Cornish Rugby

Hi, I'm Jgjsmith006. I noticed that you have done a lot of work on Cornish rugby. I have created a couple of pages on Cornwall Super Cup and Cornwall Cup but there are quite a lot of gaps in the articles particularly concerning winners pre-2000. Would appreciate it if you have any information you could share that would improve these articles. Thanks. (talk) 12:30, 22 March 2015 (UTC)

Glad to see there is now an article for the cup. Still remember the Pirates beating Redruth to win the cup for the first time. It felt like half of Penzance was there. Will see what I can do with the missing scores. As per convention would it be possible to use – rather than - when you do seasons and scores. 2014–15 and 18–6 rather than 2014-15 and 18-6. Cheers. Jowaninpensans (talk) 12:42, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
Shouldn't be a problem to change. Will be looking to do Cornwall Clubs Cup next - lots of missing information pre 2000 though. Cheers. (talk) 14:52, 23 March 2015 (UTC)
I have some old CRFU handbooks so will have some of the results Jowaninpensans (talk) 15:01, 23 March 2015 (UTC)
Absolute legend getting all those finals. Have just finished CRFU Cornwall Clubs Cup. Missing a lot of information and I might have confused the Junior KO Cup with Junior KO Plate but hopefully you can fill the blanks when able. Cheers. (talk) 20:32, 23 March 2015 (UTC)

French frigate Médée (1741)

Can you please update the French frigate Médée (1741) article from R&B Larn's book on Cornish shipwrecks? Entry will be under the name Boscawen - ran aground at St Ives on 24 November 1745 and was wrecked. Mjroots (talk) 18:29, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

Will see if the book is available from the library tomorrow. Jowaninpensans (talk) 18:52, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
Done Jowaninpensans (talk) 15:47, 24 March 2015 (UTC)

Hi - have just created a page for the county championship for this season (I will do the same for County Shield and Plate). Wondering if you know how bonus points work for the championships - according to The Rugby Paper teams get a bonus for 5 tries or more but 4 tries is the regular bonus and they do not seem to do losing bonuses. Would be great if you can embellish on this (or anything thing else related to county rugby). Cheers. (Jgjsmith006) 12:27, 14 May 2015 (UTC)

Looks like you have found the tables on the England RFU site. There is a mistake on that site with Kent's losing bonus points. Jowaninpensans (talk) 07:58, 17 May 2015 (UTC)

Have been checking the RFU website and it seems they have the plate competition open for second tier teams and the shield for third tier teams. Surrey won the shield three years in a row but are now in the second division while Kent beat Durham in the plate. This all hinges on whether the RFU have got themselves confused. I am going to create a third tier page anyway but would be good if we could get this cleared up as I'm not too sure myself. (Jgjsmith006) 21:17, 18 May 2015 (UTC)

Just checked rugby paper and it seems that shield is division 3 - although confusingly the plate was named the shield up until 2010 and vice versa. Have done changes. (Jgjsmith006) 10:25, 19 May 2015 (UTC)
Good to see these articles are being done. Sorry I haven't been of help but have been working long shifts recently so don't get to do much else. Jowaninpensans (talk) 10:28, 20 May 2015 (UTC)

Werdna Yrneh Yarg (talk) 17:38, 7 August 2015 (UTC)AndrewWerdna Yrneh Yarg (talk) 17:38, 7 August 2015 (UTC) Thank you for removing the myth about the sea encroaching in 1099 - it would hardly have been from a Saxon chronicle then anyway. This eliminates the confusion in readers' minds as it is also in the Folklore section. In fairly recent times it has been suggested that this period related to Mont St. Michel, where the beach is considerably more level. I believe O.J. Padel, who cites St. Michael beside the sea in the mid 11th century. Sorry about the reply I felt that I needed to give to your article on Helstonia by P. Carroll, but we in Helston have the evidences that Helston port was not a myth in any sense of the word. That article would have been far more serious in the Wikipedia than where you placed it! Regarding the formation of the Bay; although records from various sources state the date of its inundation - the only date that convinces me - it does not mean, as you rightly stated, that the Bay, before the 1755 tsunami, was formed then: it may well have been formed immediately after the Ice Age. I also have to correct what I put as to the west end of the Bay being pretty much as it is now, because the land in the map around the Gear rock was then land. 'Gear', as you already know, is likely to mean, 'fort'<Cornish KER, (long e). I shall not place any more messages on your Talk page, but mine is so long, that it is now difficult to see them. My due apologies! Werdna Yrneh Yarg (talk) 17:38, 7 August 2015 (UTC)Andrew

Tribute Somerset 3 South

Hi Jowaninpensans. A series of rugby union articles have been nominated for deletion Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Tribute Somerset 3 South. I'm a Cornish rugby fan like yourself but I am a bit concerned that if lower division rugby union articles (even ones in Somerset) get panned then others will follow as the notability rules seem to suggest everything outside of the Premiership is not notable (seems very thin to me). Wondering how you feel about it and if you would like to comment. Thanks. Jgjsmith006 (talk) 21:47, 20 October 2015 (UTC)

I was reading it with alarm as well. Away at the moment and back on Thursday when I will copy the articles to a word file for future use. Jowaninpensans (talk) 21:13, 20 October 2015 (UTC)

Rugby Maps

Hi Jowaninpensans - hope all is well (apart from teams all losing this weekend). Do you know what has happened to the maps used on the rugby division pages as it seems that the longitude/latitude isn't working properly e.g. Plymouth Albion / Pirates have fallen into the sea. Do you know if there is an alternative way to correct this? Cheers. Jgjsmith006 (talk) 19:14, 25 October 2015 (UTC)

Judging by the league tables both our teams are all at sea.Jowaninpensans (talk) 20:53, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
True - although All Blacks are improving a little bit game by game (it was looking like every loss would be 40+ points at one time). If they can pick up their first win against fellow strugglers Redingsensians then you never know but it is a tough order. As for Pirates they could have a tough time as Ealing are looking good despite being bottom and Moseley can beat the teams around them when they have to but hopefully they can just keep their heads up and still be in the Championship when the new stadium arrives.Jgjsmith006 (talk) 22:02, 2 November 2015 (UTC)

SS Northern Lights

I've had to unlink SS Northern Lights from the Cornwall and 1949 lists as there is another vessel of that name which has a redirect. If you can find a launch year for the 1949 stranding then the redirect can be turned into a shipindex page and correct links reinstated. Mjroots (talk) 17:22, 5 October 2015 (UTC)

Don't know. Read it shortly after it was done and decided to see if the author would do any more edits. Seems to know about the wreck but hasn't added a reference. Might be best to asked editor what the reference is before an undo! Jowaninpensans (talk) 20:45, 9 December 2015 (UTC)

Records for Divisions

Hi Jowaninpensans - well done on result against Bedford (Launceston lost yet again but expected). I noticed you have added league records to your National League 1 pages which I have replicated for National League 2 North seasons. I have also added an overall one for the National League 2 North main page and will duplicate it for National 2 South next. Any thoughts on content, layout etc. Appreciate your input. Thanks. Jgjsmith006 (talk) 12:41, 1 December 2015 (UTC)

Looking good to me. Was planning to do same with this seasons National League 1 but seem to be working a lot of weekends and never got around to it. Jowaninpensans (talk) 20:31, 4 December 2015 (UTC)
I'll compile the National 1 league records season by season - I'll probably wait till the end of this season to do 2015-16 (unless you've done it first of course). Cheers. Jgjsmith006 (talk) 23:11, 4 December 2015 (UTC)
Happy New Year Jowaninpensans (I see Pirates have turned things around). Have added season records to National League 1 page. You may want to add some extra detail to this section such as fastest try, youngest player etc. Cheers. Jgjsmith006 (talk) 20:06, 9 January 2016 (UTC)
Good to see you have done the records, but I don't have access to what you suggest. Looks like the Pirates will stay in the championship this season but can't help feeling that the momentum of a few years ago has been lost. If our Cornwall councillors were less parochial and that stadium was in place a few years ago, the Pirates would be playing in Europe next week and not in the B/I Cup. There is an idiot of an ex-councillor still writing to local papers with his anti-pirates agenda. Still hoping Lancen start winning, even if it helps for next season in a lower league; might have Camborne joining them. Jowaninpensans (talk) 12:00, 10 January 2016 (UTC)
Blacks are now doomed I'm afraid. Saw the Worthing game and we were completely outclassed by a side in 11th (who should probably be higher on past league performances). We have no flair players or even anyone who can kick for position let alone penalties. If we'd had a kicker we would have won a couple of the close games but would still be bottom. Jgjsmith006 (talk) 13:21, 17 January 2016 (UTC)

Pirates v Albion Dec 2004

Hi Jowaninpensans - was wondering if you had information on the derby between Pirates and Plymouth Albion on 27 December 2004 in National Division One. I am missing the attendance which must be fairly high but amazingly no record anywhere for what was a big south-west derby game back in the day. Cheers.Jgjsmith006 (talk) 13:17, 17 January 2016 (UTC)

The Pirates book doesn't give an attendance, even though it does for other home matches. Found online a WMN report which gives a near 5000 crowd. Western Morning News: Shelbourne leaves it late. Western Morning News (Plymouth, England) - 28 December 2004. Jowaninpensans (talk) 19:41, 19 January 2016 (UTC)
Have you got a link for this report? I tried Google search with all key words and couldn't find it (internet is really slow at the moment which doesn't help). I am also missing attendance for Pirate's game at home to Otley on 26 February 2005 if you have it? Thanks. Jgjsmith006 (talk) 21:12, 19 January 2016 (UTC)
Found through Cornwall Council libraries → [1]. Unfortunatley it is not a reproduction of the actual paper but individual articles similar to what you get online in the WMN today. The Otley attendance is missing from the Pirate's book as well. According to the book the date is 27 February. Jowaninpensans (talk) 21:30, 19 January 2016 (UTC)
Thanks - I have found and added reference - amazing that one of what I suspect is Pirates largest ever attendances at the Mennaye was never record but then that's rugby for you! Should be a good resource to use for some of the missing south-west games possibly. If you have any missing Pirates information such as attendances & match reports prior to 2005 then it would be very much appreciated. Could also do with Redruth, Launceston and Mount's Bay and maybe even Camborne. Cheers.Jgjsmith006 (talk) 09:10, 20 January 2016 (UTC)

Cornish Pirates / Cornish Flag

Hi - well done Pirates on B&I Cup qualification for the quarter finals (don't mention my team who got thumped again). On a similar note, I have noticed that someone (not a wiki member) keeps changing the Pirates flag to Cornwall which as much as I love the county is still considered English nationally. Is there any way to protect the page from being edited in this way as I've already changed this back twice now? Cheers. Jgjsmith006 (talk) 19:20, 23 January 2016 (UTC)

If you add Cornish flags or remove ″England″ too often, you get banned from wikipedia. I am happy for people to change the flag – it reminds the English that the Cornish exist and won't go away. I have never considered myself English, and never will, no matter how many times you or any one else tells me I am English. People living in Cornwall have told me how they hate the Cornish, but I deal with it. And they no doubt they deal with being called an english t*** – a common expression. Don't get upset, leave the flag and let someone else change it! Jowaninpensans (talk) 23:53, 23 January 2016 (UTC)
Fair enough - I'm English/Irish/American but live in Cornwall (maybe I now have a fourth nationality based on rugby union rules). I'll leave it to the wiki powers that be. Jgjsmith006 (talk) 10:06, 24 January 2016 (UTC)

Location Maps

Hi Jowaninpensans - hope all is well. I have placed location maps in most rugby union divisions now but feel that they can look quite messy particularly when you have more than one map (representing different counties). Is there any way of getting maps to go side by side as opposed to one under the other. Cheers. Jgjsmith006 (talk) 08:50, 22 April 2016 (UTC)

2016 County Championship Shield

Hi - Jowaninpensans. Have created all the county championship pages for this season (good result for Cornwall earlier) and have a query which is a big of a long shot but you may be able to answer. Middlesex were in last year's Shield competition but seem to have pulled out of this year's competition. Was wondering if you had any idea why as I can not find anything on the Middlesex website or online? Cheers.Jgjsmith006 (talk) 15:33, 8 May 2016 (UTC)

Haven't heard of anything but yet to read RugbyPaper or Independent (local). Cornwall were lucky and the best team lost. If only all those Plymouth Albion players were still at Lancen. Jowaninpensans (talk) 14:41, 8 May 2016 (UTC)
My neighbour went and said it was back and forth. With regards to the Blacks, if we had those players then we certainly wouldn't have got relegated but at least we have the Camborne derby next year (wonder if that will become the Cornish Super Cup game??). Ampthill Stadium Capacity

Hi Jowaninpensans - not a southwest club but Ampthill's ground of Dillingham Park has recently been stated as having a 10,000 capacity. I am not that knowledgeable of the club but imagine the capacity is more like 1,000-2,000 tops unless recent building work has been done. Any thoughts? Jgjsmith006 (talk) 21:37, 20 May 2016 (UTC)

The capacity was added on 6 October 2015 by User talk:Elisralevic who is now banned. Cornwall playing tomorrow and I have to work. Jowaninpensans (talk) 21:41, 20 May 2016 (UTC)

Tregenna: No refs on dab pages

Just so you know, the guideline for disambiguation pages prescribes that references should not be presented on these pages; I've commented it out. If you want to start an article on the SS Tregenna that launched in 1880, the reference would be appropriate there. —swpbT 14:05, 9 June 2016 (UTC)

Jowaninpensans, Hi - exciting news regarding the Super Cup in today's Independent - it seems that Launceston will still get to play Redruth after all. I have updated page but you may have some information I am lacking so please add or correct if you do. Otherwise a pretty slow summer rugby wise - should be some friendlies in the next few weeks but the Blacks aren't making any signings as of yet - will wait and see! Cheers. (Jgjsmith006) 16:00, 7 August 2016 (UTC)

Only just read last weeks Independent. Would like to get to some of them but I think I'm away when the first match is on. There are changes to Cornwall 1 and 2 according to the Independent as well. Jowaninpensans (talk) 18:29, 14 August 2016 (UTC)

Hi there. I've started a new initiative, the Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. It's a long term goal to bring about 10,000 article improvements to the UK and Ireland. Through two contests involving just six or seven weeks of editing so far we've produced over 1500 improvements. Long term if we have more people chipping it and adding articles they've edited independently as well from all areas of the UK then reaching that target is all possible. I think it would be an amazing achievement to see 10,000 article improvements by editors chipping in. If you support this and think you might want to contribute towards this long term please sign up in the Contributors section. No obligations, just post work on anything you feel like whenever you want, though try to avoid basic stubs if possible as we're trying to reduce the overall stub count and improve general comprehension and quality. Thanks.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:42, 30 August 2016 (UTC)

RFU Championship

Hi Jowaninpensans - good to be back at rugby (even if Lanson lost against 14 players). Was wondering if you knew the attendance for the Nottingham v London Scottish game on 4/9/16? No information on BBC, Sky, club websites or Nottingham newspapers, and Statbunker does not seem to be updated this season as no Championship information. Have emailed Nottingham Rugby but no reply yet. Hope you can help. Cheers. (Jgjsmith006) 11:13, 5 September 2016 (UTC)

Can't see the attendance anywhere. Hope to watch Lancen when they play Camborne (providing I am not working). Jowaninpensans (talk) 16:35, 5 September 2016 (UTC)
Spoke to someone at Nottingham Rugby and they said it they thought it was around 900. I will call again tomorrow to get the official figure. I should get up to Camborne for October 1st - I think they will probably batter us but I have never been to the Recreation Ground so it will be an interesting visit whatever the result. Good win for Pirates at Bedford - they should have a better season than last. Cheers. (Jgjsmith006) 19:59, 5 September 2016 (UTC)
924 was the official attendance. Ridiculous that it is so hard to find. Then again, the Championship doesn't really have it's own website - I think Wikipedia is the website! (Jgjsmith006) 09:11, 6 September 2016 (UTC)

National League Salary Cap

Hi - have you heard the latest idiocy from the RFU??? They are proposing a salary cap for clubs of tier 3 and below of 150k (National 1), 100k (National 2), 50k (National 3) and 0 for anything below. It seems like an attempt to ring fence the top two flights and turn everything below into an amateur sport. Imagine if Pirates were in National 1 but unable to get into the Championship, despite a new stadium, because the RFU would not let them spend the money they need to get promoted and stay in the second tier. It is ridiculous that ambitious clubs like Coventry or Darlington Mowden Park be denied a crack at the Championship because of the nutty RFU who are happy to give themselves a pay rise and for the Premiership to get richer and richer while everyone else literally gets peanuts. I have written to RFU, Rugby Paper and my own club to make feelings clear and would recommend that all other supporters and clubs do the same to stop them destroying rugby. Destubathon

Hi. thanks for your contributions towards the challenge. I'm running Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon from October 15 to November 27 which needs contributors. Before it starts contestants will be asked if they want articles done for it to also count towards the 10,000 challenge, and it's also a chance to win some prizes for contributing towards the whole range of countries, including Madagascar, so sign up at the destubathon if interested! Even if not interested in prizes, there will be the focus on destubbing anyway and hopefully people can still be a part of it.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:25, 8 October 2016 (UTC)

Hopefully we'll do another British contest early next year!♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:34, 8 October 2016 (UTC)

Africa Destubathon

Hi, thanks for your work so far! Can you do me a favour though and always add every entry you do to the main list here as well as the entries page, regardless if yet approved or not as that's the master list of all articles being done. It's just very time consuming for me to be judging the articles, trying to contribute myself and chasing up what people have done and filling it out for people each time. So if you can take care of that this would be a great help, there's some part filled out ones underneath so you just need to add country, article name and then your username. Thanks.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:33, 16 October 2016 (UTC)

Will do. Jowaninpensans (talk) 20:40, 16 October 2016 (UTC)

British & Irish Cup 2016

Hi Jowaninpensans - had a quiet weekend as Launceston had the week off - managed to get over to the Super Cup game against Camborne a few weeks ago in which we were outclassed by a team that are sure to be in title running (I think they will go up and play Redruth next season). With regards to B&I Cup do you have any info on Connacht Eagles v Pirates as I cannot find attendance anywhere (nor for the Nottingham game but this is more likely to emerge later in the week)? On another note Statbunker have been having issues with RFU realizing data & the once decent Sky coverage is now very minimal for all divisions. All this missing information is really buggering up our end of season statistics! (Jgjsmith006) 18:36, 17 October 2016 (UTC)

Haven't managed to look for anything at the moment I'm afraid. Bit busy with family and other things. Jowaninpensans (talk) 16:36, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
Found out by emailing contacts at clubs - 791 at Nottingham and 200 at Connacht. Hope to see you back on soon - Cornish rugby needs you! (Jgjsmith006) 18:48, 21 October 2016 (UTC)

Andohahela National Park establishment year

Hi, in recently destubbed Andohahela National Park, infobox says it was established in 1997, whereas the article has a category as "Protected areas established in 1998". Besides, you've added a new category as "1968 establishments in Madagascar". IMHO, there is one or two inconsistencies there. Cheers! Hanberke (talk) 04:48, 30 October 2016 (UTC)

I added references, corrected bare reference, and added additonal text to take it above the 1500 bytes mark. The only year I can see referenced for the establishment of the reserve is 1998. Will do the corrections and I need to stop working late at night after a long day.Jowaninpensans (talk) 08:32, 30 October 2016 (UTC)

London Welsh v Nottingham

Hi Jowaninpensans - I believe this game finished 26-20 to London Welsh with Nottingham getting 2 bonus points, although both the BBC and NCA websites have got this wrong putting 26-16 instead! I have changed this on the results section but not sure if you have updated league table to reflect this? Cheers. (Jgjsmith006) 10:36, 4 December 2016 (UTC)

Nottingham have two more points on the RFU website than in the RugbyPaper so it looks like they should be in fourth place as per the wikipage. Media was slow with the results yesterday. They got Coventry wrong as well. Jowaninpensans (talk) 10:47, 4 December 2016 (UTC)
Media have been terrible this season - the BBC and Sky can't even be bothered to produce attendances like they used to (I emailed the BBC and got some guff about how they didn't have enough time to cover it even though they include all the players and the referee in their reports). Statbunker has also been behind as RFU are taking ages to release results. Good luck with Pirates. (Jgjsmith006) 11:35, 4 December 2016 (UTC)

Hi - I have completed a page for Kieron Lewitt who played for CAB up until 2015 (how we miss his kicking). I have only been at the club for 3 seasons so knowledge is limited largely to my first season watching (including his injury) so would appreciate if you have any further information such as if he actually played for Bridgwater & Albion or had any Pirates appearances (he may have played B&I Cup at one point) etc. Thanks. (Jgjsmith006) 11:23, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

[2] [3] mentions him. The info I have stops at seaon 2008–09 I'm afraid. I regret not doing season articles for the Pirates. Jowaninpensans (talk) 20:58, 6 December 2016 (UTC)
Thanks - I think that was the only game he played for Pirates. (Jgjsmith006) 16:55, 10 December 2016 (UTC)

Hi, please carefully read the instructions at the bottom of Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon for collecting your prize. I will need you to send me an email, your wiki name, what I owe you and your preference for currency in dollars or pounds/country of residence.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:42, 13 December 2016 (UTC)

I hope that you had a good Christmas. I have created a page for Nat Saumi, which as a Pirates fan should be of interest. I have managed to get quite a lot of information in but am missing his early days at Penzance & Newlyn (pre-2000) and Redruth. If you have any more information it would be appreciated. No Redruth game on 31st so no home games at Launceston till end of January. Enjoy the New Year! (Jgjsmith006) 16:40, 28 December 2016 (UTC)

Brings back memories of Nat, Victor Olongo, Richard Newton, etc. Will have to have a look at the book when I've finished with Pseudocoremia suavis. Lets hope Lanscen put a few results together and stay up. Jowaninpensans (talk) 20:24, 28 December 2016 (UTC)
