Phew! Thanks for persisting in asking me to stand, I'm sure I'd have never got around to it on my own.   • The version in your userspace is a bit short on stating the basic facts. We generally expect biographies to state date of birth and nationality in the first sentence.

    I don't think the deletion was wrong, but as DGG rightly says, there's nothing to prevent you from creating a fresh article in that space, provided it's substantially different (and, I would suggest in this case, less promotional).—S Marshall Talk/Cont 01:26, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

I contributed to Gymnasium (Germany), but english is my third language, so I fear there might be a lot of grammatical errors. I also struggled translating one sentence. Thank you :). There is a few points I'd like to mention.
  • 1. There are some sentences I struggled translating.
A newspaper had Mr. Harnischfeger, headmaster of a well-known German Gymnasium talk to Mr. Zillich a politician who thinks Gymnasien should have quotas.
Said Mr. Harnischfeger: "Sie wollen das Gymnasium gewissermaßen heimlich abschaffen, in dem sie es schwächen. Unsere Gesellschaft kann es sich nicht leisten, auf Spitzenleistung zu verzichten." I was unsure how to translate this. I wanted a translation as close to his true words as possible and he has a funny way of talking. My translation was He also said that "this kind of policy would weaken the Gymnasium" and that this would be dangerous because "German society could not afford to do without the excellence the Gymnasium produces", but that was not was good one, because actually he said not that this would weaken the Gymnasium, but that they wanted to abolish it by weakening it (which sounds funny to me) and I am also not sure about that Spitzenleistung, that would translate to excellence, but I think excellence cannot exists on it own... it must exist in a person, most likely the young person the Gymnasium produces. But if I would say this would that translation still correct? He does not mention that young person. I only think that he his him or her in mind.
Mr. Zillich answered: Unsere Gesellschaft kann es nicht leisten, nur auf so wenig Spitzenleistung zu kommen. I translated German society can not afford having only so few adults who were truly educated. Same problem again. He did not mention truly educated adults, but excellence. So I am not sure if that translation is right.
  • 2. Students at a Gymnasium are required to attend religious education classes or ethics classes. That is aslo true for statefunded schools People, who know our constitution, but don't know our school system say "How can that be. The German constition states that there is a "Trennung von Staat und Kirche" (do not know how to translate it), but thaat still is okay with our cionstitution, because 1) you are required to attend these classes, but you are not required to attend say "catholic religious education classes" instead you can choose, if you want to attend catholic, protestant or jewish ones, or choose ethics. So you are required to attend one of those classes, but you can choose which one. and 2) you don't have to attend a Gymnasium. Comprehensives does not require you to attend those classes as far as I know
  • 3. I wrote something about the Humanistisches Gymnasium and that it had is focus on the Classical antiquity and so on. While this is true of course it also teaches mathematics, physics, chemistry and so on. I am not sure if I should mention it. This would be very clear to a person from Germany, but may be a person from another country, who does not know our system, will be lead to think the Humanistisches Gymnasium will only deal with the antiquity. Same holds true for the "neusprachliches Gymnasium" wich of course does not only teach modern languages, but also mathematics, physics and so on.
  • 4. We have a debate going on in our country if Gymnasien should be abolished in favour of comprenhensive schools. We already have comprenhensive schools alongside with Gymnasien, but some people think the latter should be abolished, because they are the breedingground for privilege. Others want to keep them. People usually have strong opinions about this and so do I. However I wanted to prensent both sides of it in a fair light. Do you think that I was successful in doing so?
  • 5. Have all of the questions you might have about that school by answered by the article?

    Your translation of Mr Harnischfeger's remarks is about as good as you'll get in English. A more accurate translation would sound very strange (as indeed it does in German), and I think clarity is better than strict adherence to the wording. "Excellence" is an appropriate word and makes perfect sense in English.

    I would translate Mr Zillich's remarks into English idiom as: Our society cannot afford to have so few adults with a world-class education.

    "Trennung von Staat und Kirche" translates (simply enough) as "Separation between church and state". Most English or American readers would be very familiar with that phrase, and the US constitution includes the same provision. (There is no English constitution, and our head of state—Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II—is also the nominal head of the Church of England, so we see things rather differently, but many Englishmen agree with the Germans on this.)

    I would phrase what you are trying to express, in English, as: Classes in religion or ethics are compulsory in a Gymnasium, but the student may choose which specific religion, if any, is studied.

    On your third point, in the English system schools tend to specialise. So my son goes to a "Science college", where he learns every subject on the national curriculum; the phrase "Science college" means that the school is a centre of excellence for science, but it teaches other things as well. I think that the article would be clear to English-speaking readers as you have written it.

    On your fourth point, I do want to spend a bit more time looking at the article to see that it keeps to a strictly neutral point of view. I may tweak some phrases here and there.

    On your fifth point, I'm afraid I'm the wrong person to ask, because I already understood what a Gymnasium was before reading the article. I think it would be best to ask someone who is completely unfamiliar with the concept.

    I will work more on the article shortly, but may not get to it until tomorrow now.

Thank you :). I did not do it alone, but there was a short article before and other Wikipedians as well as my girlfriend and my Mitbewohner have helped me with the words and the grammar. I learned so much about other cultures from the english Wikipedia and i realized that many people out there have wrong assumptions about our Gymnasium (like they think that it is the only way to college or that it is way expensive or that you have to do an IQ-test in order to be admitted) and so I thought someone should tell them what it is really like and I gave it a try...
but it is a little bit complicated, while Gymnasien are so very different. I hope that the article is okay nevertheless.
I did not know that you had "Science colleges". I used to think: "Other countries have comprenhensives. Period." and I think that is the way many Germans see it. It was only because of Wikipedia that I realized that there were prep schools in America and now you told me you english had those Science colleges. That's really interesting for me.
Anyway I really appreciate your proofreading and wanted you to thank you for it and hope it is not to much work. I remain respectfully yours By they way. Does one still say so? Me again. Added other stuff (this is addicting), but I am finally done yet. I struggled translating a paragraph that read: Die Verteilung der Motivationsäußerungen auf Schulformen dürfte schichtspezifische Hintergründe haben, die durchaus erforschenswert wären, vor allem in ihrer Relevanz zum tatsächlichen sozialen Handeln. Warum wohl halten sich die Vertreter altruistischen Denkens im Gymnasium sowohl vom gemeinsamen Lernen mit Ausländerkindern wie von der Integration Behinderter weitgehend fern und ertragen es, daß jährlich über hunderttausend ihresgleichen sitzenbleiben oder auf andere Schulformen zwangsabgestuft werden? "Elitär" is mostly a negativ word, suggesting that you think the group of people you belong to is better than other groups of people.
