Hey![edit]

Welcome back! We've got a pretty solid group of people keeping an eye on the articles nowadays, so things are generally in pretty good shape. User:Themodernizer has been doing a lot of screenshots for Vista, so expect to see his name a lot. Two articles I've written recently are Windows Security Center and Visual Studio Team System, and I'm planning on doing something similar for User Account Control in the coming weeks, and possibly Windows Server "Longhorn" as well. We should aim for getting an article up to FA status. :) -/- Warren 06:44, 17 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Alizee article[edit]

Hey soumyasch, good to see you around again. The suggestions you made for improving the article seem pretty good. Nobody has really been working on the article in months, so I don't think there are any editors who are really trying to take the article in any particular direction. At the moment I'm editing rather sporadically myself, but I try to get some editing done when I have time. While it is true that there is probably going to be a lot of new information coming out in the near future, I think polishing the article in its current state now is a good idea. I'll try to get some work done on it tomorrow (during the day I'm going skiing, but when I get back home I'll get started). See you around, JACOPLANE • 2007-02-17 19:32

Alizée songs[edit]

I'm going to merge all the articles like Mon Bain de mousse with their French version and redirect them. I hope you don't mind. BJTalk 15:06, 21 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Uh, never mind. The only one I'm going to merge is Mon Bain de mousse as the rest are singles. BJTalk 15:17, 21 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, go ahead. --soumসৌমোyasch 17:01, 21 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

URL Syntax[edit]

Heya, nice cleanup and referencing you did to the WinFS article. Just wanted to point out that when using external link redirection you don't need the pipe -- for some reason, it's the only wiki syntax I know of that uses a space. You just simply do something like [http://foo.com/bar.html text]. See this example.  :) /Blaxthos 09:11, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

SP1 whack-a-mole[edit]

Hey... the issue of whether Vista SP1 should have its own article keeps cropping up. Most recently there was Vista SP1 ("Fiji"), which was speedied, but the creator of the article put it up at WP:DRV, here. Figured you would like to know. -/- Warren 00:43, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WinFS[edit]

I removed the link you added from WinFS. I believe this violates WP:SPAM and WP:EL in that the link page provides no information that is not already in the article or that could be incorporated into the article. I'm not accusing you of spamming, I think the addition was done in good faith, but I believe the site does not meet our criteria. Thanks. --Yamla 16:34, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

While it is no way spam, it is true everything the link says is already in the article. It could be used as a reference though. But since everything is referenced (just not all are inline, I will look into that later), I did not see anywhere to put it. Anyway, lets keep the link off the article for now. :) --soumtalk 16:40, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey[edit]

The best option here would be for the user to create a new account. I don't think anyone would complain about that, assuming he doesn't use that account for vandalism. If this is unacceptable for some reason, the user should use the {{unblock}} template on his user discussion page to request an unblock review. Deliberately vandalising the Wikipedia is a big problem but it is probably reasonable to give the user a second chance if he promises not to vandalise again. --Yamla 17:04, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello[edit]

I was attracted by your note saying, “let me know if you need help with fmt”. I have not had occasion to contact you earlier. First, congratulations on your crossing the 5,000 edit mark. Your page says that that you belong to Balurghat. I have an interest in and work on the town pages. I am not very familiar with your area. There are two town pages – Balurghat and Gangarampur. Balurghat parliamentary seat has 7 assembly segments. Apart from Balurghat and Gangarampur, the other segments are: Kaliaganj, Kushmandi, Tapan, Kumarganj and Gajol. At some point or other people would be seeking information about these towns. Would you be able to add and develop pages about these towns? There could also be other towns in the area. Do you think that there should be more town pages? I shall be happy if you explore the possibility of expanding and improving the coverage of your area. With regards. - P.K.Niyogi 11:27, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Saw your message. Sorry, could not reply earlier as I was out of station for a few days. As you can see on my user page, that I am working on (or will shortly work on) the Balurghat article. As the backlog page says, the list of what I want to do has grown quite long :) As per the list, I will take up the Balurghat article, once I am done with the Alizée article.
Well, town and cities articles are not really my cup of tea. But I am interested in articles for Balurghat and others in Dakshin Dinajpur, as I am from there. I have enough information (and referencible material) for Balurghat, but I am afraid not enough for the rest (only what I know of, but me knowing is not referencible, is it?). But, we can definitely take up the articles and keep on improving and over time we will put references in those. As for the towns you mentioned, lets start the articles as a stub, and editors familiar with the area can chip in as they can. I could gather more information about them but my problem is that I wont be going home before May - so any serious work on those articles have to wait till then.
Also, what classifies a place as a town or a city? Indian Census Law classifies an area with a population of 5000+ as urban area. Also, 10,000+ population area as notified area, 20,000+ as town and having a municipal committee or a municipal corporation as a city. Balurghat does not have a municipal corporation, but has a municipal committee. So, can we say it is a city without any reference? Or do we need a copy of the official order before we can claim so? Have you any idea regarding this? I wish I were in Balurghat so I could resolve this immediately. :) Anyways, looking forward to a great collaboration with you. --soumtalk 04:05, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Nice to have your message. I am not really well conversed about what the difference is between a city and a town. You can follow the Census classification. I am marking smaller places as 'town', 'police station', 'community development block' and so on. All the assembly constituency towns will be police station towns. While I can get that your interests lie elesewhere, I look forward to your contribution in the town pages in your area. There is no hurry. You can take your time. There are very few Wikipedians who are using proper references for their work. As you have rightly pointed out, an individual's knowledge is not reference. With regards. -- P.K.Niyogi 13:14, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi[edit]

Hi! Thanks for your effort. Bye the wya, I was thinking the same thing (archiving) while waiting for the talk page to load completely! Will do it soon. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 18:01, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Now. it's great that you have uploaded those in FlickR. but alas! Wikipedia cannot use those. Copyright problem :) The photos rae all rights reserved! Either you have to release them under Creative commons license (Creative commons attribution [1]), which is available in FickR. Or you have to send me a mail explicitely giving permission that the photos can be used in Wikipedia. I shall forward that to Wikimedia Communication Committee, they will check the your permitting email, and then only the photos can be used! See Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. So, you can just email me explicitely stating that you give me th epermission to use the photos in Wikipedia (better still, you can give the flickR links of the photos). Or you youeself can tag the photos in FlickR with Creative Commons attribution license! Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 20:06, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Or you can upload the photos to wikipedia or commons, along with appropriate license tags. If you prefer to do so, do not forget to upload the toy train photos. --Dwaipayan (talk) 20:09, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ok I'll tell you later the photos needed here. For a start, you can begin with the toy train photos, and monastery/Buddha photos.--Dwaipayan (talk) 20:10, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Where are all these Buddhas located? The sitting Buddha, meditating Buddha etc? I mean which monastery or temple?--Dwaipayan (talk) 05:27, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bangla[edit]

Hi Soumyasch, this is Ragib. I'm active in both English and Bangla wikipedias. Since you are a Bengali, would you like to contribute to the Bangla wikipedia too? Right now, we have 15,400 articles there, but need more people to contribute regularly. Especially, we have a lack of editors from West Bengal, resulting in a somewhat lack of info/articles on WB.

To contribute there, all you need is unicode Bangla installed in your machine. We have integrated Bangla typing, so you don't need any special typing software. (Just tick the checkbox above the edit window ... you'd be in phonetic bangla mode).

Please let me know if you have any problems editing there.

Thanks in advance. --Ragib 20:16, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, you can definitely use other Bangla typing systems ... As for computing related articles, if you just start one by writing the technical terms in Bangla (like সার্ভার), that will be fine. We are building a technical term list in Bangla (taking info from standard lists available), so we can later convert them if necessary.
You can write about Atreyee river, Gauhar Khan, Simone Singh, The Atreyee English Medium School, Balurghat etc. Basically, we are planning a CD distro of 2000 articles by the end of the year, and computing related articles are quite scarce now. So, any help will be great.
My name is written in Bangla as রাগিব. --Ragib 20:48, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello My very first edit in Wikipedia, (though an avid reader for several years) and you blew it away in 2 minutes. I count myself as something of an old hand at collaborative software, but this took the biscuit. None of the external links you deleted today in the Microsoft Office Groove article are link spam IMHO. They may be commercial enterprises but they are key members of the Groove ecosystem without which Groove wouldn't be Groove. Dakshin Dinajpur[edit]

Thanks for the message. It is a good idea if you can rope in other editors for developing the pages for Dakshin Dinajpur towns. There is a shortage of people who are making serious referenced contributions. Most people add stray information, which may be useful but would not last in the long run. Thank you for the response. I've added my support. I have no problem with merging the questions—I also went through the hellish roller coaster we call RFA, so I can relate to the difficulty in answering these questions. You did fine, and considering your RFA is now at 76% support I'd say you'll pass, or get a close stalemate. Either way, you're admin material. Plant identification[edit]

Hi

You placed a picture of a flower on my talk page

which, although there are thousands of species of plants in the Asteraceae family, which this is. My educated guess would be that it is an Anthemis cultivar of which there are possibly tens or hundreds of. These are commonly known as Margeurite daisys. I would need much clearer detail of the leaves, soil situation, garden or field situation, flowering time and to examine the seeds to make a call even to species level. After that we could only guess at a possible cultivar. Sorry I cannot be more specific. Plant ID without a key and a specimen of flowers, fruit leaves and location is left to recognition and I only recognise it as a marguerite.

Thanks HelloMojo 13:38, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I saw that you expanded Interra Systems and added a few references. However, I do have to question your removal of the speedy deletion tags -- I don't see any notability asserted, and the only references you cited came from the company's website and from a company press release (none of which fulfill WP:N or WP:RS, not to mention WP:SPS). Can you please explain why you removed the tags since notability has yet to be asserted? Rockstar915 06:20, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like we were writing to each other at the same time. I do understand your reasonings, but I still don't see how it's notable... I would love to see some secondary sources. Otherwise, I can't imagine how it will pass the CSD. Rockstar915 06:22, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm... it's a tough call. Tell you what -- I'll go ahead and do some searches (I have access to LexisNexis) to help you try to come up with some secondary sources. My trade secrets are hardly secrets! I use Inkscape to recreate diagrams from scratch. You're a sysop![edit]

Hi, Soumyasch/archive 4, Congratulations on Becoming a Sysop!

Hey there. I'm pleased to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator! You've volunteered to do housekeeping duties that normal users sadly cannot participate in. Sysops can't do a lot of stuff: They can't delete pages just like that (except patent nonsense like "aojt9085yu8;3ou"), and they can't protect pages in an edit war they are involved in. But they can delete random junk, block anonymous vandals, delete pages listed on articles for deletion for more than 5 days (provided there's a consensus), protect pages when asked to, and keep the few protected pages that exist on Wikipedia up to date.

Almost anything you can do can be undone, but please take a look at The Administrators' how-to guide and the Administrators' reading list before you get started (although you should have read that during your candidacy ;). Take a look before experimenting with your powers. Also, please add Administrators' noticeboard to your watchlist, as there are always discussions/requests for admins there. If you have any questions drop me a message at My talk page. Have fun! =Nichalp «Talk»=

Maybe the <imagemap> extension is difficult to set than the {{click}} template. Jigs41793 (Talk) (Contribs) 22:40, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I will try it the <imagemap> extension. Jigs41793 (Talk) (Contribs) 22:42, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, its your discretion. :) --soum (0_o) 22:43, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The result is, its very difficult to use the <imagemap> extension. Take a look at my Sandbox page, there's an error on it. Maybe I will use the {{click}} template. Jigs41793 (Talk) (Contribs) 22:54, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, whatever you feel more comfortable with. --soum (0_o) 22:57, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Congrats on the successful RfA[edit]

Well, the header pretty much says it all ;-)  ~Steptrip 20:07, 7 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Ok, I have added it to my watchlist. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 05:09, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Windows Vista Flip 2D[edit]

Here is a screenshoot of the Windows Vista article where the images are an issue. OSX 07:30, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ohk, I have tried a fix. Please let me know if the issue persists. --soum (0_o) 08:24, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that, problem gone. You can delete the image if you want, it serves no purpose. I only uploaded it so you could see the issue I had with the layout, as can be seen from my poor spelling in the image title. Regards OSX 10:57, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Done. :) --soum (0_o) 10:59, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good article[edit]

Thank you for reviewing Search engine optimization and promoting it to good article! Jehochman (Talk/Contrib) 20:28, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The article got promoted on its own merits. :) Good luck. --soum (0_o) 20:30, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Windows Vista iPod incompatability[edit]

I understande what you said about the article not being there, but i beleave it should be there, beaucase this is a problem in windows vista, NOT iTunes, or iPod. And considering the fact that iPod is the most popular MP3 player in the world and Windows the most popular oporating system, there are bound to be many instances of this problem. I explained in symple words how to fix the problem and the cause of it, when this happened to me i had to spend 3 hours on the phone to apple and microsoft, if i had found a website (and beleave me i looked)that told me what to do it would have saved me alot of time. In the end apple confirmed that the drivers were in windows drivers folder, but for some strange reason it was not finding them. This means that it had nothing todo with iTunes, beacuse thease drivers come on the vista disk. This is why I think that this article does belong in the windows vista article; beacuse it will save many peoples time, beacuse it is a problem in windows not iTunes, and beaucse it solves the problem, which is more than any of the other critisisums of vista do. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zanorath (talkcontribs)

Welcome...[edit]

Welcome!

Hi, and welcome to the India WikiProject! We're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of India.

A few features that you might find helpful:

There are a variety of interesting things to do within the project; you're free to participate however much—or little—you like:

  • Want to know how good our articles are? The assessment department is working on rating the quality of every India article in Wikipedia.
  • Can you code? The automation department uses automated and semi-automated methods to perform batch tasks that would be tedious to do manually.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask another fellow member, and we'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome! We look forward to seeing you around! — Lost(talk) 17:12, 10 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Vista TCP[edit]

Sorry about that; set the article right. Turns out I was reading an older version of the spec which didn't use slow start or fast retransmit, and just halved the window on a missed packet. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 83.67.4.159 (talk) 18:12, 10 April 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Farthest Star[edit]

I restored Farthest Star -- it is a book by two noted science fiction authors. I've added wikilinks and categories. NawlinWiki 20:59, 10 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That works for me, but if you do that, I would redirect the individual book articles to Saga of Cuckoo rather than deleting them. Apparently the books have some incoming links. NawlinWiki 21:06, 10 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

AWB malfunction[edit]

Hello, I just wanted to let you know that this was an incorrect edit, but I've wrapped the text in <nowiki> tags to prevent such malfunctions in the future. – Mipadi 23:22, 10 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Trivial AWB edits[edit]

Please refrain from making trivial edits with AWB, such as this and this. You're just clogging users' watchlists for no good reason; the AWB guide specifically states "Avoid making insignificant minor edits such as only: * Adding or removing some white space * Moving a stub tag or category name" As you are expected to have read the guide before registering, continued violation of it may get your AWB access revoked. (And apparently I'm not the only person complaining) -- intgr 07:22, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
