DEMOCRACY Rourke, J. & M. Boyer, World Politics: International Politics on the World stage, Brief. Dushkin/McGraw-Hill, 1998, pp. 144-145.

• “…Standards of Democracy. There are a number of ramifications of democracy that make it of interest to us here. One of these is that some countries, such as the United States, use democracy as a standard to judge other governments. • …There are, however, several difficulties with insisting that countries be democratic. One issue is that it is not always clear what is democratic and what is not. There are, for example, standards of procedural democracy and substantive democracy. Americans, Canadians, Western Europeans, and some others tend to equate democracy with procedure. If citizens periodically chose among competing candidates and follow other such procedures, then there is democracy. • Many other cultures in the world view democracy as a substantive product associated with equality. Critics of American-style democracy comment, for example about the gulf between standards of living in places such as Hollywood and the Watts section of Los Angeles, just a few miles away. Critics suggest that you have failed democratically if, despite meeting procedural requisites, your democracy produces a perpetual racial, ethnic, or gender socioeconomic underclass. Such a system, they contend, goes through the motions of democracy while, in the end, denying the most important part of democracy: the substantive human right to equality. • Critics further argue that a system, such as capitalism, of vastly different economic circumstances is inherently undemocratic because the theory of free speech or the right to petition the government for the redress of grievances is undercut by the ability of wealthy individuals, groups, and corporations to spend large sums to hire professional lobbyists, to wage public relations campaigns, to donate money to electoral campaigns, to pay attorneys to sue opponents in court, and otherwise to use economic muscle unavailable to most citizens. This, the critics say, makes the contest unfair and undemocratic, no matter what the theory may be.”

RE:Help[edit]

On the find a User page I think someone vandlised it can you tell me hoe to restore it or help me thanks.2:16 1 august 2006

I don't quite follow what you mean. I see originally you created a page about yourself in the mainspace (i.e. in the encyclopedia) and it was correctly deleted. Your user page is here, and this is where you can put information about yourself. --Wisden17 18:19, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh I see. Nobody vandalised it, this is just a list of all registered names on Wikipedia. There are some "rude things" on it, but those names which breach WP:U are banned from editing, but there account will still be in that list. Why exactly are you looking at that list, it jsut seems an odd thing to be doing. Are you trying to find something in particular, if so do you need a hand? --Wisden17 18:22, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
To sign your entries you should simply copy and paste your name, you should use ~~~~ to sign your entries, and date them. --Wisden17 18:24, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh ok. Rememebr to sign your posts as I said above, take a look at the welcome pages for my basic info. If you need any further help just let me know. --Wisden17 18:29, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Help tag[edit]

I see you've placed the helpme tag on your userspace. What do you need help with? -- Merope 16:02, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There's no way to cut and paste pictures. Images must be uploaded to the server, and then you can use a tag (for example, [[Image:Example.jpg]]) to place the image within the article. You can find instructions and guidelines about images here. The upload link is in the toolbox to the right of the screen, or you can click here. Hope that helps! -- Merope 12:40, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
