Nash the Slash

Hi, I was amused by your post at Talk:Nash the Slash. I've been a big fan of his since the start of his career in the mid 1970s, and I can tell you he is a really nice guy. His costume is just campy humour. His music is quite lovely (it's mostly instrumental), and he has recorded music to accompany viewing of paintings (available on DVD, and he also does live shows in art galleries). You can see concert clips, etc. on YouTube. Sorry if this sounds like an advertisement, but your post seemed to be asking if he is as scary as his picture, so this is my reply. --A Knight Who Says Ni (talk) 13:50, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

Yusuf photo

Hi Leah - don't know anything about that photo - it's the first time I recall seeing it. It's a nice one - hope it's ok to keep. Wish we could get another one from the Cat days - the infobox pic is a great photo artistically, but you can't really see what he looked like. We used to have one that I loved - in jeans, by a window or some such - but it was taken down a long time ago, not sure why. I am really not up on the whole image rights area - I leave that to others and concentrate on the words and layout. There are lots of folks around herre who know a lot about it, so I'm just as happy to let them figure it out. Tvoz/talk 19:02, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Yes, there's a lot to learn at Wikimedia, and the biggest offense of course is copyright violation. I've been fortunate to meet an Admin. there who has been teaching me a little at a time (all I can handle, lol). The first thing I noticed was that nearly all the other language Wikipedia sites use the photos that I've uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons. That's a very good indication of how tight the market is with finding "free" good Cat Stevens or Yusuf photos. My fear, looking at the "new" Yusuf photo I placed... doesn't it look to you like someone scanned that photo from a magazine or an album? I know many other language Wikipedia sites aren't as rigorous about such issues as copyright. I fear I'll have to remove it. Perhaps you know someone who also was an earlier editor or who speaks one of those languages? I just normally email every single person whose photos I upload, for permission, and give them credit on the page, (about 400 photos now, with 35 or so being uploaded with the help of others as you can see). Brian Ritchie

Did you find that photo of Brian Ritchie on Flickr and upload it here? It's a good picture of him, inasfar as it shows exactly what he looks like onstage. Yes, that was me:) Glad you like it. A couple of months ago, I just went nuts over so many articles that either had crappy photos, or none at all. Oteil Burbridge

Thanks for your continued work on Oteil Burbridge. The infobox image is particularly nice. In my opinion though the "refimprove" template is not needed, because the article has 6 footnotes and 14 references. I'm guessing that you added it because it would be better if some of the references were changed to inline footnotes, but the article has a lot of good refs, inline or not. Thanks, I've removed the template. It could just be me, but lately I've noticed a proliferation of "refimprove" templates. Personally I think they should only be used in cases where articles have no reference, or hardly any. In fact, if it was up to me, they'd only be used on articles whose content was also somewhat questionable. Because I feel that way, I'm hesitant to mention this, but have you seen Template:No footnotes? You might like it. As it says on the template page, it's intended to be placed at the beginning of the References section of an article. I'd still vote for leaving it off the Oteil Burbridge article, but I'd feel remiss if I didn't mention it. As for working together on projects, that could be fun, but lately I've been editing less than formerly, due to my other commitments. Because of that I've been doing more "drive by editing" than before.  ;-) — Mudwater (Talk) 02:39, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

pix and rescue

As I've said, I'm really not the one to talk to about how to navigate image policies here - I have limited grasp, and I have decided to stay away from it as I have lots of other stuff taking my time. All I can suggest is you read WP:RAT, and look at other successful image pages and see what their free-use justifications are, but you're best off finding some helpful soul who actually understands this stuff to walk you through it. Try asking at Village Pump or maybe on one of the Wiki Project pages. I know my limitations, and this is one of them - sorry. In general the photo policies here, I think, are overly stringent and their view of fair use incredibly narrow - but this is not my battle, honestly - I have others to fight.

As for the text of the Davies page in general, it looks basically ok to me - the article is not in danger of deletion, therefore not in need of "rescue". But it is in need of a copyedit - I'll try to look at that when I have a chance. Scrapomatic is not much more than a stub and could use expansion, but is also not in danger of deletion as far as I can see. I did remove some of the excess wikilinking there. It's not clear to me that Olsen is notable beyond Scrapomatic, so I wouldn't set up a separate page now for him, unless you have more independent information on him. Sometimes a redirect is sufficient. I added a disambiguation note on the other Paul Olsen, directing people to Scrapomatic.

If you want to get people to help expand those articles, your best bet are the relevant music Wiki projects - there is a list of them here - pick the appropriate ones and put notes on their talk pages asking for help to expand the articles. They also often have places where you can list articles in need of major or minor improvement - see WP:RSM for example. Tvoz/talk 04:58, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

Can you help with something or refer me to someone?

Hey! The article here for Derek Trucks, and the one for his band, The Derek Trucks Band need separation. At first everything was on his page, but as his band gained a following, the band information was given it's own page far too early. Now the band page needs to be ah, surgically separated from the first article. None of the band members except Derek Trucks have pages of their own. I took comfort that the lead singer, Mike Mattison was already part of an established duo called Scrapomatic with someone named Paul Olson, only to discover that the editor wikified Olsen's name, but confused him with someone named Paul E. Olsen. So, now I'm faced with three articles which need assistance of varying kinds.

Specifically, can you help with this?:

I have no photo of the drummer of the Derek Trucks band, however, the photo of the band was extra large- and I wonder if it is possible to crop from this photo from the largest size of the photo here in commons, the part of the left-hand side where the drummer, Yonrico Scott is located-- can that part be cropped so that a big enough and clear enough part of the pic would be suitable for an infobox or an example like the other bandmates' photos in the page? http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b4/Derek_Trucks_Band_with_Susan_Tedeschi.xas.jpg

I use Irfanview. Try it. It is amazingly easy.
  • http://www.irfanview.com - Download the latest version and the latest plugin package. Both install almost instantly. Download the image. Double-click the image file. It will open inside Irfanview. Drag a rectangle around part of the image to select what you want. Click "crop selection" from the edit menu. Then click "save" from the file menu. You are done! Try it and see what I mean. You can ask for more help from me if needed.
It is easy to fix naming problems for wikilinks and articles. Changing the name, moving the page, adding/removing redirect code, creating disambiguation pages, etc., etc.. It is easy, but you have to be willing to play around with it. Or just ask for help at an admin noticeboard.
It looks like the Paul Olson link is not currently connected to the Paul E. Olsen link. A redlink just means the page does not yet exist. You can remove the redlink by removing the brackets around it. Or you can start a page by clicking the redlink and adding some text. --Timeshifter (talk) 07:43, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. It was attached to the wrong Paul Olson. Paul E. Olson isn't a musician. Someone made a page assuming the brackets around the name were correct, and they are not. Paul Olsen the musician has no page yet, and thus needs some kind of disambiguation. The article is about a duo, Mike Mattison, of The Derek Trucks Band, and Paul Olsen, who I never heard of before, both musicians who don't have individual pages yet. --leahtwosaints (talk) 16:21, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

Actually - I found it myself. It's cute, but I don't see any indication that it was done by him, so I don't see how it could be used in the Cat Stevens bio or even the song article - it seems to be just an individual's application of a song. Point made. I just thought, if there was a Suess "Lorax" TV show, and he'd done it around the time of '70-71, it would've been a project that Cat would have liked around the "Harold and Maude" period, you know? His love of kids; the wealth of material. So maybe if he had done a little kids' special then maybe you would've read about it, maybe on that Majicat.com website or something. Just wanted to include all his stuff. I'm still trying to figure out how he and Elton John came to collaborate on that song, "Honeyman" which definitely is him and John together circa 1971- and a clip of that IS on Majicat. Check this out: [1] THAT is worthy of mention. Wonder if there's mention of it in an Elton bio, or something. Sonner of later if we want an FA article out of that piece, we'll need to cover the discographies, which I'm willing to learn (I can do a half-assed job) and I need to ask a couple of Commons editors about sound bites, but I guess I'd have to shlep over to a library or (used?) book store to find those books about Cat Stevens -esp. the one that won that award! --to really complete the article. If I did get books for the piece (I've been thinking about it), I'd photocopy key pages from the books and mail them to you if you wanted. Certainly. But in every case that I upload and use a photo, I contact the owner to ask that they turn over their copyrights to their photo(s) (many of which are excellent and rare)-- It's my feeling, that since we are placing captions under those photos, that we give attribution there to the photographers if there's room. Besides, it sets up a better relationship in the case that they have other good pics that we need. Wikipedia is making money off their sweat, blood, and kindness. If this leaves them a legacy or draws curious photo fans to check them out, [shrug], I see no problem with it.--leahtwosaints (talk) 13:28, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

Read what it says

Leah, you sometimes panic without carefully reading - relax! Read what the notice above says - the Daydo image - not the article - was tagged because it was orphaned - that is, because the image was not used in any article. An editor removed the image with no explanation from the infobox earlier today - perhaps by mistake, I don't know - and the image page was then automatically tagged and you got an automated "bot" notice. I re-added it to the article, in the text section because I don't think it is appropriate as the infobox image - it is not an image of Davies and if it relevant at all, it is relevant in the section that talks about the album. This re-add should satisfy the "orphan" problem. Whether it will be allowed as fair use in any case, I don't know - as I've told you many times, I stay away from image issues because I find the Wikipedia rules arcane and in many ways a misapplication of "fair use" doctrine. But this is not a fight I am willing to get involved in now. You are the person who uploaded the image, so you are the person who got the notice. It's about the image. As for the Alun Davies article, I don't see anything anywhere that suggests it is being considered for deletion, you are not the only editor on it, and the concept of "orphan" does not apply - that is a term used here, as I said, to mean that an image or file was uploaded but is not being used in Wikipedia articles. If anyone wants to discuss deleting an article, there would be a prominent notice posted on the article itself. Tvoz/talk 18:33, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

I do NOT want to lose that last image; there has to be someone who knows how to fill out non-free images around here-- there's a zillion album covers I've been replacing all over Wikipedia that nobody has touched. Curious. OK, there is an actual reason! Not sure what's on your page now, so, here it is, if you recall me saying someone once tried to overrule me by saying "Count my number of edits"-- it was the same person who leaned on me, hard, about my dislike of using You Tube links as reliable. (I actually went out of my way for a good while to pull them, or find their source, since obviously they can be copyvio, or removed, or whatever.) I was adding the photos to the Tal Wilkenfeld article, and seeking to flesh it out and this other editor, (an Admin. on Commons if I'm not mistaken), said, placing a "Listening" section in articles was sensible when the article was in it's early stages. This, assuming that then, we'd have good candidates for audio clips nearing the GA stage, rather than what I did in Derek Trucks piece, using the "hidden" arrows, saying a source, not You Tube, though, would be good later for audio clips. Read the talk page for Tal Wilkenfeld, I'm pretty sure it's all still there. The thing is, I never really learned from anyone to edit Wikipedia, though I've done so nearly every day for hours since Feb. 2007 under an IP Address, and then in 2007 under my current username. Perhaps three people have really answered questions for me at times, but other than that, I've been flying by the seat of my pants, learning mostly from how other people have edited, and most often, getting bitched out when I do make errors, so I'm more than a little touchy, and for that I apologize.

Why thanks! No, Mark McClelland is all yours, unless you need help with something, and if that's the case, feel free to leave me a message here! I've lately been adding photos (the photo there was the first I've added that I didn't upload since the first few photos when others taught me how to do it). Sometimes, I'll surf in, or like I said, add a photo and/or infobox if needed, and I get sucked into the piece just to copyedit what's there. So it worked well for us both, it seems. And I also have in mind a separate page about the gigs they've played, we can dig out dates/venues from their myspace, and plus there are show posters too! But thats just an idea right now. About Kirsten, that's a pity. Perhaps more will turn up as time goes by.. I almost forgot to mention-- when creating the infobox for McClelland, I was unable to find a clear mention of what instrument he played both on the Snow Patrol and on Mark McClelland without really diving into it. The infoboxes have one spot listing Occupation -which in his case, I'd say, Musician, and Songwriter (or Composer).. then it has a spot for Instruments, and that's where I was stalled, looking. It should be clear both on band pages and the individual's page in the introduction what instrument and role the person plays (or played). Can you look that over? I know zip about Snow Patrol. Never heard of them till I added the infobox! I do hope the photo(s) you plan to use are yours, or you have asked the copyright holder for permission for use here, as infringement is a HUGE no-no. --leahtwosaints (talk) 20:05, 28 May 2009 (UTC)

I know this only because its for everyone to see on their DVD. And about the photos, About the permissions, Their myspace has information on who took the photo, so I was thinking of crediting the photographer, because there's no link or anything where I could find him. Yes, I found at least his knowledge of guitar and bass when I was trying to figure out what role (or instrument) he played in Snow Patrol and the other bands. I just wanted to let you know that if it was confusing to ME what his role was, surely left without any extra clarity, the others who might surf through might not be willing to read far and thus wonder what he did. The infobox is supposed to be something you can glance at with the intro and get the idea of the article- that was just my observation. BY the WAY, if you ever find additional time on your hands, I could sure use some help with the articles for Derek Trucks and The Derek Trucks Band. The original page for Derek Trucks was divided between Derek and his band, but there is still too much info about him on the band page, and vice-versa-- not to mention the fact that there is still a need to create pages for each individual band member in his band! But I really need to finish 'Little Doses' and a tour article I wrote for Snow Patrol, there's too much backlog to start a new project right now, but I'm willing. Perhaps you'd be kind enough to give me suggestions on this. I think the tickets section can be shortened, the article looks bloated. Its basically finished, except for some finishing touches. No sweat. No pressure to do The Derek Trucks Band, or whatever. Sometimes a change of pace is nice, so I was just thinking, in case you get bored one day.. you get the idea! But really, if you aren't moved to do it, don't worry about it. I'll see if I run into any photos on Flickr and elsewhere for photos relating to your articles. However, I will not use MySpace, Digg, Facebook, or any of those other things other than email, and You Tube. Havent forgotten you either

I myself was busy with personal stuff the last 2-3 days. And then a back problem, which kept me bedridden for half of yesterday, still reeling under its effects. Havent done much in the last few days, apart from posting the Doses article, and not a lot else. As for the tour article, its here. Note

Landscape images in musician infoboxes must be set to 250 for width. Non-landscaped images do not have a set width unless the original image is less than 220. Also note, only the first word in a comma delimited list (which all fields must be) needs to be capitalised. Genres, instruments occupations... are not proper nouns and do not need to be cap'd (other than the first one) Also, all labels are piped links in order to shorten up the box length. You work hard on music articles but I see you just keep making these same mistakes over and over and over and other editors have to correct your errors. Thanks. You answered volumes about why some images seem to look smaller than they should. Seems weird to list instruments, and only capitalize some- what if they don't have commas and instead are like a list, with a break in each name of an instrument? That's why I thought, surely it would mean capitalizing. But I don't have any real contact with others outside of what you are looking at here on my talk sheet, and that's a couple years old now, yet I spend easily 5-6 hours a day (at my own pace) making new infoboxes for pages which lack them, and a lot of basic crap that has to be done. Whoops. Forgive me, it's been a harrowing last couple of days. I've been spaced out. I think what Derek Trucks needs is these things: first, the article was about him AND his being one of the two guitarists in The Allman Brothers Band, since like, age 9, but officially since about ten years ago. But he also began a side project at age 14-15, The Derek Trucks Band, which has put out around 7 albums, and married Susan Tedeschi, a helluva blues singer. So here's the thing.. mostly, there are redundancies in the Derek Trucks article, and in his band's article. That needs cleanup, and also, all the band members need pages. I've found photos for all but the drummer and put them on the band page, too. I can get the drummer's picture. So that's where things stand. There's at least a couple of album pages not made yet, need to keep info about individuals separate from the band page, and make sure it isn't too repetitive. WOW. What a mess. If you aren't familiar with Derek's band yet, here's a good You Tube taste- gives you an idea of why Eric Clapton picked him to tour around the world as an equal in his band, with Derek's band opening but Derek remaining afterward in Clapton's band-- and he's still in his twenties!:

Absolutely, him being in multiple bands is creating a lot of confusion for me. I did read both articles, his, and the band's and one thing I now know is that the albums are the same, he doesnt have solo albums. I have both pages on my watchlist, so I'll be on the lookout for vandalism. One problem (as I see it) on both pages is that it gives the feeling it's not neutral, there's too much praise. Look out for it.

So then I'll concentrate on the album articles first. I'll add them to the watch list as well, as I start editing them. I'll do the debut album (of 1997, self titled) first. And btw, don't feel bad in asking me to help, it'll be a welcome change for me as well, after constantly sticking to Snow Patrol articles. About audio clips, I know how to edit them, cut them short (30 sec samples, as wiki requires), if i have the full song, I can do that.

AWESOME! I didn't know you knew how to do clips. Yeah, there are a few that would be great. And actually, before I got on this photo kick, I was editing Cat Stevens for some time, and if any songwriter/performer needs some song clips, he surely does. And this I did as much as I could find, it's not much, but there's no info really. The present article itself could use more refs, on the "other personnel" section. Actually, I did tell you my name, I think you missed it as you were down and out with fever :) (here). Anyway, I'm not on vacation YET. There's two days still. I will be doing cleanup on more Derek albums. I just didn't do anything today cuz I'm feeling lazy. Sorry, but just so you know, I haven't done any significant bit for my projects as well. I will check out the Pink Floyd pages for ideas, but as I told you, I can't seem to find any sort of information on Derek's albums, probably because it's difficult to find news items from 1997-98, as compared to 2008-09, as you can see what I've done to these pages here and here. Okay, I didn't create the album page, but I did give it a facelift and added much of the info it currently has. None of those ideas apply to Derek's pages cuz there's no info at all! If you could, could you please surf around the internet looking for anything to add. Maybe you'd have old magazines which could help, we can cite this information. Just an idea.

I can do the sound clips BEFORE I go. Won't take much time. I don't have the songs you mentioned (apart for "First Cut", but a Rod Stewart version), so if you could email them to me, I'd clip them to 30 sec and send them back, if that's possible. Those song articles seem to have enough information (especially First Cut) to get a GA, so good luck to you and Tvoz. I could teach you how to do that as well, it's too easy.

About returning favors, it'd be awfully nice of you to get permission on some photos I might need for my projects. I don't use flickr, although it seems to be the mecca for wiki photos, so I'll browse around and let you know if there are any I could use. What is copyediting, by the way?
