invaded by Germany. I'll answer the question in a sec. sorry for the inconvinience :)--White Shadows you're breaking up 22:56, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
I have a few books on the subject about Poland under both German and Soviet Occupation. The Rise And Fall Of The Third Reich by William L. Shirer is a good one to try out. There's also Killing Hitler, that talks alot about the Polish underground. I'll try to get back with you in more depth about this question tomorrow. I'm very buisy IRL right now with school and all. Perhaps tomorrow or later this week I may be able to have more time to help you out. If you want, you can also go to a few other people like Ed. User:Buzzzsherman also has a ton of WWII related books in his hands. Onwe of them is bound to mention Poland.--White Shadows you're breaking up 23:11, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

Another U-boat article

I just created SM UB-50, a German U-boat from World War I. You you be willing to help me expand it? ~NerdyScienceDude (✉ messagechanges) 16:20, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

Count me in also. Buggie111 (talk) 22:34, 29 April 2010 (UTC)
Minor thing, there is no link to the patrols on u-boat net, so it's going to take a while to find them. Buggie111 (talk) 22:35, 29 April 2010 (UTC)
The Triple Entente is on the move again!--White Shadows you're breaking up 22:36, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

K, after a look at the Ships Hit page, I've been able to lay out the patrols:

  1. 8 Sep 1917-26 Sep 1917 First
  2. 28 Oct 1917-9 Nov 1917 Second
  3. 19 Dec 1917-7 Jan 1918 Third
  4. 22 Mar 1918-11 Apr 1918 Fourth
  5. 17 May 1918-25 May 1918 Fifth
  6. 13 Jul 1918-13 Jul 1918 Sixth
  7. 9 Nov 1918 Seventh (already covered)

Hope this helps, WS and NSD. Buggie111 (talk) 22:53, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 April newsletter

Round two is over, and we are down to our final 32. For anyone interested in the final standings (though not arranged by group) this page has been compiled. Congratulations to Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions), our clear overall round winner, and to Colombia ThinkBlue (submissions) and Norway Arsenikk (submissions), who were solidly second and third respectively. There were a good number of high scorers this round- competition was certainly tough! Round three begins tomorrow, but anything promoted after the end of round two is eligible for points. 16 contestants (eight pool leaders and eight wildcards) will progress to round four in two months- things are really starting to get competitive. Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Judge iMatthew has retired from Wikipedia, and we wish him the best. The competition has been ticking over well with minimal need for judge intervention, so thank you to everyone making that possible. A special thank you goes to participants Bavaria Stone (submissions) and White Shadows (submissions) for their help in preparing for round three. Good luck everyone! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
