Thunder Bay Transit

I got the fleet information from http://www.cptdb.ca/wiki/index.php/Thunder_Bay_Transit. There should be no route restruction coming up. Also, I have a friend working at TBT and I might be able to ask permission for scanning the bus passes.

Anishinaabe Project

Hello Vidioman, Thank you for the comments on the Nishnawbe-Aski Template. I see you know a lot about Northern and Northwestern Ontario. A few editors have created Wikipedia:WikiProject Indigenous peoples of North America/Anishinaabe to organize everything on wikipedia related to Anishinaabe peoples including the Ojibwe and Oji-Cree. You can also find templates, discussion, Ojibwe-language userboxes and other stuff. None of us are Canadian (though I recently moved from Wisconsin to NW Ontario), so the vast majority of articles on the Canadian side are stubs. Anything you can contribute would be much appreciated. Thunder Bay International Airport

I'm not sure what the CZBT is referring to Thunder Bay's airport is CYQT. I'm using the current Canada Flight Supplement and that's what ICAO and the Canadian Government use. Look at Eurocontrol and check both by entering them in the "Location Indicator" box. Also check Google CZTB and Google CYQT. It might be a weather station such as this. Cheers. Atikokan, Ontario

Hi Vidioman. Good work on the above noted article, you've made it a lot more readable. I note what appears to be a date discrepancy regarding Tom Rawn as the result of one of your edits "and in March 1945 with 60 claims in his name, created Rawn Iron Mines Ltd. On July 23, 1940, Rawn went out prospecting near Sapawe, and never returned." Looks like he formed a company 5 years after his death. Previous version "...in March 1940... On July 23 of the same year" makes more sense, I think he disappeared in 1940 so the March 1945 may in fact be March 1940. I didn't change anything as you obviously are more on top of the subject. Media

Yeah, I'd do something much like the Lethbridge list. Also take a look at List of Greater Sudbury media, particularly the "Out-of-market radio" subheading — we could do something similar for the Hot FM stations.

I'd still go for a primarily city-by-city treatment rather than regional media lists, though, because some cities (Kenora, for example) just don't have long enough treatments on here to even really think about splitting their media sections out of the main article right now. Okay, I have a basic list article set up at the title I mentioned above. There are still a few things that can be added to expand it, certainly (I'm going to look up the DTV channel assignments now), but if you're comfortable with it I can move it to List of Thunder Bay media, add the categories and change the media section on the city article into a link to the list. I should point out, of course, that doing it as a separate list isn't mandatory or anything like that — it's a fairly common way these days to reduce the length of the main article, but it's voluntary and it's not the only way that can be done. I just made a couple of very small style edits (a frequency should be given as "89.3 FM", not "89.3-FM"). The only noteworthy comment I have is that Survivor isn't a CTV program outside of Thunder Bay; it airs on Global. Accordingly, I removed the reference to Survivor as an example of CKPR's CTV programming, but if you can come up with a different one, please do add that instead. Bearcat 22:01, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

Jeddah Climatological Data

Thunder Bay Wards map

I think your Thunder Bay Wards map looks great. For a first map, it's outstanding. Suggestions could include:

  • Put the "Thunder Bay" title on a slant or somehow show that it applies to the entire expanse of water shown on the map (it does, doesn't it?). Right now, it's just too cramped in my opinion.
  • Insert a mini-map that helps folks unfamiliar with Thunder Bay to locate it within Canada or the Great lakes (e.g. I myself didn't know whether it was on Lake Superior or Lake Huron).
  • Add this map to as many articles as you can (that don't already have a map), even if they are not about Thunder Bay wards.

List of municipalities in the Golden Horseshoe

Hi Vidioman,

I loved your addition to the article, it makes the article (or rather list), one step closer to perfection. To tell you what, I like this edition with all the municipalities more over than this edition with just all the regional municipalities. Here's what I would suggest:

  1. Move your Sandbox 1 Edition (So with ALL the municipalities) to the List of municipalities in the Golden Horseshoe.
  2. Move your Sandbox 2 Edition (So with ALL the regional municipalities) into a template (they are too good to be a list, and plus, if we put them into the actual list, information will become very redundant.) I would be doing an experimental version of the template in my own sandbox. However, you can merge some info onto the actual list, i.e. the area and population.

List of Municipalities in the Golden Horseshoe

Hi Vidioman,

I agree with changing the chart format. The charts, in some cases, are way too big for computers with low screen resolution. I like the format used in List of municipalities in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, but I do like to "change" some of the formatting used in that list. I'll tell you about it later. The flagicon idea is brilliant, but I am not sure if we have flag icon for every single municipality.

And your offtoipic issue: I do not agree with NE2's "deleted highways". In fact, they are just decommissioned. To tell you what, I have suggested this before, but he/she simply won't listen to ANY of my suggestions. Good luck persuading him/her to change it.

Radio templates

Actually, it would be impossible to justify any radio template at all for most of the Thunder Bay District if they're not added to the TBay template, because the rest of the district doesn't have enough radio stations to warrant creating one. Grouping by census division is actually easier to justify in Northern Ontario than in the south, because the average southern Ontario census division has two or three times as many radio stations. Every radio station article should have some form of market template on it, which means it's necessary to organize the templates in such a way that there are templates which can account for and include every radio station and leave none untemplated. If you have a viable alternative to a "Thunder Bay District" template, be my guest, but CFNO et al. have to be included in a template somewhere. Bearcat 23:42, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

Even Toronto, which has three times as many stations to list as Thunder Bay would even after adding Greenstone and Marathon, only gets one market-wide template rather than separate "City of Toronto" and "Suburban GTA" templates. Vancouver, with about the same number of stations to list as Toronto has, gets one template for the entire Fraser Valley, not separate "Vancouver" and "Outside of Vancouver" templates. Montreal gets one MUC-wide template, not separate "Island of Montreal" and "Off-Island" templates. I can't really split a 10-station city out from its larger region into a dedicated template if 30-station metropolitan markets like Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver don't even get treated that way. Hell, metropolitan radio markets don't even get split AM/FM templates anymore, let alone subregions.

So I've got two conflicting imperatives here: the radio project's longstanding requirement to improve consistency by making market templates look and act the same as each other whenever possible, and your preference that I make Thunder Bay an isolated exception to current practice. In the case of Kenora, I think I probably would do a separate one for First Nations communities in the far north, since they're such a completely different media context than any other part of the province — but the Kenora template should link to that one under its "See also" section. I'd maybe even take Moosonee off the Cochrane District/Timmins template and put it on the far north one instead, since apart from getting CBC One from Sudbury instead of Thunder Bay, it really has a lot more in common with the isolated fly-in villages in northern Kenora District than it does with Timmins or Hearst. The wikipedia is a worldwide project. Many readers are going to have an uncertain idea of where Canada is. Orthographic projection is very useful to make clear where in the world a location is.

Further the location of Iqaluit disappears when you click on the thumbnail. Iqaluit is a port. Your placement of the red dot makes it look like the city is landlocked.

I should have left my comment on Talk:Iqaluit. I left a summary of our discussion there, and requested other's comments.
I did not point out that your reply strongly suggests you don't understand what a geographic projection is. Mercator projection is the most common, and the most confusing for areas near one of the Earth's poles. We don't know what projection was used by your red-dot map. But, IMO, it is not as good a projection as the Orthographic.
Orthographic has nothing to do with lines of latitude or longitude. An orthographic projection is one that represents the area in question as if viewed from outer space. Take a look at some of the other similar maps I made: [[2]].

While I will not challenge your removal of no-source tag in good-faith presumption, I just want to recommend against taking this image to Commons until the exact source is found because I have seen so many images with license tags but no sources being challenged and deleted there. For images not uploaded after 1st Jan 2006, Template:GFDL-presumed may be used in good faith, but these images are to be phased out and cannot be taken to Commons.--Jusjih 01:50, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

First Nations template

I've been thinking about what to do with the FN template, and I think I've finally got a suggestion. Instead of grouping them by community, group them by station. So for one section, the header would be "CKWT", and the list would be something like "90.1 Bearskin Lake • 89.9 Cat Lake • 90.1 Deer Lake", etc. Then a second section for "CIDE", same kind of list, and then a third section for the few stations that aren't actually either one of those. Not really much point having 15 or 20 different links to the same article in a single template.

The Kenora and Rainy River templates look fine, although we usually put the division's principal media market at the top and then alphabetize the remainder, so I'd move Kenora to list #1 in the Kenora District box. As to how many market infoboxes should be on an article, I'd actually only put the originating market now that there's that "Ontario Radio Markets" crossref at the bottom. Two would be livable, three is beginning to push it and four would just be overboard. (Did you ever see what the TVOntario article looked like before the TV templates were collapsible? It was quite a frightening sight, put it that way.) Bearcat (talk) 23:42, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

I think it's okay to waive the norm in a region whose context is so wildly different. Template:Brandon Radio, for example, is different because I'm not sure there are any other radio markets besides Brandon laying within a groupable division, and Template:Vancouver Island Radio has four sections with adjacent smaller (i.e. non-Victoria) cities grouped together, instead of nine sections of one-or-two-station lists. We can always vary the actual format of the template in cases where it results in a cleaner and more effective presentation than the "standard" format does. Oh, and by the way...one of my editing techniques lately (partly out of the fact that my attention span's going to pot now that winter and its accompanying blahs are coming, but also partly because it seems to get some things done faster) has been to take a closely related batch of articles and plug in quick stubs all at once, so that we at least have something that somebody, be it me or somebody else, can then improve and expand later on. Malton

Thanks for your note. Yes I know that Malton is actually part of Mississauga, I was just shortcutting it to prevent a repeat of the edits that substituted Milton for Malton as the site of the Victory (later Avro Canada) plants. Not to say that Malton warrants an edit war but an anon editor who contributed to the C.D. Howe article, substituted Milton for Malton twice with the further edit note that Malton did not exist: "Malton to Milton... Malton isn't even a place in Canada" which may be technically correct as it was formerly a village but now only exists as a neighbourhood. If you haven't been embroiled in an edit war yet, congratulations, but when they happen and they will for the simplest of reasons, they can be heated. FWIW Bzuk (talk) 03:38, 20 November 2007 (UTC).

Vidio, I noticed you mentioned Terry Fox, the subject of a manuscript that I wrote for the late-departed and -deceased Stoddart Publishing. It was actually my first book and when the company died, so did my childrens' book. Since then, other authors have taken up the cudgel and my manuscript has languished in the "what if... pile." I now have five publishers and two producers (the schizophrenic world of a writer and screenwriter) with concepts, projects and ideas scattered from here to the HewSaY and the UK, It's been a wild ride for seven plus years. Enjoy your maps, can you use standard colours?

Vidioman, as discussed on my Talk page, your maps are excellent. I have also used your "Territory" colours to highlight different types of terrain.

However, it is disappointing that you developed a new set of Vidioman-standard colours instead of using the semi-official ones at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Maps within English Wikipedia or the ones listed on Wikipedia Commons (which are standard on the French Wikipedia). Yours are excellent colours, but there is something to be said for standardizing throughout Wikipedia. Please consider, MapMaster (talk) 21:13, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

Hello Vidioman.
Just a very fast contact to let you know I'm aware about your discussion with MapMaster about maps colorimetric standards. I'm a Wikigraphist on WP-fr and I set the current standards used there.
I'm taking in consideration what you wrote about our standards and I pretend in the next, say, three months, to revise them in order to propose them in the Project Mapmaking Wiki Standards page for a general use. I will work on making them up trying to cover all the different types of maps used through the projects, as well as what's about roads and this kind of stuff.
Lot of work in perspective as it's a very big project, but I will try to propose something as achieved as possible so it can be set as standard for all and be easily accepted.

Yeah, you'd think...unfortunately they've kept their official photos under a licensing format that Wikipedia can't actually use. Oh, well, their loss, I guess. (That Tony Valeri pic was especially interesting as it dates from the Sheila Copps nomination battle in 2004, and was directly contrasted against Copps doing her best beleaguered Saint Sheila of the Harbour look.
