Hey there bro. You're doing great with Adventure and it looks like you've maybe actually got some of the book sources that you're reading. Unfortunately, in your quest to create the most pointlessly redundant sprawl of references and deliberately avoid order (Help:List-defined_references and Wikipedia:NAMEDREFS#WP:NAMEDREFS), you've doubly-duplicated one and made the duplicate wrong. You've double-listed The Game Design Reader: A Rules of Play Anthology as having been written by Warren Robinett, which it wasn't. My citation is correct. I've stepped away for now, so as to avoid editing conflicts today! Ha, I already did so with Susan Polgar; Adventure was my go-to article instead, but both articles have other enthusiasts hacking away today! That's generally a good problem to have! Thanks for the note. The book you're talking about is actually a collection of essays edited by Katie Salen (and Eric Zimmerman). The particular essay being used was written by Robinett. I have Salen and Zimmerman listed as editors in my reference. That essay is the same one I linked to on the talk page, to make it easier for others to check for more good info. I went ahead and removed the first reference in the lead, since the Easter egg source is already sourced that and in the body from other sources. On the footnotes issue, on the second page you linked, there is a section called Footnotes: page numbers, that explains two options for citing multiple pages from the same source. The first mentioned, Shortened footnotes, is the one I'm using. —Torchiest talkedits 21:28, 30 March 2014 (UTC)
Yeah I know about that old technique. Aside from the painfully obvious-at-a-glance fact that it sucks (totally unscalable, lacking in metadata, etc), I know why it sucks and why the superceding technique that I just cited doesn't suck, and thus why in this case it's actually a functionality issue and not actually a style issue. Additionally, I also know why (WP:OWNERSHIP) a person doesn't unilaterally undo a correct and complete edit, declaring simply by fiat that their method is what's happening.
Perhaps I would acquire some of these books you're mentioning. I have a book of poetry about Atari 2600 which I've never read. I should like to catch up on your learnings soon. By the way, see also the Wikipedia:WikiProject_Video_games/Retro_games which was recently declared inactive. I don't know anything about it particularly, but I'm a member and that's what I do, though I don't acknowledge the group yet. I don't think it's painfully obvious that shortened footnotes suck. The {{sfn}} template automatically merges duplicate footnotes, in essentially the same way as using a named ref tag does. Also, you can click on the footnote text to go directly to the full citation, so there's no loss of information. It is a matter of style preference. Many featured articles use the style I am using in that article. It is not deprecated, or those articles would be changed and the guides mentioning the use of shortened footnotes would be changed as well. On the issue of ownership, I will point you to WP:CITEVAR, and say that I added the shortened footnotes a little more than year ago, with no problems or complaints since.
Racing the Beam is an excellent book, and I would recommend getting it. I've used it to add information to a few Atari 2600 game articles, and it still has a lot of untapped information. WikiCup 2014 March newsletter

A quick update as we are half way through round two of this year's competition. WikiCup newcomer Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) (Pool E) leads, having produced a massive set of featured pictures for Silver certificate (United States), an article also brought to featured list status. Former finalist Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions) (Pool G) is in second, which he owes mostly to his work with historical images, including a number of images from Urania's Mirror, an article also brought to good status. 2010 champion (Pool C) is third overall, thanks to contributions relating to naval history, including the newly featured Japanese battleship Nagato. Rhodesia Cliftonian (submissions), who currently leads Pool A and is sixth overall, takes the title for the highest scoring individual article of the competition so far, with the top importance featured article Ian Smith.

With 26 people having already scored over 100 points, it is likely that well over 100 points will be needed to secure a place in round 3. Recent years have required 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) and 100 (2010). Remember that only 64 will progress to round 3 at the end of April. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page; if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Participation: Thanks to all who participated in the drive and helped out behind the scenes. 42 people signed up for this drive and 28 of these completed at least one article. Final results are available here.

Progress report: Articles tagged during the target months of December 2012 and January 2013 were reduced from 177 to 33, and the overall backlog was reduced by 13 articles. The total backlog was 2,902 articles at the end of March. On the Requests page during March, 26 copy edit requests were completed, all requests from January 2014 were completed, and the length of the queue was reduced by 11 articles.

National projects and businesses in the diaspora

Hi! I took a look at this edit to Mai's.

The owners of Mai's are Vietnamese. As a business owned by Vietnamese it's an example of the Asian American community. On top of that, isn't the Vietnam project covering the diaspora too? Many Asia-related projects cover their related diasporas. WhisperToMe (talk) 16:10, 21 April 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 April newsletter

Round 3 of the 2014 WikiCup has just begun; 32 competitors remain. Pool G's Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Round 2's highest scorer, with a large number of featured picture credits. In March/April, he restored star charts from Urania's Mirror, lithographs of various warships (such as SMS Gefion) and assorted other historical media. Second overall was Pool E's Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), whose featured list Silver certificate (United States) contains dozens of scans of banknotes recently promoted to featured picture status. Third was Pool G's United States ChrisGualtieri (submissions) who has produced a large number of good articles, many, including Falkner Island, on Connecticut-related topics. Other successful participants included Rhodesia Cliftonian (submissions), who saw three articles (including the top-importance Ian Smith) through featured article candidacies, and Washington, D.C. Caponer (submissions), who saw three lists (including the beautifully-illustrated list of plantations in West Virginia) through featured list candidacies. High-importance good articles promoted this round include narwhal from Canada Reid,iain james (submissions), tiger from Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and The Lion King from Minas Gerais Igordebraga (submissions). We also saw our first featured topic points of the competition, awarded to Nepal Czar (submissions) and Indiana Red Phoenix (submissions) for their work on the Sega Genesis topic. No points have been claimed so far for good topics or featured portals.

192 was our lowest qualifying score, again showing that this WikiCup is the most competitive ever. In previous years, 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) or 100 (2010) secured a place in Round 3. Pool H was the strongest performer, with all but one of its members advancing, while only the two highest scorers in Pools G and F advanced. At the end of June, 16 users will advance into the semi-finals. Hinduism and Jainism

Greetings. I really appreciate your input there; however, Bladesmulti continues to insist that because Shiva is the supreme god only for Shaivites, the sources do not invalidate his claim. Of course, this is patently false, but I have tried to change his mind for a while now, and I am getting absolutely nowhere. What would you suggest? I posted one more link, but that probably won't help all that much. The next step would be to ask for input from either WP:WikiProject India, WP:WikiProject Hinduism, or both. Thanks! It would appear that another editor boldly made the changes I wanted, which is not something I wanted to attempt thanks to a past history with Blades. I believe Bladesmulti was referring to my suggestion to get input from WikiProjects. However, I disagree with the suggestion that it wouldn't help. Input from uninvolved editors who are knowledgeable of and have an interest in the subject is exactly what we want. A larger discussion will help to sort things out and keep this from being a 1v1 editor dispute. I thought that was precisely what Bladesmulti wanted when they asked for a third opinion in the first place. This is just fourth, fifth, etc opinions. —Tourchiest talkedits 16:30, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
Calling a uninvolved editor(who has never edited the page) specifically, is the violation of WP:Canvassing. Simple! Furthermore Tourchiest hasn't rejected any of my assertion about Narayana being supreme god of hinduism, he only said that there are also other favorite gods for other sects. Have you read the canvassing guideline? Because it sounds as though your understanding of it is backwards. Making a neutral request for input at "The talk page of one or more articles, WikiProjects, or other Wikipedia collaborations directly related to the topic under discussion." is the first bullet point listed under the Appropriate notification section, making it exactly the opposite of a violation. Looks like you made some great changes to Dahn since my last visit. Unfortunately, they had been erased, but I did my best to restore them. I'll do my best to check in once in a while to see if it happens again, but I'm not that active here. If I figure out how to do that thing that warns people they're not allowed to just erase stuff and replace it with stuff from their own website, I'll try to get to that, too (if you know, I'd love the link). Since you linked to the talk page, I'm assuming you read my comments there. Essentially, the information was jumbled and inconsistent. The original source was dated March 29, 2007 and said 20 million units. I found the Tom's hardware link, which had a specific count for PC-only sales (6 million), and was dated March 21, 2012, so I thought it was more recent and precise, and therefore preferable. But I didn't use the PC-only number, because I wasn't sure if that was the consensus for figures or not, so I just used 13 million. Then I dug further and saw that it was based on another EA press release, with numbers just as confusing as those in the original link. Still, it was dated July 26, 2007, which made it more recent than the original source.
The other weird thing is that the March 2007 press release with 20 million units said 85 million total units across the franchise, and the July 2007 press release with 13 million units said 90 million total units across the franchise. Here is another press release from September 14, 2006 that says the game had sold 7 million units and 70 million total across the franchise. So the progression is 7→20→13 million on Sims 2, and 70→85→90 on total franchise. Something's clearly goofed up with their numbers, but I think the 20 million has to have been a misprint. There's no way they had a surge of 13 million copies of Sims 2 between September 2006 and March 2007, 2+ years after the game came out. Even the increase from 7 million (Sept 2006) to 13 million (July 2007) is hard to figure so late in the product cycle. I don't have a good solution other than what I originally did, which was to use the latest source from July 2007. I couldn't ever figure out how Tom's Hardware came up with the 6 million PC-only figure though. I'd support restoring the 13 million figure. —Torchiest talkedits 03:30, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
