Article Feedback deployment

Hey MRSC; I'm dropping you this note because you've used the article feedback tool in the last month or so. On Thursday and Friday the tool will be down for a major deployment; it should be up by Saturday, failing anything going wrong, and by Monday if something does :). Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 22:23, 13 March 2013 (UTC)

Category:People from Kew, London

FYI: I have opposed your proposed speedy renaming of Category:People from Kew, London.

I suggest that to avoid discussing things twice, there should be one CFD discussion which offers an alternative of either:

or

It doesn't make sense to have the two categories out-of-synch, so we should synchronise them one way or the other ... and by nominating them together we'll get a consistent result.

I'm happy to make the CFD nomination offering the two alternatives. Is that OK with you? --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 02:12, 14 March 2013 (UTC)

Sure. As the article is named Kew it doesn't seem as contentious to me. MRSC (talk) 06:29, 14 March 2013 (UTC)

See Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2013 March 14#Kew. I hope that I have set out your position fairly, and will now add a copy of the speedy nom. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 15:58, 14 March 2013 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:Seeda logo.png)

Thanks for uploading File:Seeda logo.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:36, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

Rail

Hi MRSC. I am intending on a more descriptive, less misleading classification for Britain's railways. Please give your thoughts as to how we can improve the current classification at the railways template where you have been a contributor. Adam37 (talk) 15:16, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

Request to take part in a survey

Hi there. I would very much appreciate it if you could spend ~2 minutes and take a short survey - a project trying to understand why the most active Wikipedia contributors (such as yourself) may reduce their activity, or retire. I sent you an email with details, if you did not get it please send me a wikiemail, so that I can send you an email with the survey questions. I would very much appreciate your cooperation, as you are among the most active Wikipedia editors who show a pattern of reduced activity, and thus your response would be extremely valuable. Thanks! --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 11:34, 25 July 2013 (UTC)

Hello, MRSC. Please check your email; you've got mail!
It may take a few minutes from the time the email is sent for it to show up in your inbox. You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{You've got mail}} or {{ygm}} template.

Historic Counties

Hi MRSC, I'm new to wiki so correct me if I'm wrong. The London government Act 1963 made no move to redefine the historic counties surrounding and constituting what is now Greater London. I notice you have removed reference in Orpington and perhaps others, to the historic County of Kent. Under the law of the United Kingdom, many places, even those which identify most with Urban London such Tottenham and Ealing remain in the HISTORIC county of Middlesex, although the administrative and ceremonial County of Greater London is now what is ultimately their governing body. As of the 1st April 1965, as I see you have mentioned, the ADMINISTRATIVE duties of these counties were altered, but not their geographical or historic roles. I have also noticed that with regards to STAINES, you note it was part of the HISTORIC county of Middlesex prior to this date, however by law this has not changed as of September 2013. I do hope I am not wallowing in my ignorance, please let me know your thoughts on this, as I am not sure your edit(s) were entirely constructive, or entirely correct. Your infobox template

Gina Trapani?

The Wikipedia space patrol has notified me that you made a change in the Gina Trapani article. I'm watching it, though frankly, I don't remember why. And I can't see any change. Would you please let me know what you did, and why, perhaps? Thx. GcT (talk) 06:00, 21 November 2013 (UTC)

You can go into the page history and there is a list of 'diffs' (differences) marked 'prev'. Here is the one for my edit on 13:45, 6 November 2013‎ which added the template {{TWiT podcasts}} to the bottom of the article. MRSC (talk) 06:37, 21 November 2013 (UTC)

The intended merger of certain parishes into their main settlement

Dear MRSC, I am not proposing not listening, far from it, as you can see I have all along sought to implement the consensus. You raise an interesting issue. However I do think that for the least populated parishes with one clear main settlement, it is right not to write about this minority separately from their main village. That is my interpretation of all of the the guidance put together at WP:UKVILLAGES and at WP:MERGE. - Adam37 Talk 14:07, 21 November 2013 (UTC)

Established practice and consensus is to keep them separate. We have soruces about local government (parish councils, meetings) and statistical information (from the ONS) that relates specifically to the parishes. They are incorporated areas for local government. If anything the settlements should be merged into the parish article (if settlement articles alone are ever unviable). Last discussed here. November 2013

Thank you for contributing to Wikipedia. We always appreciate when users upload new images. However, it appears that one or more of the images you have recently uploaded or added to an article, specifically Template:Infobox London Borough, may fail our non-free image policy. Most often, this involves editors uploading or using a copyrighted image of a living person. For other possible reasons, please read up on our Non-free image criteria. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Werieth (talk) 16:38, 26 November 2013 (UTC)

@Werieth: I don't understand why you are removing that image. It is the coat of arms of London Borough of Barking and Dagenham and has the correct rationale on the image page. MRSC (talk) 16:42, 26 November 2013 (UTC)
I removed the file from the template, not the article, if the file is justified it can be used via passing it though a template parameter (Just like most infoboxes) Because that template can be used on multiple articles where justification doesnt exist, the image cannot be in the template. Werieth (talk) 17:47, 26 November 2013 (UTC)
I understand what you are saying. Perhaps, in future, you should consider explaining your actions more fully in the first place rather than posting warnings and acronyms. If experienced editors do not understand your actions, newbies have no chance. MRSC (talk) 18:17, 26 November 2013 (UTC)

Categorization

Some advice on categorization: Articles should be categorized by the defining characteristics of the topic of the article. For example the most definining characteristics of Torbay_Council are that it's a council and it's in Torbay; hence, the article should be in Category:Torbay. It should not be in categories for things that are not defining characteristics - anything that isn't mentioned in the article (e.g. education) can't be appropriate for categorization of that article. In other words, categorization should not be used as a way to create lists regardless of the content of the articles being categorized. DexDor (talk) 06:02, 11 December 2013 (UTC)

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Coventry City Council may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "[]"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.
