Location change (and reservations made) for DC meetup[edit]

I stopped by TGI Friday's this evening and was less than impressed. They apparently don't take reservations, except perhaps if you call 24 hours ahead of time. The staff was not so helpful, and the menu has hardly anything vegetarian which is an issue for some people.

So, I checked out the Bertucci's pizza/Italian place across the street (21st & I St NW). Their staff couldn't have been more helpful, and think it will be fairly quiet so we will be able to hear each other. So, reservations are made for Bertucci's at 5pm on Saturday. --Aude (talk) 02:42, 2 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

D.C. Meetup, Saturday, June 6, 2009[edit]

New site design?[edit]

(just a heads-up that I posted this same message on Michael Snow's page several days ago, but haven't gotten a reply yet, so I'm popping it here too)
Hi there. I was just wondering if Wikimedia has any intent to (significantly) update Wikipedia's design anytime soon, because I live and breathe this kind of thing (software, interface, and website design), and have been thinking about the kind of design philosophy that would help the editing experience in particular be able to reach people of the third-world, and be accessible/inviting (<key word there: actually *inviting*, not just "easy") to non-tech-savvy users in general... (without developing an interface that requires endless bandwidth). And, of course, the look/layout of the site. Anyway, you can see what I do here (software design stuff at the bottom - And not shown is a new editing interface for forums that use SMF (preview image) that is currently being discussed by the SMF devs, and might become the standard for SMF2 forums. - Here's the thread where I first posted it), and if you're curious, I can mock up a Photoshop comp (preview) of a new Wikipedia look (way more than just a skin), so you can see if you wanna mess around with the idea. If you do, I would do all this for free until work actually got started (in other words, free during the design phase), then just collect some dough upon completion. (so you understand I wouldn't be trying to get myself into something that I would try to make drag on for eternity, for more dough. That's totally not me.) Otherwise, if you guys aren't interested for the time being, that's fine. Either way, my email is dario@deefrag.com ... Take care! - Update: Oh, and I just read an article saying that you guys got a huge grant to work on this very thing (at least the editing aspects of it). Sounds exciting.--[ Dario D. ] 01:13, 21 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Help plz[edit]

Hi, ive already told this in stu's discussion and copied to wing discussion, but i beg fot all the help possible: )== HI == Im really really sorry for bother you here, i know u must got a more important business, however i repeatly have been object of abuse of authority in es.wikipedia. They ban me now, saying that im a problematic user, a user i have never talk to. The last ban is because, i created a new article: http://es.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Latinoam%C3%A9rica_en_la_crisis_actual&action=edit&redlink=1 . An user named Amadis, http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usuario:Amad%C3%ADs , deleted saying that i copyvio and totally copy a page from a forum: http://razonyfuerza.mforos.com/549918/8559668-crisis-de-la-economia-mundial/ . However this is the story: I have been collaborating to an article "crisis economica del 2008 - 2009" however, i felt that current latinoamerica's situation didnt fit well in the article. So i passed all the referenced information I PUT ON THAT PAGE and create a new one: Latinoamerica en la crisis actual. I have to say that my article was created in march 2009, that the crisis started in 2008, but they say i copyvio an article created in 2005! That's not true, those forums copied my articles! And i told him, like I explain here: http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usuario_Discusi%C3%B3n:Amad%C3%ADs#Disculpa.3F.3F.3F . Not only he didnt answer me, but it made that his friends ban me. I put an anouncement because i thought it must be an error, however they have ban me for being a problematic user. They will tell you a lot of things, because they didnt like me, but i have all the proof, and this is not the first time it happens, I went to en.wikipedia to look for help. This are all the answer for everthng i thought, and the apologies for the mistakes i made mostly because they never answer when i look for help: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Griffinofwales/Archive_1#Momoelf This are Griffinowales opinions: http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usuario_Discusi%C3%B3n:Griffinofwales.

This stress my a lot. Firstly i really contributes and i can proof it: http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Especial:Contribuciones/Momoelf This is my page: http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usuario_Discusi%C3%B3n:Momoelf#.C2.BFOtra_vez_plagiando.3F All the attacks i have proved it to be false, and the faults of ettiquette i have apologized and recognize i was stupid. THis is my en.wikipedia disccussion: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Momoelf Here it says that i evade my ban. It's true, i evaded it because i wanna collaborate even though those guys dont want me there. This were my contributions during the ban: http://es.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Crisis_econ%C3%B3mica_de_2008-2009&diff=26464986&oldid=26444716 And here you can see, how even i try to use a lot of sources for referering, they delete it, saying without verifying, im copyrighting (the link to the pages are in the edit):http://es.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Citigroup&diff=28292453&oldid=27982835 Plz, help me.--Momoelf (talk) 07:50, 25 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations to you on your (apparently re-?)election to the Board--it's nice to know the community makes good choices in this regard! I look forward to our working together to continue improving this place in the future (or at least I hope I still have contributions to make in that arena). Request[edit]

Dear Kats, how are you? It seems like a mighty long time since the last time that I've requested something from you. I was wondering if you could check out the Copyright Infringement of Photos allegations discussed in Talk:65th Infantry Regiment (United States) in regard to the images in the table of the 65th Infantry Regiment (United States)#Notable Puerto Rican members of the 65th Infantry. I believe that the person making the claim and legal threats is wrong in doing so. I sent a message to Michael Snow, he hasn't responded, therefore I would appreciate it you or anyone who has the proper knowledge would look into the matter. I am not too knowledgeable in these matters. Thank you. Tony the Marine (talk) 20:20, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OTRS help requested[edit]

Hello Kat, I know that you are very busy with all of the responsibilities that you have in Wikipedia, but I really need your help.

The following image File:Joe Sanchez.jpg has been placed for deletion. However, permission from the copyright holder was forwarded to OTRS on 11/8/ 09 and again on 11/12/09. Here is what was sent:

bluewall@mpinet.net. "I, Joe Sanchez_____, as the copyright holder of the image attached/in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Joe_Sanchez.jpg, agree to release in under the terms of GFDL. I understand that this allows anyone to use the image for any purpose, including commercial use, as long as the constraints in the license, like attribution, are respected."

I would appreciate if you would look into the progress of the process of this permit or at least have the deletion of the image delayed until OTRS does what it does, because it would be a pity to have the image deleted. Thank you Kat. Tony the Marine (talk) 20:27, 12 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Question for Mindspillage[edit]

I recently made my first edit addition in Wikepedia to the Skepticism pg. It was deleted for not being neutral. It is my understanting that all world views have weakness. Often in Wikepedia some world views have a small criicisim or opposing world views posted. For example the Creation Science view has opposing view and criticism posted. I am not sure I am posting this correctly for Mindspillage comment. I hope you can guide and correct me. I will post my edit for your review below. Logictj (talk) 01:33, 19 January 2010 (UTC)--Logictj (talk) 01:33, 19 January 2010 (UTC) Skepticism Criticism: Most philosophies have weaknesses and can be criticized and this is a general principle of progression in philosophy [1]. The philosophy of skepticism asserts that no truth is knowable [2] or only probable [3]. It has similarities to empiricism. Some say the scientific method also asserts probable findings, because the number of cases tested is always limited and they constitute perceptual observations [4]. The basic premise “no truth is knowable” refutes itself; as how can this truth be known? [5]. Skepticism also goes against common sense idea that we can know something and the belief that some truths are necessary to carry out ordinary life [6]. Kreeft noted that we do err and we are fallible. Error does not prove skepticism; it refutes it, because we recognize error against a standard of truth [7]. If we deny reason, we must use our reason to do so. Some reason insists on doubt, but our nature insists on assuming innate principles.[8] Logictj 01:34, January 19, 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have moved the above to this spot after it had been misplaced at the top of this page. I have also placed some advice on the user's talk page, including to not edit war and not to use multiple IPs. They need to log in. -- Brangifer (talk) 03:46, 16 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fancy closing an RfC?[edit]

Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Bureaucrat Unchecking has now been open for 32 days; with only four comments in the past 10 days. RFCBot ran off with the RfC tag two days ago; it's easily time for it to be closed. Due to the nature of the issue, no administrator is truly "uninvolved", but one who is especially well-respected by the community, such as yourself; are the closest thing we've got. Fancy making a close? For reference, I'm contacting former arbitrators who hold admin tools but no other bits. Cheers, Happymelon 19:05, 11 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Help Requested[edit]

Tony the Marine recommended that I speak with you about my issue. I have been dealing with some administrators who, in my opinion, are not acting in a neutral manner.

I use Wikipedia manly for research on history. I noticed over time, some articles I had read previously now have had the date style changed from BC/AD to BCE/CE. I admit initially I changed them back not knowing the rules, and sometimes I handled my reaction poorly in the discussion pages. However, after reading the rules located at WP:ERA, I was actually justified in my edits. It clearly states that date styles should NOT be changed "unless there is substantial reason for the change, and consensus for the change with other editors." In the edits I reverted, no substantial reason was given, nor was a consensus achieved. Now, I am receiving quite hostile messages, and threats of being blocked, from some administrators who, through their edits and writings, it appears have a bias on the subject.

I would appreciate any help you can provide, as it seems some administrators are applying a double standard when the rules at [WP:ERA]] are very clear. Thank you for your help! (Jgw71 (talk) 16:18, 13 April 2010 (UTC))[reply]

Copyrights protection[edit]

Hi, Mindspillage! Could you please have a look at this Village pump section? The plagiarism by Mr. Cvikl has been reported by all major Slovenian media. Something should be done to protect the copyrights of the Wikipedia contributors, I just don't know how to go about it. Any advice? Thanks for your help! --Eleassar my talk 14:55, 18 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations[edit]

Was that a legal threat?! Well done! You can no longer say "IANAL", anyway. Very best wishes, --RobertGtalk 20:46, 15 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, congrats from me too! Has it been that long already ... wow. Hope you get a law named after you soon! :) Antandrus (talk) 20:56, 15 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks very much, both of you! (Man, I need to actually log in more often.) Robert, I think I am obligated to say IANAL until I pass the bar exam, at least! Using a CC image that has an OTRS tag[edit]

Hello, Kat. You're listed as an OTRS person.

I want to add *File:BRUCE -Coaching 2009.jpg to Bruce's Familypedia page. May I just rely on the "This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 License." or does the OTRS tag restrict it?

A reply on http://familypedia.wikia.com/wiki/User_talk:Robin_Patterson would be most welcome. Robin Patterson (talk) 10:40, 20 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

MfD nomination of Wikipedia:Follow all rules[edit]

Wikipedia:Follow all rules, a page you substantially contributed to, has been nominated for deletion. Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:Follow all rules and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Wikipedia:Follow all rules during the discussion but should not remove the miscellany for deletion template from the top of the page; such a removal will not end the deletion discussion. Thank you. Rodhullandemu 02:40, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, the blow to my ego to be repeatedly called not funny! I am glad to see it stay, though I suppose I'm not too deeply attached... Kat Walsh (spill your mind?) 23:17, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have nominated Doctor Fun, an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Doctor Fun. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.

Please contact me if you're unsure why you received this message. Robofish (talk) 01:21, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I created a page at Wikipedia:GLAM/SI as a good central place for discussion of ideas of what we can offer to the Smithsonian at the Meetup meeting. You are pretty active in this sort of stuff in the DC area, so I thought you would be interested. Sadads (talk) 14:16, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
