Thank you for the chocolate chip cookies and for the good advice.

The purpose of my edits was discussed in Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Visual_arts/Archive_16#French_Sculpture_Census and again in a talk today. I will now move on by adding a few links to English Wikipedia artists pages each day for a few days and then I will speed up.

LauredeMargerie (talk) 20:56, 1 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Link format[edit]

Hi Laure, I see you have continued to add general links to the artist pages, but as I wrote on the Visual Arts talk page I think you should link to the artist page directly, otherwise your links may seem superfluous. Here is an example I posted to your first edit: my changes. Hope you can change your links to do it this way! Jane (talk) 12:02, 3 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jane. Very sorry for that: I had not seen your post on the Visual Arts talk page. I am not familiar enough with Wikipedia and I thought I would receive a message if something new was posted on that talk. But I understand I have to go and check it myself regularly (I just checked the box on the Visual Arts talk page "Watch this page", this may help?).

Not a problem to link directly to the artist's page on frenchsculpture.org. I linked to the home page because I have been told several times that it is better to link to home pages of websites because they are less likely to change URLs. But mine will not change URLs for artists pages. Thank you very much for your advice. I will change the existing links later today.

I have a question: why do I need to specify the right blue color (color|#36B) when the other links are in the right blue color without specifying it?

LauredeMargerie (talk) 13:22, 3 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, watchlisting the page will help. I would change your "preferences" (menu at top right of screen) to automatically watchlist all pages you edit. "Watchlist" on the preferences menu, tick "Add pages and files I edit to my watchlist". Apart from anything else, this will enable you to see if anyone is removing your links on articles. This is possible, and you might not be notified directly. In that event, I and I expect Jane and others would argue the case for them, but we need to know it is happening. Most French sculptor biographies will not change very often. You can also get any messages on this page here forwarded by email, which may be good - "Notifications" on the preferences menu, tick "Talk page message"/Email. Re the colour - don't specify it. At the moment there is no Wikipedia article for French Sculpture Census on the English Wikipedia, so it will show red, as it does at Nicolas-Sébastien Adam after Jane's change. If someone writes a short article it will change to blue, and you should not "fiddle" the link to anticipate this. Is there an article on the project on the French WP? If so, I could translate that, or work something else up (some links for media coverage would be helpful here). Johnbod (talk) 13:35, 3 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the Preferences advices, I will certainly do as you say. Regarding color, I will remove the color code. There is no English or French Wiki page about French Sculpture Census/Répertoire de sculpture française. I could create them later this week or next week. Would the red turn to blue automatically? And the External links would still link to the website, not to the Wiki page? LauredeMargerie (talk) 14:09, 3 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes and yes. I had a quick look at google, and some independent press coverage would be useful, as new articles have to establish WP:NOTABILITY. There wasn't much in English, apart from the funding partners, but perhaps there is more in French? If you start an article, let me know, & I can add touches. Johnbod (talk) 14:17, 3 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I have made a press review which might be useful. I will let you know when I start the pages. Thanks again for your support. LauredeMargerie (talk) 14:24, 3 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm after reading this I think it may be useful to create a template -- the same way we did it for the BBC Your Paintings website. That way the urls can be changed in one place (assuming the suffixes per artist never change!!). That template is here: Template:YourPaintings Template:Art UK bio. Let me know if you think this would be easier. I guess we don't need to link to the website, but generally I see that as a common courtesy to the reader. Jane (talk) 16:09, 3 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I am OK with the idea of using a template. I need though to look at a Wiki tutorial to see if this is something I can handle. Sorry, I did not understand what you mean by "I guess we don't need to link to the website, but generally I see that as a common courtesy to the reader": which website? LauredeMargerie (talk) 16:46, 3 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I meant a page about the website - never mind, I will create the template, and we can always adjust it later to include the page if and when it gets created. Jane (talk) 18:46, 3 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much for creating the template. I have been looking at Wiki Help about templates and it seemed a bit too difficult for me. Best. LauredeMargerie (talk) 18:53, 3 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Laure, don't worry - I understand how complicated it can seem. Now that I looked at it I realized I can make it even easier to use in future. If you load all of your "url slugs" into Wikidata, then you only need to add the template and it will link correctly. See my sample edit with the "Your Paintings" template here. In order to do this, you need a Wikidata property and you should add your website to Mix-n-Match. Let me know if you're interested in this. Jane (talk) 19:25, 3 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I would not mind copying and pasting several hundred times a formula copied on the one you inserted in the Nicolas-Sébastien Adam page. But I trust you when you say using a template would be a better way to do it. I talked this morning with Jacques Haba, the Digital Media Manager here at the Nasher Sculpture Center where my office is, about URLs and whether the URLs in my website might change. He said probably not, except for the "en" and "fr" showing the language version of the website (they are sometimes causing trouble with the search). This change, if ever it happens, would be a good reason to use a template. So I am willing to use a template if I am capable of doing what you say: getting a Wikidata property, adding my website to Mix-n-Match and loading the URL slugs. Thank you for your help. LauredeMargerie (talk) 19:45, 3 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The Wikidata property has the extra advantage of being easily accessible for other projects. So e.g. we don't have a "authority control" template for artworks yet. If we make it though, then your property could be a part of it (even if it is not global but mostly US-based French names today, this may expand in future). Anyway, no matter whether the Wikidata property is created or not, this usage will always work - here is another edit: here Jane (talk) 20:18, 3 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wouaw! So you already created the template?! LauredeMargerie (talk) 20:23, 3 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. Just add the last bit of the url (the "url slug") to the template and it will take the page name and add that in. Jane (talk) 22:14, 3 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I just changed all the links that I had created over the last days using your template. It was very easy. Thank you so much. But you are not done with me! Three more questions:

1. I preferred your first phrasing: "Nicolas-Sébastien Adam the Younger in American public collections on the French Sculpture Census website" rather than "Sculptor page for Alexander Archipenko at the French Sculpture Census site" because it gives the viewer immediately some information about the fact that it deals with American public collections and because it puts the emphasis on objects gathered here for the first time rather than on an artist page which has generally no new information. Thanks to the fact it is a template, is it possible to change it?
2. You were kind enough to create the template for me but I feel I should be independent about it and know where it lies if I want to make a change such as the one I just mentioned. Can I have access to it and where?
3. What can we do for the person who will be creating the links on French Wikipedia pages? Could you also create the template for her? It would be: "Nicolas-Sébastien Adam le jeune dans les collections publiques américaines sur le site du Répertoire de sculpture française" and it should point to: http://frenchsculpture.org/fr/artist/adam-le-jeune-nicolas-sebastien-dit. But I can well understand if it is out of your possibilities and I do not want to take advantage of your kindness. Let me know frankly.

Anyway, thank you so much for creating the template. Best, LauredeMargerie (talk) 00:02, 4 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, thanks for doing this Jane, but "Nicolas-Sébastien Adam the Younger in American public collections on the French Sculpture Census website" is better. "Sculptor page for Alexander Archipenko ..." is not grammatical. Johnbod (talk) 02:32, 4 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Jane (talk) 07:55, 4 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much, very helpful. LauredeMargerie (talk) 18:22, 4 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

International accounts / Creating French Sculpture Census WP page / Maintenance of templates[edit]

International accounts

Under Preferences/Global account information on my User page, I see that a fr.wikipedia.org account has been created the following day I created my en.wikipedia.org account. When I click on the link, the page says (in French): “User: LauredeMargerie. Wikipedia does not have a user page with this name.” But I also see on my French talk page that a Wikipedian for fr.wikipedia sent me a welcome message. Is this French user page already existing and I need to “activate” it? Do I need to do something?

Creating French Sculpture Census and Répertoire de sculpture Wikipedia pages

For Johnbod: I have put in my en.wikipedia sandbox the text for a page for French Sculpture Census. You offered to review it. How would you like me to send it to you? Where would you like me to send the press review? My text in French is also ready. Would you like me to put it also in the English sandbox?

Maintenance of templates

Am I allowed to maintain my template myself or is this is something reserved for Wikipedia administrators? If I am allowed, how can I have access to it?

LauredeMargerie (talk) 16:22, 7 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I've reviewed the English text, and added some touches, but it needs references. If the press review is in French, could you add it yourself? Also some from FSC website etc. Later it will need some categories. You can edit the template, though they can be quirky. If you want a French user page, just click on the red link and edit. But you can just ignore it if you don't. Johnbod (talk) 16:42, 7 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much for reviewing the text and improving it. I added in the sandbox the press review: this is not to be posted but for you to review and build the WP:NOTABILITY? I also added the French version and its press review for you to have a look at it. LauredeMargerie (talk) 16:55, 7 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I will be done Monday, 14 December, with creating the links for French sculptors on English Wikipedia pages. I would like to start doing the same on French Wikipedia pages. How should I proceed? Do I need to start the whole discussion afresh or can I just translate into French the "adding link per Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Visual_arts/Archive_16#French_Sculpture_Census" and French administrators will turn to the English talk? Also do I need to activate my French WP account? And how can I create the French template?

Second topic: the WP pages for French Sculpture Census and Répertoire de sculpture française. Are they OK or do I need to wait for someone to approve them? Thank you in advance for your help, LauredeMargerie (talk) 17:13, 11 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

No, they need references. Something from the Liberation pice might be useful. Most of those given are not independent, or too short. Johnbod (talk) 04:22, 13 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The Liberation piece is very short, a brief announcement (is there a way I can send it to you?). Not helpful, I suppose. So let's forget about creating a WP page for French Sculpture Census.

And how can I proceed in order to create the links on the French WP? Jane having being kind enough to create the English template for me, I do not know how to do it myself. When I looked in WP for tutorials about creating a template, it seemed difficult. But I would be happy to do it myself. Do you have any advice or recommendation? Thank you very much in advance. LauredeMargerie (talk) 20:05, 14 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

We may be able to get the English article up - I'll try to add the better refs over the next few days. But it will be a bit vulnerable to a deletion request. Then you can try the French. I'm not good at templates in English, still less French, but if you suggest the text to appear I expect Jane or someone who knows these things can do it fairly quickly. Johnbod (talk) 20:17, 14 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Johnbod. Please do as you think best for the WP page.

Regarding the French template, result should read: "Alexandre Archipenko dans les collections publiques américaines sur le site du Répertoire de sculpture française" and it should point to: "http://frenchsculpture.org/fr/artist/archipenko-alexandre". Help with creating French template[edit]

I have tried to create the French version of Jane's template. I posted a message requesting help on a discussion related with creating templates on the French WP but no one answered. My attempt is this: * LauredeMargerie dans les collections publiques américaines sur le site du Répertoire de sculpture française

. I tried using it on a French WP artist page but it did not work.

For Jane, could you please correct my template and make it as neat and clean as yours? This would be a great help! Thank you very much in advance. LauredeMargerie (talk) 19:44, 21 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
