(Just practising my headings... interesting that with no heading, the text was sitting ABOVE your contents box, but now I've put a heading it, it drops below...ooh and I see it now features in the table of contents. Aha...). Thanks for the extra advice, I'll follow that up. Jumping in on the training in Glasgow would be awesome if do-able. I can probably persuade work to pay for it as CPD if that helps. Thanks so much for the inspiration. I already have two Qs!
- I've suggested on the talk page for my organisation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Scottishathletics) that it could do with updating and provided a couple of links to sources; if nobody follows it up and updates it, is there any other way of bringing it to editors' attention? It's *super* out of date.
- Any suggestions where I could keep my eye out for any introductory sessions IRL? I have so much to learn and it'd be great to start with a real person :)

The Editathon I have worked with one of the Glasgow Fairs between 2003 and 2010 and have lots of useful and relevant pictures, but I am finding the effort of validating photography on the Wikimedia project rather tiresome. Thank you for contributing to the grant request for training Wikipedia admins to be more aware of sexism! This grant has been approved in pilot form, and the Ada Initiative is running an Ally Skills Workshop at Wikimania 2015. This workshop will focus on teaching specific skills and techniques directly relevant to Wikipedia admins and editors, and in particular will teach people about the psychology of trolls. The workshop will be on Thursday July 16 from 2pm to 5pm in Don Diego 3.
If you are attending Wikimania, you are invited to apply to the Ally Skills Workshop! Space is limited and we may not be able to accept all applications, so apply now. More information, including a link to the application form, is here:

The Combat
Does "Wikimedian-in-Residence at Museums Galleries Scotland" include the Scottish National Gallery? If so, do you think you could see if they have any better quality images of The Combat: Woman Pleading for the Vanquished they could be persuaded to release? The painting in question has been marinating in Edinburgh's pollution for two centuries and it shows; the varnish is so dark, our article needs to have an engraving alongside it to serve as a "this is what you're seeing" guide. Hopefully, they might have an older photo floating around somewhere where the colours are actually visible. (If not, it's not a disaster; the current compromise seems to work.) – iridescent 09:42, 7 August 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks—absolutely no rush, as the current compromise works adequately and this is not exactly a high-traffic article. (Although astonishingly, aside from the two Scottish Parliament articles which are something of a special case, assuming this passes FAC it will be the first FA on an Edinburgh topic.) It may well not have been photographed at a better quality—it's such a huge size, it won't fit into the flatbeds they usually use to photograph their paintings. – iridescent 16:20, 7 August 2015 (UTC)

- (Butting in, but seeing as I've already been namedropped) My main thought in suggesting you was a comment John made about only having "a few grainy black-and-white images" for what was once an important landmark—I strongly suspect that there will be some better-quality paintings and photographs mouldering in the vaults of either the Royal Museum (presumably their archives have now been amalgamated with the NMoS), the Riverside, or a Leith History Museum (I assume there is one). In particular, coaxing Edinburgh Museums and Galleries to release a decent-quality upload of this lithograph. ‑ iridescent 09:33, 25 August 2015 (UTC)

There are lovely folks at the Riverside who are keen on Wiki but we're in the process of working through issues surrounding image release so would be unlikely to be able to contribute images at this stage. A few tips
Hi Lirazelf. It's great to see all the progress you have been making in attracting new editors to Wikipedia. Your recent editathon at the Glasgow School of Art seems to have been pretty successful. As you have no doubt noticed, I have looked through some of the biographies created and would like to make some suggestions for the future. I noticed some of the articles had been tagged for plagiarism. This could have been avoided if the information from the school archives had been paraphrased or combined with information from other sources. In each biography, it would also have helped to state the main claim to notability in the lead, together with dates of birth and death (as is common practice in biographies). In adding categories, don't forget to include dates of birth and death as well as main occupation(s) and other areas of interest. If this cannot be achieved in the first draft on the main space, then it may be useful for new users to leave their articles in a sandbox until they have reached a minimum level of acceptability. I know how discouraging it can be for newbies to see their first article is subject to deletion as soon as it has been created. This said, I found most of the new articles were interesting to read and worthwhile including in Wikipedia. I hope most of those who participated will be encouraged to continue editing Wikipedia. The date categories is a great shout, thanks. I find that if new users don't get an article published in the time they don't go back - there's something about the sense of satisfaction (and support from the editathon environment) they get from publishing the article that seems to bring them back... - I agree that publication in the main space is an attraction but then as trainer you should make sure articles don't run the risk of deletion. In future, maybe you would like to encourage biographies of women as they have been largely neglected on Wikipedia. See for example Women in Red.
