Feedback for first contribution[edit]

Hi there Wikicommunity!

I have added the category "Schools and Departments" on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renmin, as well as the belonging subgroups. I'd like to ask for some feedback about the way I did it and especially on the question of copyrights.

The note on the bottom of the page http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_School_of_Public_Administration&action=edit&section=1 states: "Please do not copy and paste from copyrighted websites – only public domain resources can be copied without permission." I think that my reference (even though I did copy and paste) belongs to a public domain, doesn"t it? No problems with copyrights, right? Thanks for the feedback!!

Speedy deletion of "The School of Business"[edit]

A page you created, The School of Business, has been tagged for deletion, as it meets one or more of the criteria for speedy deletion; specifically, it is about a real person, group of people, band, club, company, organisation, or web content, but does not indicate why its subject is important or significant.

You are welcome to contribute content which complies with our content policies and any applicable inclusion guidelines. However, please do not simply re-create the page with the same content. You may also wish to read our introduction to editing and guide to writing your first article.

Thank you. Metricopolus (talk) 12:38, 28 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on The School of Public Administration requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a clear copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Please stop[edit]

You've asked for feedback on your early contributions, so I am assuming good faith on your part that you simply don't understand the Wikipedia policies, which, admittedly, can be rather confusing to a newcomer. One of the primary rules on Wikipedia is that you can't just copy text from another website for inclusion on Wikipedia without explicit permission from the original site to do so. Any site that does not explicitly claim that its content is freely available is either explicitly or implicitly copyrighted. What that means is that it is illegal under the laws of the United States (the laws which govern the English language Wikipedia) to copy text from other websites without permission. Permission must be in the form of a statement on the source website that the material is placed into the public domain, or in the form of a communication from the website's owner to the Wikimedia Foundation to expressly permit the copying. You can find out more at WP:Copyright violations. In general, if you want to write about something, do so in your own words, not by copying someone else's. An apology[edit]

Permit me to apologize for the slew of warning messages that you have received, and for any harsh tone I might have used. As a new user, I can see that you are interested in improving Wikipedia's content regarding Renmin University. Congratulations for jumping in! Unfortunately, as you can see, you've jumped in somewhat badly, and may need to reconsider your approach. Read the guidelines that have been posted above, especially Your first article. These will give you some good ideas on how to create an article that is valuable to the community and not likely to be immediately deleted. Good luck!!! WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 13:00, 28 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the feedback! I hope at least the minor changes on Renmin University contribute in an productive way. I will aim to get better. Weiida (talk) 13:30, 28 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright problems and notability[edit]

Wikipedia cannot accept material copied from other sites unless a formal copyright release has been made. Please read Wikipedia:Copy-paste.

In any case, Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a noticeboard for posting copies of material which already appears on websites and can be linked to: moreover, material on personal or organizational websites is usually written in a promotional tone unsuitable for an encyclopedia, which requires a neutral point of view and is not to be used for any kind of promotion.

Article subjects for Wikipedia are required to have notability, which is not a matter of opinion but must be WP:42|demonstrated by references showing significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources. Experience shows that individual schools or departments within a University are not often able to do this, and so are better covered by a paragraph within the main University article, which can link to the relevant websites. See Wikipedia:College and university article guidelines, particularly the section Faculties and academic colleges. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 13:50, 28 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
