WikiProject California roll call[edit]

Hello from WikiProject California!

As part of a recent update to our project main page we are conducting a roll call to check which members are still active and interested in working on California related content. If you are still interested in participating, simply move your username from the inactive section of the participant list to the active section. I hope you will find the redesigned project pages helpful, and I wanted to welcome you back to the project. If you want you can take a look at the newly redesigned:

As well as the existing pages:

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask at the project talk page, and add it to your watchlist, if it isn't already.

Again, hi! Optigan13 (talk) 00:15, 11 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rollback[edit]

I have granted you rollback feature. Please only use it for obvious vandalism. Rollback should never be a substitute for undos. Oh btw, I suggest you to upload free-media (like pictures) to Wikimedia Commons because if you upload the file here, it can only be used on this Wikipedia. If you upload it to Commons, every Wikipedia can use it. OhanaUnitedTalk page 14:48, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot. And in future I will, although I find the licensing easier to understand on Wikipedia rather than commons, but I shall try and wrap my head around it ;) Thanks again. Taifarious1 23:50, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Reciprocity[edit]

Just so you know, I'm a believer in pan-Pacific reciprocity. I've already mangled several pronunciations in Francis Petre and I probably know more about the New Zealand National Front than anyone else in North America. Thanks for your help on Los Angeles-related topics. ·:· Will Beback ·:· 12:25, 14 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The New Zealand National Front's policies, are, to be honest, horrendous ;) But I'm glad theres someone out there that knows NZ isn't just another part of Australia :) Taifarious1 21:46, 14 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WP:RUSSIA roll call and your input required[edit]

Privet. You are receiving this message as you were listed on the membership list of WP:RUSSIA at Wikipedia:WikiProject Russia/Members. Recent times has seen minimal activity within WikiProject Russia, and there is an attempt to re-invigorate the project and have it become more organised into a fully-fledge functioning project, with the aim of increasing the quality of Russia-related articles across English wikipedia.

As we don't know which listed members are active within the project and Russia-related article, all listed members are receiving this message, and are requested to re-affirm their active status on Russia-related article by re-adding their username to Wikipedia:WikiProject Russia/Members by adding # {{User|YOURUSERNAME}} to the membership list. You may also like to place {{User Russian Project}} on your userpage, as this will also place you in Category:WikiProject Russia members.

There is also an active proposal on the creation of a single WP:RUSSIA project. The proposal can be viewed at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Russia#Proposal_for_overhaul_and_creation_of_a_single_WP:RUSSIA_project, and your comments and suggestions are welcomed and encouraged at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Russia/Proposal.

We all look forward to your continued support of WP:RUSSIA and any comments you may have on the proposal. --Russavia Dialogue Stalk me 04:29, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image permission problem with Image:14468678 8eb3ed82d2 o.jpg[edit]

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:14468678 8eb3ed82d2 o.jpg. I noticed that that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, and proof that the creator of the image (or other media file) agreed to license it under the given license, there is no evidence that proof/relase was confrimed with the OTRS permissions queue.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the GFDL or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the image to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the image has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the image's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Images lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page.

British Empire[edit]

Hi. I notice you've added a substantial amount of new material to the article on the British Empire. Because the article covers a large number of countries over a period of about 500 years we are trying to limit how much space is devoted to any given country/period. I appreciate that what you have added is significant in NZ history, but is there any chance you could trim this down to 150-200 words? Thanks Wiki-Ed (talk) 11:05, 21 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I suppose I could do that, although it kind of defeats the purpose of an encyclopaedia, when you take out the encyclopaedic content in order to save space. And for future reference, India is mentioned 66 times in the article, France 36, Spain 24, America 53, Africa 39, Australia 20 and NZ only 24, so it looks like you have a lot of work to do. . . And I'll make sure to count my words this time. Apologies. . Taifarious1 11:13, 21 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Australia newsletter,December 2008[edit]

WikiProject Australia newsletter Issue 2, Volume 1December 16, 2008

Welcome! WikiProject Australia is a WikiProject, which aims to improve Wikipedia's coverage of Australia and Australia-related topics. This newsletter exists simply to notify Australian Wikipedians of ongoing events within the project and relating to Australia on Wikipedia.

200 GA Drive

Last year, an informal pact/commitment was made late in the year to aim for 100 good articles by the end of the year. As a result, a net increase of 24 GAs was achieved in December 2007 and the GA count hit triple figures, ending the year on 106 GAs. This year seasonally adjusted, the GA production has been slower than in last during the May-November periods (see graphs below). At the start of the month, our WikiProject had 178 good articles. Another GA Drive has been organised, with the hope of reaching the double century by the end of the year or Australia Day 2009 at the least. As of 16 December, there are 180 GAs and 15 currently nominated, primarily in response to the GA appeal. Everyone's help is requested to make the drive a success.

2008 Summer Olympics photo drive

Following the 2008 Summer Olympics, some Australian Wikipedians attended the various welcome home parades for the athletes, with one objective being to help create free images of the athletes. Previously, less than ten had photos. However, there are now over 100 athletes that do have photos, but unfortunately in some cases, they have not yet been identified. Help is requested for this purpose at the link above.

Wikimedia Australia

After much hard work in slogging through paperwork and government regulations, Wikimedia Australia was incorporated on 6 August, and membership was opened on 12 November. Its stated purpose is to be "an independent, not-for-profit organisation, whose primary aim is to promote equality of opportunity to access and participate in the collaborative creation of Free Cultural Works, especially educational works, and works about Australia, its culture, natural environment, and Australian news and media". It will be developing a joint publication with Creative Commons Australia, and members are in the process of spreading the Wikipedia message, with Wikipedia being introduced into the curriculum in some courses in Australia next year. The first AGM is planned for 11 January 2009.

Casliber

Well known Australian Wikipedian and polyglot FA writer Casliber, known for his writings on Australian wildlife among other things, has placed first in this year's arbitration election and appears certain to be appointed.

Quality watch

Mattinbgn is rather camera shy, so here is Harry Trott.

2008 saw a major feat for WikiProject Australia: 100 articles were promoted to featured article status. This is huge not only for the project's individual members and those who helped achieved such an impressive statistic, but for all of Wikipedia. Everyone involved has given readers from all around the world a chance to learn about Australia and relevant topics online from the best of sources. Congratulations to Mattinbgn, who wrote the 100th FA, Harry Trott. Also of note was the promotion of national icon Sir Donald Bradman, which then appeared as the main page FA on his 100th birthday. WikiProject Australia's maiden featured topics arrived early in the year, with Dream Days at the Hotel Existence and Powderfinger albums, both about the band Powderfinger. New South Wales and Music of Australia became featured portals. A further 13 featured lists have been produced.

Good articles

End of November 2008 statistics

Here are some statistics for WikiProject Australia in terms of 2008's good article and featured article promotions. Summing it up: 116 featured articles, and 178 good articles. So far this year, a net 36 FAs and 72 GAs have been added. The areas of FA growth were cricket (+12), military history (+7), swimming (+5), Powderfinger (+4), birds (+4), Silverchair (+2), Holden (+1), Wiggles (+1). These areas have been traditional strengths of the project, and this year, Abraham, B.S. has started another strong tradition, with a series of articles on Australian Victoria Cross awardees (1FA, 8GA). It would be great to see a wider range of Australian topics represented at FA in future. Two FAs were sent to Featured article review, but Bilby was instrumental in renovating and saving both Shrine of Remembrance and Waterfall Gully, South Australia.

Australian Inventions[edit]

I think the referencing is pretty good - if you have specific examples I'd love to see them. Regarding powered flight and the refrigerator, I think you might need to re-examione your pre-conceptions. Just because Hargrave didn't invent the fixed wing aeroplane doesnt mean what he created wasn't powered flight. Also, a large room that uses vapor compression to create ice inside is definitely refrigeration. Just because its not the device used to chill food in your kitchen doesnt mean its not a refrigerator. Your arguments are welcome, but I think you'll need to come up with something more concrete than your own idea of 'ambiguousness' which can be highly subjective. Mdw0 (talk) 07:07, 17 December 2008 (UTC) [reply]

Well going by that logic, New Zealand invented Nuclear Power, Nuclear weaponry, the Nuclear submarine because Earnest Rutherford split the atom. We laso invented the Trafalgar Class submarine and contrary to your claim that you invented the torpedo, false thanks to Hamilton's jet, the torpedo belongs to us. We also invented that egg beater so that must also mean we invented cake! Just because you invent something that has had a small bearing on later inventions, such as the Wright Brothers, who are the true pioneers of flight, doesn't mean you invented every subsequent achievement. Don't be naive. Taifarious1 07:25, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I suppose its up to you to back up those claims, then, isnt it? Looking over the article again I'm comfortable with the claims - the article doesnt say Hargrave invented flight, or the aeroplane. The claim is for powered flight, which is fairly specific, as per your request. The Wright Brothers have the fame, but you'll find there are lots of claimants of various types of flight before them. There are many supporters of the Wright Brothers in these matters, but the other claimants have their supporters too. If you can find someone who invented powered flight before Hargrave, lets hear it. And the refrigerator really is a refrigerator - what makes you think it isnt? I'm more than happy to adjust the text if I'm proven to be wrong - for instance, evidence came up for an earlier version of the ute in America, so that section was scratched. Mdw0 (talk) 22:34, 17 December 2008 (UTC) [reply]
Actually you'd have trouble with the nuclear claims primarily because you'd need to argue Rutherford was technically a New Zealander and not an emigre when he split the atom. He may have been born in New Zealand and done his undergraduate schooling at Christchurch, but let's face it, once he started at Cambridge he never lived in NZ again. All of his inventive and theoretical work was done in England and Canada, well after he left. If Rutherford had been born in Sydney I'd never claim such overseas inventions to be Australian. Mdw0 (talk) 00:15, 18 December 2008 (UTC) [reply]
Well in that case I suppose Heath Ledger wasn't really Australian because the vast majority of his films were American. That sort of logic is totally absurd. A person doesn't stop being a nationality because they live or work in another country. Taifarious1 00:54, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
What nationality Heath Ledger felt he was might be one thing, but no-one could claim the films were Australian. If someone emigrates for good and spends their entire adult lives away from New Zealand you'd have to make a case for their still being a New Zealander, but any work or discoveries they'd made in England while working in a team of English people and funded by English backers, would surely have to belong to England, not New Zealand. Mdw0 (talk) 01:16, 18 December 2008 (UTC) By the way, your list of 'Where I'd never go makes sense, although I wouldn't necessarily agree with it - but how come China and Hong Kong are OK but Macao and Mongolia aren't? And why is Oman on the blacklist but not the UAE?[reply]
Ah ha, because Macau stole the Sky Tower and made it slightly bigger so ours is now the pathetic version of theirs. And i'm not saying hos movies can claim to be Australian, i'm saying that since he lived almost his entire life in the US, couldn't, going by your logic, Americans claim him as their own. Taifarious1 01:26, 18 December 2008 (UTC) - And Oman isnt on there because it just seems like on of those places that you go to and someone detonated a bomb outside your hotel or something, stereotypical sure but not really a stretch of the imagination in this day and age. And the UAE is on there for 2 reasons, first, its a completely revolutionised country, tough on crime, big on investment, its like the Arab version of Singapore, the clean, safe part of the region, and secondly cause I had a friend that went there, said it was fantastic.[reply]
As I said the nationality of the person post-emigration may be debatable. I think Ledger bought a house in Sydney and came back often enough to qualify - someone like Rupert Murdoch you could say is now American. Reading over Rutherford's history I'd have to say he emigrated for good and wasn't a New Zealander by the time he'd split the atom and theorised neutrons. However, what I was saying is that you'd struggle to claim Rutherford's inventions or theories as New Zealander because he'd done all the work in England with an English team and English backing.
OK, Macao makes sense now - its a bit puerile and parochial but so are some of my motivations. But why is Mongolia no good while China is OK? You might want to watch out for the UAE - the terrorists really hate the moderate, open Muslims they see as collaborators, making Dubai a particular target. And if someone had a similar glowing revue of Oman, and their more welcoming attitude was publicised, might it come off the 'never' list? Never seems a bit extreme - you know what they say - never say never. You don't need to put all of Israel on the never list - I get sick of the militant Israeli attitude but I went to Jerusalem last year and it was absolutely magic. Mdw0 (talk) 01:52, 18 December 2008 (UTC) [reply]
I don't know why I don't like Mongolia, I remember years ago I saw this video of like these really poor people in Mongolia and I think that may have had something to so with it. And I didn't put Israel on there cause of all the conflict with Palestine etc. I put it on there cause of the Israeli-NZ spay scandal, the fact that they tried to spy on us made me really dislike the way they conduct their affairs. Same with France, sure it may be a really great place to visit, and I would love to go, cause I can speak French, but the Rainbow Warrior bombing really put me off, I mean, how many Americans do you see travelling to Afghanistan after 9/11?? Taifarious1 02:05, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I would never question why a New Zealander would have a problem with France. Still, maybe this should be a like/dont like list rather than a go/never go list. Sometimes contact means discussion and presentation of views, and in all these countries there are groups with differing views. A lot of French people have never heard of the Rainbow Warrior and need to be educated. The only contact they have with the Antipodes is via the rugby teams. Mdw0 (talk)

Metal Storm?[edit]

I'm tossing up whether I should include Mike O'Dwyers' Metal Storm ballistics technology in the List of Australian inventions. Does it count as an actual invention or just an innovation/redesign? He didnt invent superposed ballistics just redesigned the projectiles so that they recoiled and sealed in the process, preventing blowback along the barrell. The way some of the literature goes on you'd think it was the ultimate weapon. Any thoughts? Mdw0 (talk) 06:32, 19 December 2008 (UTC) [reply]

First off, I apologize for the spam. You are receiving this message because you have indicated that you are in Southern California or interested in Southern California topics (either via category or WikiProject, or I happen to know personally).

I would like to invite you to the Los Angeles edition of Wikipedia:Wikipedia Loves Art, a photography scavenger hunt to be held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) on Saturday, February 28, 2009, from 1:00 to 7:00 PM. All photos are intended for use in Wikipedia articles or on Wikimedia Commons. There will be a prize available for the person who gets the most photos on the list.

If you don't like art, why not come just to meet your fellow Wikipedians. Apparently, we haven't had a meetup in this area since June 2006!

If you are interested in attending, please add your name to Wikipedia:Wikipedia Loves Art#Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Please make a note if you are traveling to the area (train or plane) and need transportation, which can probably be arranged via carpool, but we need time to coordinate. Lodging is as of right now out of scope, but we could discuss that if enough people are interested.

Thank you and I hope to see you there! howcheng {chat} 00:31, 10 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
