Orphaned non-free media (Image:790KABC.gif)

Thanks for uploading Image:790KABC.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:26, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Mervyndymally.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Calliopejen1 (talk) 20:38, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

Members of the California State Legislature

There is a mistake. It has Jack Scott going 6 years in the Assembly and Carol Liu going 4 years in the Assembly while it is actually vice versa. Every time I try to fix it, I end up screwing up the chart entirely, you seem to be a frequent updater of the chart, could you possibly fix it. Its bugging me!! Thank you!! Have a good day! Capoliticswatcher (talk) 07:38, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

I've fixed it. Thanks for letting me know! OCNative (talk) 04:13, 5 December 2008 (UTC)

Tenure of service

This is very well done, but I have a question. Should the background colour for the senators be different? I can hardly differenciate it from the grey of the background. I have a weakness in seeing colour though, so that could be the reason. Perhaps consider? Hekerui (talk) 14:56, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

I just wanted to second that; it really is very well done indeed. I've made a couple of changes which I hope you'll agree have served to improve it – let me know if you disagree with any of them.
Thanks for all your improvements to California Legislative LGBT Caucus – I think we've managed to make it a pretty decent article. — Lincolnite (talk) 23:21, 21 December 2008 (UTC)
Hi, Hekerui, I was trying to use the red and green colors since those are the colors of the Senate and Assembly, but I think Lincolnite's inserting the word Assembly and Senate solves the problem. Thanks for pointing that out; I'll be more careful about that in future charts. OCNative (talk) 02:36, 25 December 2008 (UTC)
Hi, Lincolnite, thank you for your improvements to my chart. Your changes provide more information, make the table more uniform in spacing, and fix the color issue (by including the words Assembly and Senate under the legislator's name) that Hekerui pointed out. Orphaned non-free image (File:SIIS.jpg)

You've uploaded File:SIIS.jpg, and indicated that it's used under Wikipedia's rules for non-free images. However, it's not presently used in any articles. Wikipedia policy requires that non-free images be either used or deleted, so if this image isn't used in an article in the next week, it will be deleted.

First off, I apologize for the spam. You are receiving this message because you have indicated that you are in Southern California or interested in Southern California topics (either via category or WikiProject).

I would like to invite you to the Los Angeles edition of Wikipedia:Wikipedia Loves Art, a photography scavenger hunt to be held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) on Saturday, February 28, 2009, from 1:00 to 7:00 PM. All photos are intended for use in Wikipedia articles or on Wikimedia Commons. There will be a prize available for the person who gets the most photos on the list.

If you don't like art, why not come just to meet your fellow Wikipedians. Apparently, we haven't had a meetup in this area since June 2006!

If you are interested in attending, please add your name to Wikipedia:Wikipedia Loves Art#Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Please make a note if you are traveling to the area (train or plane) and need transportation, which can probably be arranged via carpool, but we need time to coordinate. Lodging is as of right now out of scope, but we could discuss that if enough people are interested.

Thank you and I hope to see you there! howcheng {chat} 00:16, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

List of United States Presidents by military rank

Thanks for the improvements to List of United States Presidents by military rank. Commenting out the unused naval ranks definitely makes the article look neater. And the improvements to the text work well. I did switch the year hyphens to &ndash per WP:DASH. Personally, I agree it is a pain to type and the longer dash looks odd, but I figured I would clean it up before some policy nutjob throws a wikifit. :) — MrDolomite • Talk 14:36, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for File:CulbertOlson.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:CulbertOlson.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Editing style

[moved here from an article talk page]
Please also note that you rarely use edit summaries, and you frequently mark substantive edits as 'minor'. That's not the path to success here. Wasted Time R (talk) 11:23, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

Also, if you wish to criticize my editing in a general sense, I would appreciate if you would do so on my talk page, rather than an article talk page. While I do not always use edit summaries, I would say "rarely" is an inaccurate statement. On occasion, I have accidentally marked an edit as "minor" that should not have been, but I would hardly call it "frequent". I've been editing here for more than four years without any major problems, so I'm not particularly worried about endangering my "path to success here." OCNative (talk) 05:42, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
Looking at your last 500 edits, you seem to use edit summaries about 20% of the time. That's what I meant by "rare". The recommended level per WP:FILLINEDITSUMMARY is 100%. For some examples of recent 'minor' edits that changed substance, see here and here and here and here and here and here and here and so forth. Wasted Time R (talk) 11:22, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

This being said, I have no desire to inject drama where it need not occur, so I'll retract my remark about "path to success here." Wasted Time R (talk) 11:53, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

As a separate matter, your desire to have autoformatted dates in articles is swimming upstream at this point. Many editors are removing them from articles on an individual basis, pointing to MOS:UNLINKDATES. If you want to keep them in a particular article, you should probably put a comment at the top saying "This article deliberately uses autoformatted dates, please don't change" or something like that. I personally have been removing them, but will be happy to honor such a request if it occurs. On the article in question, I've added in some additional autoformatting that you missed on your run-through. Wasted Time R (talk) 11:53, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

Just to let you know that I recently copied the above image that you uploaded to Wikipedia over to WikiMedia Commons, the Wikimedia central media repository for all free media. The image was either individually tagged or was in a category tagged with the {{Copy to Wikimedia Commons}} template. Your image is now available to all Wikimedia projects at the following location: Commons:File:Bush Blair Ahern in Northern Ireland 2003.jpg. During the move I changed the name of the image to better reflect Naming Conventions policy, duplicate file name and/or Commons naming restrictions. Any links to the image has been updated to reflect the new name as it exists now on Commons. The original version of the image uploaded to Wikipedia has been tagged with WP:CSD#F8. File:ThomasKuchel.jpg needs authorship information.

Dear uploader:

The media file you uploaded as File:ThomasKuchel.jpg is missing information as to it's authorship, or if such information is provided it is confusing.

If possible, please add or clarify this information. This will help other editors to make better use of the image, and it will be more informative for readers.

When adding authorship information to self published work please do NOT use describers such as 'I made this', 'own-work' , 'self-made' or personal names, without making your user name explicit.

This is so that media can be more accurately traced, if it is transferred to Wikimedia Commons.

If you have any questions please see Help:Image page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 23:53, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

This list is more comprehensive: http://www.parliament.uk/mps-lords-and-offices/government-holding/ Under your world, I guess we should confine ourselves to separate countries rather than recognizing that Wikipedia is a global encyclopedia and that in the Internet era, it's actually possible to learn of information across national borders. Furthermore, since there is an 8-hour time difference, I was able to watch the live streaming video of BBC while most Britons were asleep, and by the time I went to sleep, British Wikipedia editors could take over. Of course, you a person of a mere 9 edits would not understand the collaborative nature of Wikipedia and would make the snarky comments above. OCNative (talk) 17:58, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.

Style for date ranges (spaces vs. no spaces)

Sorry to nitpick, but I've noticed (Edit 1, Edit 2) that you don't like spaces around the dash in date ranges. E.g., you prefer "July 1, 1990-May 23, 2004" over "July 1, 1990 - May 23, 2004". I appreciate that the former is the style recommended by many writing guides, but the spaced-out version is, for better or worse, the style that is used on every biography on Wikipedia; cf. Albert Einstein, John F. Kennedy, George Carlin, etc.

Again, sorry to nitpick, and thanks for your help improving Wikipedia!

Fair use rationale for File:CCYoung.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:CCYoung.jpg.

Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 13:51, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

Pac-10 football

OCNative, I saw some more of your recent edits. Thanks for getting 2006 Stanford Cardinal football team started. I made an edit in the lead of the article to rephrase "college football season of 2006–2007" with simply 2006 NCAA Division I FBS football season. I know a lot of the season articles around phrase the season as XXXX–XXXX+1, but it's a bad practice because the convention has been to define the college season by the year in which it starts and in which almost all of its games are played. Also, I saw you created Category:2006 Pacific-10 football season. Those categories should probably be of the form Category:2006 Pacific-10 Conference football season. If you create more, can you go with that form? I can see about getting the existing ones moved. Jweiss11 (talk) 03:38, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

  • Thanks for letting me know that there is a standard on this. I had just copy-and-pasted the 2007 stuff over. I'll follow the standard. OCNative (talk) 06:28, 28 October 2010 (UTC)
    • Some of the standards are still a bit of a work in progress. If you see something systemic that doesn't make sense or you think could be better, definitely feel free to drop me a line about it or bring it up at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject College football. Thanks. Jweiss11 (talk) 07:04, 28 October 2010 (UTC)

Completing the list of USC Trojans football seasons

I noticed you were among the listed participants in the College Football WikiProject who are interested in Trojans football. I've been recently cataloging seasons for USC using the "USC Trojans under [coach]" article standard and was wondering if you would be willing to help fill in the rest of the seasons. There are around 55 seasons in need of an article (including some national championship seasons), and four active users on the WikiProject who listed USC as their interest. I figure if we split things up evenly, it shouldn't take too long. If you're interested, we could start doling out seasons and get cracking.

Thanks for your time ― El Cid 01:38, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for your response. It's cool if you have other stuff in your queue, so go ahead and choose whatever coach you'd like to do the seasons for and take however much time you need. If you'd like something short and simple, he shortest coach tenures available are Don Clark (57-59), Ralph Glaze (14-15), and Dean Cromwell (09-10, 16-18). If you do Cromwell just copy and paste the tables from the Methodist era for his first two seasons and mention the break in his tenure like how it's handled in the John Robinson article.
So just mention what era(s) you'd like to tackle and I'll steer clear of those seasons. Thanks a lot for your help. ― El Cid 19:43, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for creating the Jess Hill and Don Clark articles. It inspired me to get off my ass (or at least direct the time while on my ass) and finish the John McKay article. Good job, and again thanks for your help! ― El Cid 20:07, 13 January 2011 (UTC)

Big Game results table

Check out my comments on Talk:Big Game (football). I appreciate your acting boldly, but I gotta disagree--the brightly-colored table just looks way too garish and is hard to read--in my opinion of course. Can we explore some other options? I suggested we might want to open up a discussion to develop a standard on WP:CFB, whaddya think? I suppose that might take forever, but it would be nice to have a standard look to all these kinds of tables as they are all over the map. --Esprqii (talk) 17:16, 19 December 2010 (UTC)

I have responded at Talk:Big Game (football)#Results table. There does appear to be a standard that is used by 79% of the 48 rivalry game articles I surveyed. OCNative (talk) 06:01, 21 December 2010 (UTC)

I'm curious about why you reverted the changes regarding the membership changes sections, specifically the reversion of the party/district/residence back to the original. You didn't provide an edit summary, making it hard to discern your intentions. --kurykh 09:49, 21 December 2010 (UTC)

Sorry about the delay in responding, I took a wikivacation during the holidays. The original seemed to be a consensus standard that had been adopted quite a while ago. Additionally, I saw the original format in other states' pages, like the 58th Utah State Legislature, the Kentucky General Assembly, and the Michigan House of Representatives. OCNative (talk) 11:33, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
If it is a standard, it seems like a deficient one. In any case, the California legislature pages seem to be the most well-kept of the legislature pages that I've happened upon, and I think that these pages can help set new standards for other pages to follow. --kurykh (talk) 04:13, 2 January 2011 (UTC)

Structure for CA Legislature Boxes?

I wanted to see if you have suggestions. I want to fix the "succession-box" info in the leg. Lots of people are missing them. But then I noticed that there are sometimes a "sucession box" and sometimes a "incumbent box" and sometimes an "S-box". Do you have suggestions for which templates should be used or which would be better?

cheers - RayKiddy (talk) 05:22, 22 December 2010 (UTC)

Your information about the 3 types of boxes here makes sense. I notice you are saying which seems to be used and not which _should_ be used. But it does not seem very clear. I am working myself up to having a database of the members of the CA legislature. Actually, I have them for another project, a web application. And I am thinking of writing something which outputs a list of succession boxes. Then I would be able to check whether the info on WP is current, or if mine is wrong, or whichever it turns out to be.

If you have suggestions, I would be pleased to hear them.

RayKiddy (talk) 21:13, 1 January 2011 (UTC)

Sorry to butt in, but the reason why there are three types of boxes seems to be that there was some transition phase from the succession and incumbent templates (the original templates) to the S-boxes (the newer ones) a while ago, but the transition was aborted for some reason. Therefore, there is an inconsistency regarding the use of the boxes. Theoretically, one can go through all 120 articles (plus more if former members are counted) and change them to one standard (either way), although it might entail lots of work and potentially needless disruption. --kurykh (talk) 04:18, 2 January 2011 (UTC)

Turning Ten

On Saturday January 15, 2011, Wikipedia will turn 10 years and people all over the globe will be celebrating Wikipedia on that day. No event is currently planned for Orange County Wikipedians, so I am leaving a message with some of the currently involved editors listed in "Wikipedians in Orange County, California" to see if we might want to meet on that day, lunch, dinner, group photo or other ideas welcomed? I will start a "Turning Ten" discussion thread on my Talk page to see if any interest can be planned for and determined. I am located in Old Towne Orange off the circle.Tinkermen (talk) 19:45, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

Andrew Luck

Since Luck is listed on Wikipedia as a football player, the label for his class ("junior", "senior") depends on his football status, not his academic status. Please refrain from this kind of edits. —bender235 (talk) 07:22, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

For accuracy, then that label is not junior for 2011: it is redshirt junior. OCNative (talk) 08:33, 7 January 2011 (UTC)
