Request Map[edit]

Hi,

I see you've added an SVG image of the Khanda. I was wondering if you're interested in doing the same for a map, based on a non-SVG map?

Thanks and welcome (back?) to Wikipedia! Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 20:06, 16 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'd be willing to give it a shot, but I'm really not a vector graphics artist or GIS person, the Khanda is simple geometrically, so doing a Trace Bitmap worked out pretty well, and I could just tweak some of the corners a bit. I'm not sure the same would be true of a map, but I can give it a try. Which map were you wanting done?
If you could try that'd be excellent!
Basically I require a map like [1] (see "Punjab in 1966:"). This shows the Punjab area of India and Pakistan when it was unified in British India. It then shows the current divisions in the respective countries.
Once this outline is done, I would like to use several derived maps by colouring in particular states and divisions. If you could do this, it would be a huge help! Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 23:33, 16 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not totally clear on the difference between the 1966 and current maps. The divisions of Punjab seem to be identical.
Yes they're identical, but the 1966 map doesn't have lots of city names so should be easier to copy from? If you wish to use city names, then please add Islamabad (Capital), Lahore, Amritsar, Chandigarh and New Delhi (Capital).Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 12:14, 17 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks[edit]

The map looks great! Thanks! Is it possible to make derived maps with certain states coloured in? Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 20:53, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It should be pretty easy, let me know what you want or make a mockup or something :) --Ktims 06:48, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, ace! By the way, I've noticed a slight problem with the Pakistan map. Islamabad is like a union territory so can that be in its own dotted circle like Delhi/Chandigarh?
These are the maps that would be good:
  • Greater Punjab area - Make Pakistan Punjab, HP, Haryana, Indian Punjab and Chandigarh the same colour. Maybe having a similar but lighter colour for Delhi.
  • Indian Punjab area - Same as above, except don't include Pakistani Punjab.
I've also got an idea for a linguistic map, but we can have a look at that later! Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 18:38, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

New Black Tusk Pics[edit]

I like the new Black Tusk pics a lot, and I like the new gallery section. --R

Transparency[edit]

The background was copied from the Commons where it has been very successful. For the cases where it does cause a problem, it is much easier to click on the image to see it on a white background, that in it is to load it up in an image editor to see the transparency, were we not to have it. If you like, take it up on the talk page, but I get the feeling that more people like it than dislike it, and so it should be enabled by default. ed g2stalk 14:04, 10 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Quite, although diagrams in SVG should be suitable filled in - so the background shows us where these files need to be fixed... ed g2stalk 14:37, 10 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for the picture Image:Taylorsine.svg you created. One request. Would you mind making the curves in the picture thicker, so that the picture does not appear so blurry? Same for the axes, and a bit larger fonts won't hurt either. Sorry to bug you, your work is appreciated, but if we can make it look nicer it will be even better. Thanks, you can reply here if you have comments. Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 15:09, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image copyright problem with Image:Brown noise spectrum.png[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Brown noise spectrum.png. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}. If you have not already done so, please also include the source of the image. In many cases this will be the website where you found it.

Please specify the copyright information and source on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me, or ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 06:24, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

wikEd[edit]

The wikEdlogo

Hi, I have seen that you are using the Cacycle editor extension. This program is no longer actively maintained in favor of its much more powerful successor wikEd.

wikEd has all the functionality of the old editor plus:• syntax highlighting • nifty image buttons • morefixing buttons • paste formatted text from Word or web pages• convert the formatted text into wikicode • adjustthe font size • and much, much more.

Switching to wikEd is easy, check the detailed installation description on its project homepage. Usually it is as simple as changing every occurrence of editor.js into wikEd.js on your User:YourUsername/monobook.js page.

Fair use rationale for Image:CTV logo.svg[edit]

Warning sign This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:CTV logo.svg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. When you use a generic fair use tag such as {{fair use}} or {{fair use in|article name}}, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Cavenba 20:22, 23 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Rnzaf roundel.svg[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Rnzaf roundel.svg. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. Thanks for providing the svg's. Any chance you might be able to also whip up examples of the unauthorized pre-1942 specialist insignias? This page has examples with specialty devices, but even plain ones without such devices, just the extra arcs, would be much appreciated. Caerwine Caer’s whines 22:02, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It would be nice to have them, but I don't really want to create generic ones since IMO they wouldn't be usable in the article, and the quality of the specialty images at that source is not good enough to produce a decent looking vectorized version. I'm also not sure about the copyright status since these representations are not created by USGov. Any chance the specialty emblems are available elsewhere with higher quality? Perhaps the emblems are on some other insignia that already have SVGs on wiki somewhere? --Ktims 22:10, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK so a couple of these are pretty obvious. Actually it looks like they're all here already (except cook): Branch_insignia_of_the_United_States_Army. They aren't vectorized but the quality is fairly good so it shouldn't be too bad. I'll give it a go if I remember... --Ktims 22:28, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good, except that judging by the given examples, the specialty devices should probably match the stripes in color as much as possible. Thus the wings should probably be the same color as the stripes. The official World War I Era insignia appear to have used single color devices on insignia, even in the case of signalmen, where a multicolor branch symbol existed. The Cook and Mechanic devices appear to be the same as those used officially during World War I, but they weren't part of any specific branch. The Ordinance and Quartermaster devices would be appropriate substitutes for the Mechanic and Cook devices if you intend to substitute, but the Mechanic and Cook also be nice to have if you ever want to tackle the World War I enlisted insignia, as they were official then. I'm leery of leaving the 6th Class as the only plain one as you suggest. It would leave the false impression to someone who only scanned the pictures that it was "supposed" to be plain while the others had the device. That appears to be not the case. Since they were unofficial, they likely had a number of variations range from plain ones with no device, with a monocolor device, all the way up to a full color embroidered version of the device for soldiers willing to pay for them. Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Blackcomblogo.png[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Blackcomblogo.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 06:30, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Vancouver Wikipedia 10th Anniversary Meetup[edit]

A tag has been placed on File:United States AR seal.png requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
